podborski says on Sep 25, 2007, 16:39: I did exactly that. And I didn't speak a word of spanish either. Just before the plane landed I thought I must be crazy, but it was too late to turn back.

Buongone says on Sep 25, 2007, 18:41: I third that one. Met a real nice Colombiana also! Plan on getting married as soon as a few matters are worked out. Only problem I had in Cali, was the cab drivers at Chipichapa, could not understand I wanted to go to Hoteles Intercontinental. They referred to it as Hoteles Inter.

Robert Jorge says on Sep 25, 2007, 18:49: Add me to this list also. I did it a year and a half ago. It was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I actually moved there 2 months later and lived there for several months. Still working on the Spanish, back here in the States. I see us making a semi-permanent move back to Colombia in a year or two. "You can not take the barrio out of the girl you really can't." Oneforamillion 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Dan says on Sep 25, 2007, 23:00: I went due to work and I didn't know any spanish. Now, I've been there many times, and I can speak decent spanish and get around pretty good. I love it and I plan on moving to Colombia someday. All I need to do is wait another 10yrs for retirement. Then, my bags will be packed and I'm there... now I just need to look for a place to buy for when the time comes. God Bless America! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Man Tequila says on Sep 26, 2007, 17:10: I went to Cartagena knowing travellers´Spanish and no Colombians. I could say the same for many other countries in Central and South America too. This is not a reason not to go, but if you do not speak basic Spanish, stick to Cartagena, Cuzco, Mexico or Buenos Aires. If you don't like him, ignore him. If you have a lot of questions for him, send him a private message. But don't fill up PBH with dozens of one-sentence posts that are mostly commentary about the posters, not the topic at hand. dwmte7 says on Sep 29, 2007, 05:15: tequila man...i don't agree, necessarily, with just go to cartagena if you don't have spanish down pat. i lived a bit in cartagena over the years and in final analysis, i find it more of a dump than a cultural refuge. i was the perfect example of not knowing spanish and i had to establish workshops for the production of furniture back in the late '80's. within months, i had 12 workshops and about 60 employees...and i damn sure didn't speak spanish. in fact, in those days, with the exception of the occassional dope-fly-boy, there were no other foreigners in medelin. i was verymuch on my own...and i might add, because of the era, bloody scared on many occassion. there was shooting, bombing and killing 24/7. but the overwhelming romance of the place kept me going and i lived through it. if you don't speak spanish...DON'T hang out with foreigners. just jump in get your feet wet and before you know it you'll be functional. maybe not perfect, that takes a long time, especially if your not interested in classes (like myself). and you'll also discover that the colombians for the most part will respect you for your attemts, rather than dress you down for your mistakes. just go, discover and enjoy. patriarch 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
