How many Medellin-related websites are there?

Slightly odd question... by related I mean... any kind of business or organisation...

Hotels,
Hostels,
Forums,
Newspapers,
Government,
Anything...

Is the number more than 1,000? More than 5,000? How could I find this out?

It's difficult to determine how many websites there is dealing with Medellin. Many sites do not even use the keyword "medellin." I don't think there is any easy way of finding this out. If you did a keyword search for medellin you come up with 15 million hits. This is in Yahoo and remember many of these are duplicate entries. Good luck finding the information you want.

I guess 95% of what i'm talking about is business. So, how many businesses in Medellin have their own website?

A quick flick through the yellow pages suggests maybe 1 in 5... but that would still mean there must be more than 5,000.

Lostgringo says on Mar 10, 2008, 09:26:

I think that 1 in 5 would be high. The internet in Colombia in terms of businesses having their own website has not taken off like it has in North America. I remember speaking to a Plastic Surgeon one time and he said he doesn't even advertise in the phone book because he is worried about extortion issues. I mean my girlfriend rents out an apartment she owns and she does not put the exact address on her website. So in my opinion websites representing businesses in Colombia generally speaking would be around 5% especially if it is a small enterprise. Certain niches are well represented like Hotels, hostels and so on but as a whole the idea of having one's business "out there" on the internet has not taken off like it has in North America.

In my opinion, websites representing business as a advertising venue are in their infancy stage in Colombia. There is lots of room to grow in this area if you are a web developer/designer and so on. The key may be in convincing Colombian businesses that they need a website to promote their company. That would be the difficult part of this equation.

Mileage may vary.

I totally agree. I spent a while creating a website for my company and now I realise nobody looks at it. Weird, considering Colombians seem to love things like Facebook.

So, 5%. Hmm. I wonder how many registered companies there are in Medellin.

Yeah the black sheep is quite famous.

As for the 'find a latin wife' websites... aren't colombians embarressed by that? I don't understand why it doesnt build up resentment.

Medellin Traveler says on Mar 10, 2008, 15:46:

Why would it build up resentment?

I had the opportunity to tag along with a few friends to check out one of those dating agencies. I took it upon myself to ask a million questions about the operation when the couple were being introduced in the other room. I have to admit, that I walked away very impressed by how professional they operated the agency. It's gringo owned, but Paisa operated.

The gentleman who was there to meet a single Colombian women was looking for someone in his age range, not some young hottie, but someone to share his life with. I had the opportunity to meet the lovely lady, and was invited to dinner with them, and it seemed like it was working out for both parties. You should have seen them together. It was not, just another prepago hook up, but two single people looking for someone to share their lifes with.......

It is also difficult for single Colombian women to find a good man who is interested in someone over 30 for more than just sexo.

I was talking to a cab driver and he said he did not understand why American men travel to Colombia to be with ugly women. He said, "look at me. I'm ugly. I have a beautiful wife, and a young girlfriend as well. I wouldn't touch the dogs that I see many American men with."

So, I can completely understand why Colombian women would sign up at one of these agencies. And, I completely understand why an American man would venture to another country for a wife; good, bad, or otherwise.

I also don't think Colombian men would waste any time or energy being resentful of American men for wanting to meet single Colombian women.

Med Traveller..exactly..what we see here is an American who has a niche and sells that to North Americans etc. Guys from North America are "internet savvy" and take advantage of websites promoting what ever. I am in 100% agreement with hooking up lonely men from North America with beautiful women from Colombia the way you have described. It's a win win situation for all parties. I would like to do that myself. Want to partner up?

But in terms of Colombians getting on board with their own websites it's like trying to sell a refridgerator to an Eskimo. I mean from what I have experienced Colombians do not go to the internet to find things or sources of information like North Americans. For example, if I want to find a good price on air fair I go on the internet 1st thing. Colombians would just go to a travel agency. How many travel agencies have you ever seen on the internet that were done in English or Spanish and located in Colombia? There's a good niche for someone. Anyone want to partner up with one.

I agree that Colombian woman are considered old very quickly.... but you won't find rich Colombian woman at these agencies... come on... it's mostly down to enhancing their lifestyle... and it makes me sad that they have to give up their life and culture to do it. Anyway, there are bigger problems in the world...

WHAT are you talking about MT?..This statement does not make sense to me...

MT says "He said, "look at me. I'm ugly. I have a beautiful wife, and a young girlfriend as well. I wouldn't touch the dogs that I see many American men with."

Either way, this guy sounds like a really credible source to quote -
ugly cab driver, wife and girlfriend....hmmmm

BTW did you speak with the garbage man while you were interviewing credible sources...come on!

CatGirl -

I was just sharing that story because it seems to me that the treatment of women over 30 in Colombia is considered too OLD for many men.

Again, he was just saying he doesn't understand why American men wanted to travel to Colombia to find an old maid to fall in love with when there are so many young sardinas available, that's all.

Interviewing credible sources?

Yes...the over 30 I have heard, also with Colombian men too....Not just women

MT - it just reads a bit like you are promoting his comment. Maybe not your intent? But that is how it came across - even after I read it a couple times.

As you followed this statement with
"So, I can completely understand why Colombian women would sign up at one of these agencies. And, I completely understand why an American man would venture to another country for a wife; good, bad, or otherwise"

I think there is a difference in how certain cultures view what "old" is....seems like the US has bumped it up a few more decades than some other cultures. Again, I have heard that men over 30 in Colombia are considered "old" too. I was suprised to hear that....hey maybe I was misinformed....either way - using that cab driver's comment ... tacky, sorry. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it., jajaja

I hear what you're saying. The story was more of an example as to what women over 30 have to deal with. And I hardly doubt men over 30 have any problems meeting younger women, even sardinas.

I remember growing up 50 was OLD AS DIRT here in the states, but not anymore.

So, older women in Colombia have a big problem, rich or poor. A business idea springs to mind.

Do women pay for sex in Colombia, if so, how much?

Juanes says on Mar 11, 2008, 08:47:

welll i wouldnt consider any older 30 women in colombia, especially medellin, unapppealing or unattractive...they are so much better than the girls of that age her in the UK and look after themselves better too...

the thing i find sad is colombia does not want to get a reputattion like thailand for sex toursim i think when it is gradually turning the corner as a great country to visit for people from europe, despite what the uk govt say on their website it is in the top 5 long haul places to go on vacation as rated by ABTA (association of brisith travel agents)....i dont think these tours or websites help thats all cos its quite easy to meet thirty somethings over there in the normal going out process even with not so good grasp of spanish.

found ur comments funny though catgirl. especially the taxi driver........its like even in london all the latinos are ok but i reckon brasil and colombia keep the best ones or they are happy not to leave their great country so therefore we get all the average colombians here looks wise
