How does it work computer nerds?

OK I click on the post at PBH for eyeglasses.....at the top pop up ads for "vision works" Lasik and other ads. If I click on one of them Peter gets a dollar and or a dime?

OK But how does this work? If the post deals with "charity", World Vision ads are at the top. Visas for your Colombian gal and ads for "Colombian Cupid".

Any details on this...?

Google ads tries to match ads to the other content on a page. Sometimes their matches make sense, sometimes not so much.

When you buy "ad words", you make a bid as to how much you are willing to pay for a click. So when a word match shows up for the ad words you bid on, Google's system finds the matched ads that have bid the highest.

So say if you bid $5 a click for the word "eyeglasses", when a page with Google ads matches "eyglasses", your bid gets compared to those of others who bid on that term. Say one guy bid $7, another one bid $6, another one $3 and another bid $1. The ads would be displayed in the descending order of the bid so the guy that bid $7 gets displayed at the top and yours in the middle. If someone clicks on the top ad, that guy pays Google $7. If someone clicks on yours, you pay $5.

That is a simplified explanation, but is the gist of how it works. Google ad clicks can get very expensive. That's why they make so much money.

We have tried Google ads for one of my side companies, but found that it wasn't cost effective for that particular B2B service. We were paying $5 a click on average and were getting nowhere near the top. We found that other forms of advertising worked better for us. On the other hand, my brother has some travel sites in Europe and it works very well for him. The click costs for the Euro versions of Google are considerably lower.

The cost per ads can vary wildly. Some terms can cost just a few cents, while others can cost $20 or more a click. Whether it's worth it depends on your conversion rate and the resulting ad cost per conversion.

I am not sure how big a cut the hosting site gets.

Google Adsense.

Depends on the product. Depends on the ad campaign and product.

You can request that the ads be targeted for certain websites, like PBH. Not sure if "Colombian Cupid" does that.

You just sign up for a Google AdWords account and pay for the clicks and/or impressions (if you mean advertising your business... otherwise sign up for Adsense if you want to sell advertising space).
