How do you call your honey?

I am in love with a Colombiano. We use English to communicate. However, it is the second language for both of us. I found the words and phrases I use are rather boring as I used to learn formal English only. I hope to learn more sweetening phrases, either in English or Spanish. First of all, can anybody tell me how do you call your loving one?

"Papi" or "Papito" is popluar...but Some Colombian women hate those words. They are the same, but one is more endearing than the other. In any event, they look at the words as kind of terms that are used by lower class people. I am not saying I agree with it, I'm just saying I think it is more commonly used by the people that are members of the middle to lower echelons of society.

UC believe or not I don’t, I think because in my family my mom was the boss and the strong one, although she and my dad have the same career, she had the best jobs and salaries, so we grew up in very powerful “matrialcal” home, My Dad used to call her and us by those little silly names, but she never did that to him, don’t get me wrong even if she doesn’t said I love you to us often or him, her actions express how much she loves us, that she doesn’t need to say it, but she always taugh us (the girls) to be strong and not to take any s***t from a man, but the funny thing is that my two sister and I are just like my mum, and the boy (THERE WERE TWO ONE DIE 11 YEARS AGO) of the family is like my dad, he calls his wife by those names and spoils her with funny names. If you know what I mean . So in some way we, the girls grew up to have this kind of armour, if we said all those names is like a sign of weakness, we are loving but in another ways. I still hold his hands when we out and little things like that .I do call my kids by those names like sometimes I call my 15 year old, nene, he hates it but I can’t help, in that sense I am following my Dad, that what he used to do with us AND still does!!!. it's so embarrasing now I know how my children feel.:-(.
My husband doesn’t mind at all if I don't call him papito. puchis whatever...

Greenday. I don’t want to be a rich woman, I’m already are ;-)

BTW I don't want to say how my dad calls me, is so embarrasing, my husband laugh and sometimes he calls me by that, I hate it, but at the same time i feel at home.:-)

All I can say is, I think you are very unusual. It's hard to say which is nicer, to never hear your name (always to be called "mi amor") or to hear it all the time and never the other. I guess when all is said and done it comes down to how often is the guy getting El Chiquito.

I'm was almost in big TROUBLE! = ) I read the post from Marcastillo (from 9/22) about cute pet names for her husband... and personally learned a valuable lesson! As I am new to learning Espanol (but agressively TRYING to learn) I thought I would test out a cute name for my Colombiana! My mistake was picking GORDITA and not looking it up first. I had a long conversation yesterday and ended with, "Tranquillo mi gordita!" The next 4 seconds of silence seemed like an eternity and then I only heard laughter from my bebe! Can you imaging saying that comment (talk to you later my fatty) to somebody with weight issues?!?!?Thank Goodness she is really slender and she thought I was joking/playing with her... I would have been in the proverbial dawg house - and nobody like that! = ) I guess I will do more research before I start throwing out words in Espnaol! = P

jajajja Cowboy is right! I feel SO WEIRD calling my man by his name. The only time we ever use each other's names is if there are a bunch of other people in the room. I guess so that there is no misunderstanding 'cause anyone can hear someone call "baby" and think it's for them. Other than that, I think I stopped calling him by his name a few months into the relationship. Sometimes I actually get annoyed if he uses my name in front of other people when he's addressing me 'cause I know it's fake and I don't like that, but it's usually if he's not completely comfortable in the environment he's in so I can forgive him.

I feel fake and silly calling my husband by those names, and I am glad he doesn't call me like that either. I don't mind he shortening my name but sometimes I tell him not to. Here in England they shorten every name, I don't like it. I want my son to be call Nicholas, but everybody started to call him Nick, I am the only one calling him by his proper name.
