How do we know the marriage visa is history?

I'm not trying to sound presumptuous, but, how do we actually know the marriage visa doesn't exist anymore?
Don't get me wrong, I really would like it to be history. It's just that I have nothing to base this on when I talk to other people. All I can say, is that I read it on an internet forum. Lord knows, I've looked at the embassy sites, and they all seem to say the marriage visa is still needed. In addition, some even talk of some announcement card that needs to be sent to the U.S. from Colombia.

This is an important issue to me because, as my novia is talking to the notaries in Colombia, they all seem to still think the marriage visa is still required. Is there some statute that I could point them to, or is there someone who can explain to them that there is no marriage visa anymore? I feel like I'm watching one of those old movies, where a group of people secluded on an island still think WWII is going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.... This would be too funny if they weren't so serious.

Thanks,
Aaron

Do a search on this site for marriage visa and you will find threads that spefically mention the statute which eliminated the need for a marriage visa. Some of the notarias haven't learned this yet but you can shop for one that knows the current law. Check out the bottom of Gary Bala's page: http://www.usaimmigrationattorney.com/colombiamarriage.html

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

Decrees... No.2668/88 and 1556/89 were repealed in February. Just to be sure check and be sure your US Passport is still valid for six months.

From the U S Embassy Bogotá Home Page;

Colombian Civil Law Requirements

The following documentary requirements must be completed to satisfy the civil law regarding marriage in Colombia. Civil marriage is a contract which takes effect upon issuance of the deed of marriage (escritura pública de matrimonio civil), which is issued by a notary public. In order to process the deed of marriage the foreigner has to identify himself with his passport or a Colombian foreigner identification card. It is no longer necessary to have a marriage visa to marry in Colombia."

Colombian marriage visa. If you want it from the source you can call the Miami Consulate at: 1-305-448-5558. (friendly people) It was eliminated Feb. 1st.

Your girlfriend is corrct however, many notarias are not aware of the change. It takes a while for things to trickle down the chain here.

Best Wishes,
Bob
