How do poorbuthappy guides work?

I started a new feature: the poorbuthappy guides. You can see the first one at the left hand side: Preparing your trip to Colombia.

The poorbuthappy guides are just pages that group together some of the best discussions we've had around a certain topic. The topic can be anything Colombia related: visas, adoption, medellin, places to stay, food, ...

The guides can be written by anyone. If you want to write a guide, just use the search engine to search the archives for good links related to your topic. Use simple html to create lists and links. I'll help you out if needed. Then let me know you've created a guide, and I will add it to the list.

Only fairly complete guides will be added - a few links doesn't cut it. Yes, you'll be spending hours going through the archives, but it's a service to humanity ;)

Guide #2 A collaborative effort by CaliPro, Desi and Nato to read and index all the old threads that have anything to do with "chasing chicas"

On the plus side, it might reduce the number of new threads that run to 100 plus messages on the same theme.

On the negative side, it would probably start WWIII.

Yes! Finally! This is what the site needed for a long time.

I am willing to work on indexing all the travel related stuff. Well, not all of it of course since there's way too much of it. But I would go city by city or departamento by departamento.

Who's with me?

I'll start with Leticia and Amazonas for now.

Bogata weather and smog?

I鈥檓 interested in re-locating to Colombia. I currently live in Panama near the Costa Rican border in a very small town. My Spanish is far from perfect, but I do communicate in Spanish. I will be making a trip to Colombia very soon and would appreciate any information relating to my questions.

I have read conflicting stories concerning the smog and climate of Botaga. I鈥檓 looking for a cool climate. I enjoy walking in the morning so clean air is important to me. I鈥檓 not looking for a 鈥渟mog free鈥? environment, but I would like to walk without choking.

My questions are:

1. Can one find a safe place to live near Bogata without the problems of excessive smog?

2. How would you compare the climate of Bogata to that of Cartagena? I鈥檓 assuming Cartagena would be 鈥渉ot and humid鈥? like Panama City? However many seem to enjoy the Cartagena area.

3. What other areas of Colombia would be recommended considering safety, weather and smog?

4. A good internet connection is a must. I been living with a 16K dialup connection.

Sponsoring Conjugal Partner from Canada Hi Everyone,

Hope someone can offer some advice as to how to go about receiving a visa for a Conjugal partner from Colombia.

My boyfriend (Colombian) and I (Canadian) have been together (or apart actually) for 2 years.

Of the course of the two years, he applied twice for student visas and was declined. After having been together for a year, we decided to try the conjugal route. It's very specific in the Canadian Immigration guide that this is only for special cases where people are unable to marry or live together continuously to form a common law relationship due to immigration barriers. Having student visas declined is the main reason we were not able to live common law.

The waiting time on the application actually wasn't that long. We submitted our application to Mississauga in December of 2004 and received an Interview at the end of March 2005.

However, he was told at the interview that the conjugal class is only for same sex couples that cannot get married because their country does not allow, COMBINED with immigration barriers...which we feel is very descriminatory. If they woudln't give him student permits, how would it have been possible for us to take part in a common law relationship?

We have been told that our application will be declined in 3 months if we do not submit change in marital status. We feel this is being forced on us.

Any thoughts from anyone out there how to beat this without getting married? Does anyone know anyone who has successfully recieved a visa by applying as a conjugal partner?

Your thoughts and feed back are greatly appreciated.

Are there other things to do in Medellin besides going to the nightclubs and the party scene? I am planning my first trip to Colombia in September for two weeks and I'm not a drinker or partier. I like outdoor things and would like to explore the countryside and surrounding pueblos and of course the Cafetera.
Is there someone on this site that can show me the do's and don'ts while I'm there?

Fire-fighting Jobs in Bogota Hola! I just wanted to find out from anyone how long it would take for an English speaking person to find a Fire-fighting job in Bogota? A friend of mine has just been engaged to a beautiful Colombian lady and wants to go and settle (Colombia) where his other half is but does not speak any spanish. He is a qualified Fire-fighter and would be happy to continue working as one when he finally gets to settle in Bogota. Any ideas?

Thanks

FIRE FIGHTING IN COLOMBIA... COMPARE TO US... LET ME TELL YOU THAT THE FIRE FIGHTERS IN COLOMBIA ARE DIFFERENT FROM THE ONES IN THE US. (ASSUMING YOUR FRIEND IS AMERICAN), IN THE US THEY HAVE SIMILAR RESPONSABILITIES AS THE POLICE, BUT IN COLOMBIA YOU ONLY NEED FIRE FIGHTERS WHEN THERE ARE ACTUAL FIRES!!! AND THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN THAT OFTEN! BELIEVE ME! (SPEAKING OF BOGOTA!)
THEIR SALARIES ARE NOT GOOD! SO I THINK YOUR FRIEND IS GOING TO BE A LITTLE BIT SHOCKED!!!
THAT IS JUST MY OPINION, I THINK HE SHOULD GET A JOB IN THE RED CROSS OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT...
GOOD LUCK TO YOUR FRIEND.

GOOD LUCK YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE FUN!!
ALSO I AM NOT SURE IF JULY IS THE DRY OR WET SEASON! THIS IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE THE AMAZON RIVER DRIES UP AND YOU CAN'T NAVEGATE TO CERTAIN AREAS..

Airport or Puente Aereo Dear Cor,
Before setting the place of the meeting be sure if you are going to leave to Cali from the Airport or from el Puente Aereo (Only Avianca uses this terminal).
In both places there is Juan Valdez and you can have a coffee there. In the airport is in the second floor and you can ask anyone where is it. Just meat your party in front of this place.
Have a nice visit to Colombia.

New Member I am resident in Central America since late 1985, mainly in Guatemala and El Salvador, where I now reside as a pensionado. Since I have been there, including Colombia, and done that, I should be interested in starting up a poorbuthappy forum for Central America. Like Colombia, El Salvador and Guatemala can be very dangerous places for those not using common sense, and like colombia, many natives never often travel far outside their own area and consider the country to be very dangerous, and like Colombia, especially in El Salvador, where we have few tourists and travellers, visitors are rarely preyed upon, with the exception of those who think that city streets tranquil by day are safe after midnight and why spend 3 dollars to take a taxi nine blocks to the hotel anyway? etc. Per capita in Central America, Costa Rica has the most crime against tourists, one reason is the publicity, the country is billed as an almost totally crime free paradise, and thefts of credit cards, money, passports, valuables, even entire vehicles full of luggages are endemic. Violent crime is pretty much limited to the immigrant..Nicaraguan and South American guest workers..legal and illegal..barrios of San Jos茅, all Central American capitals now have a problem with pandillas or street gangs, many of whom have been deported from the USA. Outside the major cities Central America is generally peaceful with a lot of eco and cultural tourism.

Greatly appreciate any help or advice that is offered.
