How do I convince my son?

My son, who is 24, is having a difficult time believing me that Colombia would be a nice place to visit for a few weeks or so. He is an ex-Marine and has spent time in Japan but I tell him that he needs to come to Colombia. I have refrained from telling him about this country as I don't want to glorify someplace that may not be suitable for him, but I do want him to at least give Colombia a try. I know my son. I know he would love Colombia. But, I'm dad. What the hell do I know? So, what would you say?

Well I am between you and your son's age. Just my opinion, maybe playing a little reverse psychology would be the most effective way to get your son to travel with you to Colombia. Here is the way I would try to manipulate him.

You talking to your son. "Ya, I guess it wasn't a good idea to ask if you wanted to go to Colombia. You probably wouldn't like it." Then, casually mention in later conversations things like, "Maybe it is a good thing you didn't want to go. I would have to be worried about the local girls constantly making passes at you." Or say something like, "You would be bored down there. There isn't much to do outside of all the typical tourism things like museums, hiking, horse riding, stuff like that. The only other thing people do down there when they aren't working is party. And I know you wouldn't be into clubbing or going to festivals."

Anyway, just some ideas. Good luck. I am going through a reverse situation as yours. I can't get my parents to go to Colombia.

You are not alone. Try convincing four children that it is time Mom & Dad just closed down life in North America and returned to where they met.......................

Good luck. Since he is a Marine (no such thing as an "ex" Marine) present it to him as tour of duty - a recon mission in search of a possibly more rewarding life.

But what do I know? The best I have been able to do is get two of the children to agree to meet us on San Andres Island for a few weeks in December. Hopefully they will become more interested after that. We tried to get them to the north coast but .......................

Why work so hard at convincing adult children to listen to parent's advice? If they aren't smart enough to listen, it's their loss, no?

Tell him why you like the country, then let him decide for himself if he wants to go there.

Photos. Send him some landscapes, and some of the girls. They should pique his interest.

If you lined up someone that would take him out and party, show him the town, someone his age, that might help. Tell him you've already fixed it up with X and the invitation is open whenever he wants to come down. Then tell him when the best time of year is to visit (festivals etc).

Now, Dad, just because you're getting more chucha than you even dreamed possible that doesn't mean your son needs to go to Colombia too. He's young and he's got game so he doesn't need to mess with chicks milking him for dough. He can still get the gringas to give him some backdoor action. When he's old and decrepit like you and can't remember which day of the week it is, then it will be time for him to give Colombia a try.

Wow, you're a cool dad...my dad tries to convince me NOT to go to Colombia. Have I listened to him? NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! VIVA COLOMBIA!!!!!

One more here for the club "my kids don't want to visit Colombia". My grown kids absolutely refuse to go to the country of their birth not even for a short visit. They say it's boring, dangerous, too expesive, too far and that they've been there already too many times whe they were younger and I dragged them there.

Once I have established a household there and start spending several months of the year there I'm sure they'll eventually show up.

Chris, tell your son that punani like in Colombia you won't find anywhere else. I lived in New York almost all my life and you can't find women like the ones here. I was also in the Corps for 4 years with 2nd BN 5th Marines and lived down in SoCal and not even there you can find punani like here in Medallo. Women in the U.S. are lame compared to women here in Colombia, by the way I am also 24 so it's not like an old guy is telling you this. QUE VIVA COLOMBIA HP!

Desi...i used to hate going to colombia when i was a little kid too..the last time i went was when i was 12 abosulutly hated it..but then i went when i was 24,,had more freedom could do what i wanted,,and absolulty feel in love with the country not to mention the ladies are unbeleivable...i would suggest telling him that girls will be all over his nuts...and that they are some of the most beautiful in the country

All right, I'll ask: How come it took three seconds to euthanize Eight Belles, but the Womens NBA is starting Year 12???

I've tried that one...he says he prefers redheads...:) He is also under this false impression that many Colombian girls are superficial, plastic, vain ad frivolous...wonder where did he get that idea?(He was totally charmed by Kat, though, but then again, who isn't :)) My daughter is interested, but says that she wants to go to other places where she hasn't been before first and they are pretty tied up now with a baby and the house, work, study etc.

I'm totally convinced that if I get my son to go over there he would absolutely love it and the chances are that he might even become a true patriot and not want to come back. I'd hate to put all that distance between our family members, we're a small family and have always been close.

Lol desi and i was charmed by him, he is a good looking guy.

my kids still enjoy going to Colombia so hope this doesn't change, i got a bit worry about my son few years back , because my family was telling him not to go there or do that because it was dangerous and blah blah so he felt a bit trap without freedom, he said once he didn't want to go back because of that, so i had to tell my family to lay off a bit. now he is very happy going there, so much that he is going to live there for 6 month in his gap year.

my daughter well she change every year.. this year she wants to be in the UK

I have a Colombian friend who's son stopped going to Colombia because her family there were protecting him so much that he felt like my son trap, he got scared and paranoid, so he decided it was not worth the hassle.

Desideria (Moderator) says on Oct 2, 2007, 13:09:

LOL kat, I'll tell him just that! That might do it!

I think they stopped wanting to go to Colombia because they would always stay at grandparents' and now that they are gone and the family is split with their uncles all hating each others and everybody fighting like cats and dogs over the few pesos that was the inheritance.

I've been trying to show him pictures of lovely caleñas but he refuses to open my e-mails with jpeg. files. ;(( He´'s told me to back off.!!!

Chrispej, I'm not sure where you all are coming from... But, at 24, he might be more interested in the adventurous safe side of Colombia.... It also depends on where you are planning to go in Colombia... If you set-up a few side trips of things that he may like to do, you may peek his interest.... Rafting on the Rio Fonce... Driving in Bogota (always an adventure).... Sunbathing in Santa Martha.... It all depends on his interests, Colombia has a lot to offer younger people now, more then in the past.... Clubs stay open until about 3:30am.... all types of clubs....

Desi, I remember on one of my trips as a kid, I barely left my grandmother's house!!! That was such a downer... But, we always made sure to go somewhere during my stay... I don't know if they still have it in Cali, but I think it's called El Parque de Caña.... It's the big waterpark in Cali... And of course since we're in Pereira, always went to the Termales....

Desideria (Moderator) says on Oct 2, 2007, 22:11:

You don't need to be adopted to go to Colombia with kat, slguy ;) (I can only think how jealous elmo, belucciguy and about two dozen other guys are feeling right now ....I've gotta tell my son. He's in his late twenties, btw, not a child any longer:))

OH, slguy, I just saw a pic that might've interested you, since you'd like yo be adopted bt a Swedish couple, but it's not on the net. Two totally gorgeous Swedish blondes have gotten married, Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Lundgren. Both wore the traditional white bridal attire with veil and flowers, married in the church, all tradition.- That's the kind of adoptive parents you were thinking about?
Cheers,
Desi

Well that is the difference between South America and North America. The children in North America have little respect for the old!!!!

I bet you will not be able to cange his mind. Talk to his friends indirectly. Children respect friend more than parents. Maybe the word is not respect but listen too....
