I'm not pretty sure, but maybe you could try using the "paginasamarillas" and try to contact some english institutes there

I have to agree with Manuel. I have been wanting the put a hated "need info about teaching in Colombia" post for some time, but have found that people are always told to look through the posts.

I spent hours upon hours going through every post on this site... while there is some information, it is farm from being very helpful. Most posts are ignored, some are told to look through the posts, and a few have been given good information. Shaz and Peter have put some very good info (and others of course) but there is no good internet resource for a questions of this nature.

At some point I want to make a post about this, but I want to do every bit of research I can before I do it. I know that the more it looks like you've helped yourself, the more people are willing to help you.

Perhaps this could be a seperate forum on this site?

daver, you're right Daver, you're right. As an English teacher with a lot of experience and therefore with a knowledge of what to look for and what questions to ask, I can tell you there isn't much information on this site. I can only imagine what it's like for someone who is just looking to get into teaching for the first time and is truly casting about for answers. There are a few good posts, and I truly do appreciate the people who have taken the time to post them. But with all respect, everytime someone says, "Search the archive," you know they have no idea about teaching and have simply seen the question asked over and over again.

Although it probably won't help the original poster, I hope to go to Colombia soon and find a teaching position. I have a lot of experience in many different parts of the world, and so I have a basic idea of how to go about things and what to look for. As soon as I'm somewhat confident about how things generally work in the Colombian ESL world (ESL -- English as a Second Language), I hope to post an article here outlining some of the basics.

Teaching English I was in Cali/CTG back in June specifically to look into teaching English. I talked with Berltiz in CTG and another school in Cali(forgot which one). I've also talked with an american that was teaching english partime. Here's the info, take it for what it's worth.

The school in Cali said they paid $21k peso/hr and Berlitz was about $1.5-2.0 mil peso/month, that's about $500-600USD/mo. Also, Berlitz and other "name" places "prefer" you have a CELTA.

I talked with several people from Bogota and they said that Bogota it was "easy" to get a job, just be native speaker. Now I think it might be easy to GET a job, but you won't get a decent paying job (ie, $1500-2000 USD/mo). Of course if you have a MA in Education or other graduate degree, then it might be a different story, because you can get jobs a University easier.

I read alot about teaching english at eslcafe.com, and the info on Colombia is pretty scarced. Interestingly, Vietnam(3rd world country) has very good starting pay($1500USD/mo for at 20-25/hrs a week). I don't understand how pay in Colombia is lower than Vietnam!! My plan is get my CELTA this winter then goto a jobfair in the US(Univ of Iowa) in Feb 05. Where ESL schools around the world recruit teachers. Sevaral Colombian schools will be there, I read somewhere that if they hire you from a jobfair your pay is higher than if you walk-in off the street. I think overall, teaching English in Colombian you'll trully be "poorbuthappy".

BTW, how do you do a search on this forum? I couldn't find a search button.
