First of all I should introduce myself, my name is Dan, I'm a 26 year old guy from the UK, and work as a web developer. Nice to meet you all :)
In May I am leaving the UK for a while, and having spent quite a bit of time researching different destinations with a close eye on my budget, thirst for new experiences, and an interest in 20°c weather I'd like to begin my time in South America with six months in Colombia followed by 6 months in Buenos Aires.
Id love a bit of feedback from other users here regarding where to head to, It's between Cartagena, Medellin, Cali and Bogota and I need to find out a little about these cities in order to make a decision about where to head to.
I love house and techno music, and would like to be in a city where this is catered for, maybe a little international DJ action? Which city is best for electronic music?
It is essential that I have an 'as good as possible' internet connection available to me, in my hotel room or apartment 24/7 (I have the laptop) - ideally I'd like an apartment in a reasonably secure environment, but am open to the idea of a hotel if it fits this requirement, or even a room in a nice house. Which city has the best internet infrastructure, and would have accomodation within my budget of $400 to $800 a month.
Thank you for taking the time to read, if you can help with any of these questions please do reply!
Dan

santiBOG says on Feb 23, 2006, 04:19: I hope this helps... Broadband infrastructure is widely available in any of the cities you mentioned. I don't think that would be an issue. Your budget for accomodations is more than reasonable and you'll be able to find an apartment in a nice neighborhood for that money.

But it's not that bad, think springtime temperatures, and if you really want the heat you can find it in less than two hours by land. Plus you could take short trips to other cities like Medellin, Cartagena and Cali easily from Bogota. Very interesting house/techno scene in Bogota - Cha Cha, Gotica, Cinema, Theatron, In Vitro, Azul Cafe, to name a few well known clubs - and regular visits by world class DJs. I have a friend in the city who is an amateur DJ and knows the scene well, let me know if you eventually get around to going and I can give you his number. Bogota has a great vibe, I say go and enjoy it!

MedellinViking says on Feb 25, 2006, 14:33: This looks like another good spot for Med - Bog Classic Medellin has quite a bit to offer. By the time you are up to the $500/mo range in Apts you can be in a very nice tower with a view. You can get you broadband wirelessly like I do or coming in with the cable from EPS. There are 3 basic consumer velocities offered, all of which are agonizingly slow but the best that is redily available . You still pay a premium though. I think EPS offers 128kbs, 256Kbs and 384Kbs service. They are currently pushing a package of broadband, TV and VOIP. Cannot remember their prices offhand but I get a wireless broadband at 150Kbs for 111,000p/mo and they offer 200Kbs for about 132.000 p/mo w/taxes. Not great when you are used to paying $40/mo for 3-5 Mbs service. The club scene here, should really be experienced to be judged correctly. Techno/Trance is wildly popular. There is a club called Deja Vu, kinda like a large remodeled house that is packed on Sundays! Clubs are tucked in everywhere from Universal along the freeway which boast a las Vegas like city facade up the hill to las Palmas area where there are half a dozen more clubs to titilate your Techno/Trance/House music cravings. There are a few web pages with the clubs advertising their events/DJ's for the weekend. If you want more info just PM me and I'll try to send you out some links to check out. Live your fantasies because life is short and from all I've seen death is really, really long.... 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
