Hotels in Medellin

My g/f is flying out to Medellin for a week and I want to splash out on a good hotel for a couple of nights before we head out of the city. Looking for a smaller friendly place rather than one of the big chains and a pool and/or cool decor would be great. Anyone got any ideas as there seems to be a big gap between the 'budget' and 'international luxury' hotels that I have looked at...

wobt Check out the 'Park 10 Hotel' search it on google. they have a website. two-story rooms. all fine wooden floors. spiral staircase to the upstairs. push out windows behind the smoked sliding glass doors, behind the louvered wooden doors. three-color marble bathroom with gold/silver fixtures. another sitting area upstairs with that bathroom and kingbed. two tv's, up and down. half bath down. bar. giant oval wooden table downstairs with 7 chairs - in case you want to bring a party - two quality comfy chairs and sofa down. without whirlpool, $130 USD per night; $140, with whirlpool. Great restaurants downstairs, one al fresco in the courtyard. very serene and close within walking distance of parque lleras or llaneras, whatever... and many good restaurants there. off the beaten path. up on a hill. great service. quiet, but only moments away from everything.

In case you are wondering; I highly recommend it.

Not sure whether they had a pool, or not. The whirlpool will be enough to keep you and your lady entertained And, you won't have to be jumping up and down to get out of those intermittent and frequent rainshowers. But, it might keep you jumping up & down ;)

Other good hotels - Dann Carlton: very good hotel with swimming pool, very nice rooms, restaurants (one of them is a revolving restaurant on top of the building).
- Poblado Plaza: small hotel but very nice
- Novelty Hotel: designer hotel, very nice, next to Poblado Plaza

These three hotels are located along Avenida El Poblado close to major attractions (Malls, partying areas, etc.)

I have to agree with Miguel......... Anyone who spends 130-140 a night on a hotel in Medellin, needs to get his/her head examined.

I guess you would have to be there, Gomezman5 you, being a man of finer tastes and greater means, I'm certain would have been happy to stay at this establishment, and probably would have paid more.

and, some guys simply demand the best for the lady they love.
some simply like to live life lavishly.
not every one here goes to Colombia, just because you can get chics for free and the rest of the day on thirty bucks.
not every one here is poor :)
not every one here is happy :(

CHEER UP!

Gomezman5 says on Oct 15, 2006, 20:03:

Galecito That's a nice "spin" in response to what I posted. It has nothing to do with how many "chicks" I can get, or how much it would cost me to live each day.

I stand on what I said. If you spent or spend over a $100 a day for a HOTEL ROOM, (nothing more), you paid way too much. End of story.

there is a thing in this world called value; a relative concept. I can justify the expense in a thousand ways, but I'll spare you.

Gomezman5, if I remember correctly, it was you who recommended the Intercontinental Hotel in Cali and indicated that is the only place in Cali you stay, because of their security. I know what they charge for a night. And, that makes it seem as though you speak with forked tongue

Gomezman5 says on Oct 15, 2006, 21:11:

Fork tongue thinks: The rack rate....right from the Intercontinental web site is $100.80 a night in Cali. That is the highest rate obtainable. It does not take much work to get that rate reduced on line, or through a travel agent. Same is true for Medellin. Trust me, call the hotel, give them a credit card number to put throught the charge for the first night, and you can knock off %15 the rack (advertised rate) without a problem.

Also, Cali is Cali. Medellin is Medellin. There is a higher security concern in Cali. Therefore, I reccomended the Intercontinental based on their outstanding security. It is still the best in Cali....so says my friend at Startours (one of Cali's biggest travel agencies). And, at that time, I was able to get a rate of $64 a night when their rack rate was $78 a night.

Bottom line: You should be able to to get the Intercontinental for less than $100 a night in Medellin. I am 100% certain you will not pay anywhere near $130 - $140 a night. If you or someone did, they over paid. I am certain of that.

Thanks for the all the advice Thanks for all the recommendations - $130 a night is huge for Colombia but you would pay that for a crappy hotel in the UK and I do travel with the British pound (please save us from the Euro...). It also sounds like you get a suite like a palace. Also, my g/f is only here for a week so maybe I should blow the budget and we can live the high life for a couple of nights! Makes a change from $20US a day....

worldofbintang go for the room with the whirlpool. you are reading me right; it was exceptional, whether it was in New York City, Paris, Istanbul, Buenas Aires, or Medellin. If you have friends in Medellin other than your girlfriend, you got room for a party there on the bottom floor, either before or after a stroll or dinner down in Parque Lleras. Her and I walked there and back several times, at night too, and no problems. I think we were on the 7th floor. You can throw some of the windows open and see and hear alot of the city. The rooms at Park 10 Hotel are amongst the most memorable I have stayed in for a very long time.

hey sean... when was the last time you had your butt anywhere near the hotel nutibarra in medellin? last i'd seen of it, the marble floors and columns were polish to a point just this side of a mirror. the service was excellent, and the place showed no sign of disrepair, or sliding into less than a 4 star rating for decades. sure it's an old school kind of hotel, not one of the steel and glass monstrosities, but it still has a good, solid reputation.

SHERATON MDE WAS GREAT! I stayed there my first trip in Colombia and thought it was a very nice hotel in a real good area, was close to everything and the staff very helpful. Oviedo mall only 5 min. walk., good restaurant across the street and safe to walk to Aguacatala metro station if you want the exercise.

This a really good blog. Like info. on the other hotels. Thank you.

Gomez I think it's been a very long time, many years, since you have been to Cali, to the Intercontinental Hotel, for those rates. (Another PBHer even swears you only dream about being colombian, and in fact are three quarters mexican). Anyone on here thinking they can stay at the Intercontinental Hotel for under a c-note (or, 2!) a night better get busy checking on their own.

Worldofbintang... looking forward to your confirmation report soon!
