I didnt have the pleasure of staying there but i stayed at the Hotel Capricornio located carrera 44b No: 70-201. This was a pretty good hotel. I was there for the carnavals in February. I could not complain about the staff they treated us really good.

Hotel Majestic Yes, I know this place very well. I used to stay here before I found an apartment where I am able to short term lease (and I am not going to tell you about this place! Too many Americans have already discovered it and have driven up the rates). And since BAQ does not really have the tourist infrastructure of places like Cartagena and Bogota, the Majestic is a good alternative to the too-too costly El Prado (far too expensive and overrated) and the 2 "Puerto" hotels.

Anyway, the place seems to be where middle-class Colombians come to stay (have had extended stays there on 3 occasions and have yet to run across another gringo). Its rooms are clean and comfortable, and there is air-conditioning and hot water. The restaurant has decent food (though they frequently run out of items) and they will serve you in your room if you wish. The staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful, and they will always go that extra mile to help out. However, no English speakers if this is a problem for you. The premises seem to be old but well-maintained, and there is some interesting architecture for your standard hotel, especially in the large meeting rooms (almost a Moorish design). There are some shops and stores surrounding the hotel that will suit your immediate needs; if not, there is a taxi rank right outside. Also the Metro Center cinema is just down the street. However, DO NOT WALK AROUND AT NIGHT! Take a taxi somewhere where it is safe to do this as it can be a little dark and dicey at night (this from the staff).

Go for the jr. suite, just enough room to spread out, at a price of something like CO$ 115,000 per night (at least when I stayed), though they do have cheaper rooms. Also there may be a "Gringo" rate that is different and more expensive than say, the one that a Colombian friend would receive if they were to make the reservation for you.

Buen viaje, and give my saludos to Barranquilla (that is if I am not already there)...

Thanks for the advice
I was in Barranquilla in February and I stayed at a hotel called the "El Dorado". I stayed at this same hotel in August of 2003. They are similar to small apartments with a seperate bedroom and the first time I stayed there it was rather pleasant. This last time(in February) I was in the kitchen and I saw a mouse (raton) scurry across the floor. After I killed that mouse, my girlfriend and I saw another mouse in the bedroom the very next day. How romantic huh? I do not want to give any business a bad reputation but I guarantee that I will not stay at that hotel again. Also, when you look for hotels on an American search engine, the searches are all dominated by "Hotel Del Sol ' The Prago and the country del norte so it is nice to know about other hotels that I may use in the future. Thanks
