hotel in medellin

i am going to medellin for my third time this year, in two weeks and i am wondering if spending extra money to stay in a nice hotel is worth it, for security and amenities. i look gringo from a mile away. i am going for five days...planning on staying 3 days with friends and then 2 days in a hotel with chicas...anyone stayed at the dann carlton or intercontinental or such? are they worth $100 a night or should i stay in a $20 a night hotel? thanks for any info!

I like the ammenities I like staying in a nice Hotel so I really can't give you the best advice... Dont worry about the Gringo thing, Medellin is safe and I am sure you know that from visiting... I really cant understand the whole Gringo thing I mean I am Colombian and I look Colombian I guess but I live in the states and very one thinks I am italian here... I saw red head colombians in Medellin... Stay at what you like.... Do you like to save money or do you like to stay in a nice clean room and have it cleaned for you everytime you leave... The 4 points sheraton was real nice I was there like a week ago...

Torre Poblado is nice Stayed at Hotel Torre Poblado several times. Pretty nice hotel suites. I think i paid 60-70US when I was there earlier this year. Just a couple minutes walk to Parque Lleras as well.

Intercontinental Last February I stayed for 11 days at the Intercontinental. It was pretty nice, but I guess I would say the deciding factor would be what you plan on doing. On that trip I wanted to see the city but also wanted to hang out by the pool and relax. Also, since it was my first trip to Medellin, I wanted to start out in Poblado. If I were going to spend no time at the hotel, I would have opted for cheaper hotel (another factor for me was the rewards points I used, but that is a whole other issue). That's what I did on my trip to Barranquilla. Cheap(er) hotel, was almost never in the room except to sleep. I guess it also depends on if you are used to higher end accomodations. But if you don't mind a little more modest hotel, I think cheaper is probably the way to go.

Tomtom I realize there are parts in Medellin that aren't safe and your right there are parts that locals don't go, and if you are going there you should know these places like everywhere else new york, chicago, detroit, new jersey, la, san francisco, etc... Every on this site needs to stop taking remarks so serious... Medellin is safer then other places in Colombia Cali, Bogota, ect. And Tomtom for your information I traveled all around Medellin and if a Gringo is even planning on going to these places then it will be a mistake, kinda like if a Colombian desides to go to Camden NJ with out being black and being in a gang.... You know what i mean i just assume that he isn't that stupid to go to some of those places..

avoid the $20 hotels... and go to the (less than) $10 hotels instead! there are a few (love hotels) by parque berrios which are clean and not too bad. only complaint i had was a lack of screen on windows, but that tends to be everywhere in colombia!

papamac I'd say good advice so far here. If you want to spend a little more on a great hotel near Parque Lleras, I was extremely pleased with the 'Hotel Park 10'. I have already written a few posts on it, if you do a search here, or look up their website.

Cali - Medellin Hotels Hola!

I stayed at 3 hotels in Cali. The prices were 100,000, 40,000, & 60,000 pesos each during my 3 trips this fall. What is the sense of the Intercontinental? Hey, my GF's brother's company got that hotel for him last Sunday, but not everyone flies into Cali just for the Shakira concert. His company sponsored her tour!

I felt safe and secure at all three hotels. My novia picks the hotel and makes sure she likes them, then I go there. So Simple! Next time, I want to upgrade from the 60,000 room to the room with a hot tub for 2 in the room for 80,000 pesos with shower! They even have gratis condoms, cerveza, soda, and snacks included! It is estrata 5 neighborhood also!

For me, I do not feel unsafe in Cali, except when driving in traffic!

park 10 wow hotel park 10 looks really nice from their website....i think i will choose it. ...in my research, i looked at some of the companies that are selling hotels with female companions for sale, like aussie greg and such...but i think they are selling something that is free....or if not free, free to find yourself :-)

thanks for the info

It is exquisite, papamac. Did you find my other posts about it?
If you are not on the $20/day budget and enjoy some of the finer things in life, you will enjoy Park 10 Hotel.

park 10 wow...yah i just read u'r posts....sounds awesome...definately worth $100 something a night...i just paid $120 a night for a closet sized room in key west, florida for fantasy fest, so $100 something for a junior palace is definately worth it...room at the dinner table for 7 chicas too? whoo hoo!!!

Tomtom Why is it not correct to compare medellin to Us cities? I dont understand why I am not allowed to do that if you roll into a bad neighborhood in the states and don't know shit about it then guess what...Yes the result will be the same... Do you die totally different in Colombia or is it some different experience, getting killed is getting killed getting mugged is getting mugged and getting the shit kick out of you his getting the shit kicked out of you... I have gotten both mugged and the shit kicked out of me and I should be dead right now growing up in New York... MY point being that it is correct to compare a bad neighorhood in the states with a bad neighborhood in Colombia because one you should get the fuck out of there and two if you dont you can easily be killed...

But I understand what you mean about the person traveling... I just asumed he was knows where to go and where not too.. And that he can at least speak passable spanish..

Papamac, where did you stay the first 2 times in Medellin? give Papamac a break; it is his third time in Medellin. Not that 3 times makes you a veteran, but he must have a little more of a comfort zone than someone going on the first time.

"...staying 3 days with friends and then 2 days in a hotel with chicas..."

Are these 'chicas that you already know, or that you are hoping to get to know'? I am sure the Dann Carlton is also outrageous, if I remember correctly the website photos, and you can't go wrong at the Intercontinental, if that is the class of hotel you are looking for. Still, I recommend the Park 10 Hotel, and if they have one available, get the room with the jacuzzi! chicas? You'll probably have to throw them out,...jeje they won't be wanting to leave. Unless to go for a dance/drink somewhere, but they will be pulling you back to the room soon :)

medellin the first two times i stayed with friends that i met here in the U.S...in a spare bedroom in their house. the first time i only came for the weekend for a party for my friends' work, i wasn't sure about spending more time in a country like colombia...the next time, in July i came for 9 days....and saw a lot of medellin, santa fe de antioquia and the big rock thing. now, after hearing from everyone while i was there that i should come to see the christmas lights, i am coming for 5 days starting on a saturday. saturday night, a group of us are going to mangos...then sunday to santa fe de antiquoia, then monday to tour medellin again and see the lights that night...then tuesday and wednesday i am planning on staying in a hotel (and after advice on here, from galecito, park 10) i met a prepago last time i was there and have been chatting every once in a while with her on yahoo...planning on her and a couple of her friends to hang out with for those days. after all this, hopefully i will make it back to Jose Cuervo aeropuerto in one piece and with all my possesions by thursday :-) for background info, i speak 3rd or 4th grade spanish...have very good friends in colombia that wouldn't steer me in the wrong direction, and i think i am street smart..at least in america...i know that most colombians who work their ass off everyday at work make in one month what average americans make in two or three days of work...and i don't give papaya :-) so back to the original topic, i have gave it a lot of thought and am planning on getting one of the grand suites at park 10 and only allowing 3 in at a time :-)

strobers, I understand and appreciate your thriftiness. but, I guess some of us have had a few too many near death calls, and live more by the: "Hey, I-may-not-even-BE-HERE-TOMORROW" creed. Live it Up, Dude!
