He wants his pention from 15 years service in the Military. He is mad that FARC who abandon their war get money and fame and yet Colombian soldiers get nothing for their years of service.

It seems the guy got lots to say, and many here would not want to believe.

" A finales de 1981 aparece la cooperativa Convivir (conformada por varios miembros del Ejército), con el patrocinio de la Gobernación de Antioquia bajo el mando de ?lvaro Uribe. En ese mismo tiempo recibimos la orden en la cooperativa de eliminar a Navarro Wolf".

Paz aseguró que participó en el atentado de Navarro con una granada y aseguró que en el momento los felicitaron, pero cuando recibieron la noticia que el politico se había salvado, recibió un fuerte castigo.

I repeat...happens everywhere. Another slight comparison? Many of the Butchers Unions were "regulated" by the Mafia in the EEUU (sorry I consider FARC to be the guerrilla version of Mafia today). and most of the people that were up for retirement in the 90's got nothing because of illegal "investments" (ja!) that had zero returns. It is still happening. Wait for the employees of most major newspapers to retire! Guess where that retirement money went?

Same situation only different ;))

Mr. Hollywood says on May 21, 2008, 10:50:

Seems a bit of a common theme - disgruntled vets with grenades. Remember the guy and his dad in the wheelchair who smuggled grenades on a commercial flight and flew to Bogota where they held hostages, all because the guy had never gotten paid his settlement for getting shot by the cops?

Maybe it's a sign Colombia should work out the bureaucratic red tape a little better.

Mr H: Maybe it's a sign Colombia should work out the bureaucratic red tape a little better.

Yes...but I think they need to also be more vigilant vs unaccountable. Seems to be too much vagueness in the system ...creating that feeling of powerlessness

Mr. Hollywood says on May 21, 2008, 11:06:

Sure. I don't disagree at all. It's shameful when people who fought for a country get the runaround from the "system."

I was stunned a while ago when I learned a friend of mine was working with homeless vets in the USA. I said, "Oh, you mean Viet Nam vets?" and she said, "No, I mean young guys who just came back from combat in Iraq and are now homeless." It's a big problem, not just a few people. Really shocking and shameful, whether its happening in Colombia or the USA.

seems to me it's only a sign that there oughta be a police sniper better positioned. you don't take hostages to get attention for personal problems.

juancegomez says on May 21, 2008, 13:57:

Threatening people with death or injury is not a valid way of getting attention in my book. Even if your own life is at stake, you shouldn't try to deal death and harm to others, especially to people who have nothing to do with your problems.

I feel some initial human pity and empathy for this man, to a point, but I don't know the details of his case and it would be too much of me to say what the government did wrong, what the man did wrong (in terms of his pension requirements) and so forth. If the government failed him, and it's likely it did because "the system" is quite flawed as we can see on a regular basis, there must be other ways, even if they aren't as spectacular, to find a solution and force the state to give him what he is owed, if he so deserves it. The rest, I cannot say.

I have worked with Disabled Vets for many years, in the U.S. and there are many programs out there to help them. The problem is the lack of knowlege about the programs. Never in my 45 years of life, has programs for Vets been so good! The main problem is....too get halp from the Government, you have to go through The Government. (and that frase speaks for itself).
