Honey Production in Colombia

TengaFlipHole has a thread about honey serving as an erection enhancer in the Off Topic section (or did have). Which left me rather curious as to the state of honey production, or otherwise, in Colombia. A quick squint at Wikipedia shows that it isn't on the list of significant producers, but I'm wondering if there's a degree of small scale, boutique beekeeping over there. With its vast range of tropical and subtropical flowers, I should imagine Colombian honey would be a multivaried and quite fascinating culinary experience.

Has anyone tried Colombian honey?

As in bee honey.

There is a large and diverse cottage industry of apiarists in Colombia, particularly in the mid-level highland plateau below Bogota, where the climate is conducive to the long-term establishment of colonies.

I have always suspected (and it appears from your reference above that you share this suspicion) that this is because of the popularity of honey and honey derivatives (bee pollen etc) as folk remedies. Enter any health food store in Colombia and you are likely to find an entire wall of honey and honey-based products.

Now as for its euphemistic meanings, I think it was your countryman who put it best "hey hey mama when you walk that way I watch your honeydrip I can't keep away..."

Bee polin has been said to help in male performance and sperm production. Either take bee pollin pills or eat honey in semi large quantities and see what it does for you. Like 2 tablespoons a day, split of course!

Yes I have tried Colombian honey, most of them, they are pretty damn good but they are sometimes less than revered by the locals. Reason being, Colombian honey wherever it is produced seems to crystallise in the Bogotá climate. So it is neither a runny honey nor a "creamed" honey but a sort of runny honey with lumps in it. Not important if you want to drop a spoonful of it in a cup of chamomile tea, nor if you are prepared to stand it in a bowl of warm water for 10 minutes before partaking. But a bit offputting if you want to neck a spoonful on the hop.

Healthfood shops have an interesting line in honies with propóleo. It will cure whatever you ask the shopowner for it to cure. They make it up as they go along

To answer the question-Yes and the best *Honey* I have ever has was produced in Colombia.

I don't say that lightly I've been to many many places and have had people bring me Honey from many more but Colombia tops them all-probably as the Chowhound post says because of the incredible biodiversity in Colombia.

"It will cure whatever you ask the shop owner for it to cure. They make it up as they go along"

LOL!!

That's true almost everywhere except Turkey where Bees are used to produce from certain plants/herbs Honey that used for various treatments-and has been for centuries.

It's expensive and not really for eating on toast as a snack at all.

Best, beyond a doubt, I have ever tasted-especially from Palmira. It was honey from the blossoms on lime trees. Always bought a couple of jars when we lived in Cali and passed through Palmira

Interesting replies chaps.

Tht 'hey mama...' made me laugh gato. Who were you quoting?

Bill- your neighbour- does he sell a lot of honey? At 20,000 a pop, sounds like a nice earner by Colombian standards.

Interesting comments from Johnny and Gator re climate and location. I visit Palmira about once a year- I'll make a point of getting some honey there some time.

kalder, much of what you are referring to as 'alternative medicine' is not medicine, but would more appropriately be labelled as wellness care, or pro-active good health care.

Credit where credit is due, honey is by no means the most potent medicine on the market, but it does have proven antibacterial qualities (some more than others)

Avid PBH readers will know that I brought a case of Manuka through DIAN about a month ago and when it arrived I had a particularly aggressive dose of "Bogotá bottom" which I had self diagnosed as being due to an intestinal infection.

Needless to say half a jar of UMF12 later and my bottom was as fit as a fiddle. So back to the matter in hand. Supposing my body's energies were devoted to fighting off the baddies in my stomach, then having taken honey and cured me of the troubles, I would have more energy a couple of days later for nocturnal sports. As such it could be argued that honey had enhanced the turgidity of my wood
