Honestly: I JUST WANT TO PARTY IN COLOMBIA

I have 2 weeks. Although I do want to do some cultural stuff this will not be the main thrust of my visit. Can anyone recommend an itinerary for 25 year old single guy?

ps I have much respect and love for my country since I'm from there....

From my trip in Medellin, I can tell you that the so-called "great nightlife" is only a myth ; Medellin is a total morgue Sun/Wed, nothing to do but staying in your room with your girl(s). Weekends are better but nothing to rave about.

There's anyway nothing which can be compared to other parts of SA : choose any mid-sized to big brasilian city like Curitiba, Goiania, Campinas, Porto Alegre, Manaus, Belem or Belo Horizonte, (to name a few, and without even mentionning Rio or Sao Paulo), and you won't be wrong, nightlife will be good seven/days a week ;

From some posters here (Caslug), Cali is also completly dead on weekdays.

I wouldn't go to Colombia exclusively for partying.

To hardly party, beside Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires, I'd choose any asian city like Singapore, Jakarta, KL, Shangai, ect.., where nightlife is fantasticly rich and where there's, in each of those cities, hundreds of tremendous spots packed to the walls EVERY day of the week till dawn. Even New York or London can't compete with Jakarta or Shangai.

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking that I'll go to Medellin first and check out the scene and the scenery. Then, if it seems dead or boring I'll move on to Santa Marta and see Ciudad Perdida or Coffee Country or something. You're right though BA is out of hand, I like that its similar nightlife to Miami but like a 1/4 of the price.

Some interesting comments, go2pr, which are exactly in keeping with my experience of Medellin. And not just because I am some ancient old guy who's bed-ridden. PeanutButterBoy, on another thread, was busy slamming me for having the nerve to suggest what you are saying here and he had never been to Medellin. He was convinced that the place was rocking and that we were too stupid to know what was going on in a city my wife had lived in for 25 years. Nice to see some validation!

The gold museum is not bad, go there and then later go and visit the cathedral.
Since you are already there in the neighbourhood, scale the Monserrate and enjoy the nice view over Bogota from up there.

Sorry man I have to disagree. The gold museum is an absolute joke. If you are from the states, which I assume you are, don't bother with the gold museum. Hell dont bother with much of the touristy sites like museums or cathedrals and stuff. Dont worry about going to see the parliament or whatever the hell its called. Its a waste of time.

Maybe the only cool thing site seeing wise would be to scale the monserrate mountain and get a view of bogota that way but unless youre in good shape dont try to walk it unless you want to feel like dying when you get to the top. Thats from PERSONAL experience my friend.

anyway what I recommend if you want to get a good taste of the culture and stuff is just walk around the parts where people at. Go to the zona rosa in bogota where all the restaurants and night clubs and stuff are. Tahts pretty cool. I really had a better time the second time I went because I didnt have to waste time site seeing I just went where the people were and just chilled. I prefer going to a small town called Barbosa in santander and just hitting whatever small pubs and clubs they have there and just chilling with the people getting drunk. I don't need to go site seeing and don't really like staying too much in a city like Bogota because a city there is just like a city anywhere in the states.

Big Apples and Small Oranges Comparing Medellin to Rio is like comparing Apples to Oranges.
Rio is among a handful of world-class cities, like New York, London, Berlin ect.

Medellin and Cali are both provincial cities that are not truly comparable in any way. (I mean there are probably more clubs, restaurants or museums in a typical ten-block area in NYC or London than the whole city of Medellin or Cali)

As for Bogota, it is more comparable to Medellin and Cali than to Rio or BA.

Of course, people can have fun just about anywhere...

Travelling in Colombia I agree with most of the posts here that the night life in Colombia cities is pretty dead Sunday to Wednesday. (Bogota has a good nightlife on Wednesdays)

I suggest that if you want to to do some travelling visit small towns midweek (ie coffee region, Barichara, Parque Tyrona, San Gil etc) and get to the big cities for the weekends if you like big clubs. Although you might find that the people in small towns party a lot harder than those in the cities on a Saturday night. Depends what you call partying listening to bad techno in a club set up so you will like you could be anywhere in the world or sitting in a corner store with everyone drunk, singing and buying you drinks.

I think this quotes hysterical to get a taste of Colombias culture go to Zona Rosa.

Carter, you took the words right outta my mouth. La Zona Rosa, the real Colombia, yeah right!! Hell, I’ll take you to see the real Colombia, the broke ass Colombian and yes they do party a lot harder. Go any day of the week to the worst neighborhoods in Barranquilla and you find drunks and vallenato blasting 24/7. Take a ride along Murrillo to the many bars and whore establishments lined up next to each other, any day of the week and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Is it safe to go there? for some people, absolutely NOT!
I fancy myself a party animal, but these people put me to shame. One Monday morning I found myself heading, with my cousin, to the bus station in Barranquilla. We were going to El Rodadero. She was going there to take a hotel something training and I was going there to get drunk and chase young broads around. The bus station is near a real hell hole in Barranquilla called “La Chinita a dusty, dirt road with big gigantic crators, lots of dirty old faded coloforful buses barely missing pedestrians, and people riding decrepit old motor cycles, cars, and guys on donkeys. The sound of horns and music compete for attention. I ask my cousin what’s with all that loud music on a Monday morning and what’s with all those drunks over there, singing and dancing. Some had enough and were passed out next to some filthy dog, and others passed out on the table while the ones with the best perico partied on. Is amazing how excellent but cheap perico, good music, and booze do to keep your spirits up.

Ok guys, I’m tired now, I think I go home.

Different strokes for different folks. To me you see more of the real Colombia in the places Elmo's talking about - his description reminds me of the main road that runs along the Sinu River in Monteria. Or one of the toll booths further out like the one at Los Cedros where everybody's selling something waving it in your car window and everybody else is just hanging out listening to an old radio and watching who's going up the road.

That's pretty interesting Elmo. I'm Latin, (cuban/colombian) and I speak pretty fluent spanish although after a few minutes of convo you can tell its not my first language. I look pretty much like the typical colombian ;light olive skin/black hair. If I went to any of these places you're talking about would I be running the risk of ending up shanked in a gutter somewhere? I'm not being facetious, I'd just like to check that scene out too if possible.

Hey man the guy said he just wanted to party...if thats what he wants to do the zona rosa is perfect for that. Maybe I worded it wrong when I said it would be a good taste of colombian "culture"...more like colombia "partying" is what I shouldve said. But if someone from overseas tells me they want to experience american culture Im not going to take them to a ghetto Im going to take them to south beach. Thats good ole american culture right there.

Anyway as far as the Gold museum Im sorry man its a joke. When youve been to the smithsonian's and museums in new york and then you go to the gold museum its an absolute joke. There was nothing interesting to see in there. All they had was maybe a couple of floors of stuff then the whole last part of it was just a bunch of action figures playing the role of indiginous people.

Zepp says on Apr 9, 2005, 11:03:

It may very well indeed house the largest amount of gold or whatever...but they sure as hell didn't show it. Im sorry but as a tour it sucked. When I think of museums I think of the smithsonians, the museums in new york, the art museum in Ft. Lauderdale. THOSE are museums. The gold museum was an absolute joke tourist wise...you saw nothing of any interest there. It wasn't good as museums go.

Museum You might have gone last year when the musuem closed for renovation, but there were huge signs stating it was closed for renovation, only a small section remained open. It only opened again in a new building behind the old one in January and the old section will be renovated and incorporated in two years. It used to be three floors, it is now four floors and it will end being seven floors.

I've never been to the Smithsonian so I don't know what their collection or presentation of pre-Colombian gold is like, but I felt I got my money's worth at the Bogota Museo de Oro. I took my electronic dictionary and tried to understand what the explanations said. I got into conversation with a Colombiana who helped me a great deal and I learned a lot about the various tribes, which is why I went. The final room was spectacular. It's round and they close the door, turn off the lights, and the room revolves as a round display of sevaral levels in the floor becomes lit. Everybody in the room was obviously impressed.

Dude going to places considered not too safe, is not about whether you’re black or white or what ever, is all about your attitude and the way you dress. If you want to party south of Barranquilla looking and acting like pewee Herman, of curse you gonna get your ass kicked. You gotta walk around with an attitude, you give them THAT LOOK , the look that says “look you ugly modefoque, you f--k with me and you’re a dead man Let me tell you, I walk around like that and that’s why I never had any problem in the roughest places in Barranquilla. I learned that look in NYC subways. If you got some crazy sonamanbiche just 2 feet away looking at you, you stared him down right back no matter if you’re scare shitless. I’m going to tell you something, but please don’t tell anyone else. If some guy pulls a gun on me, I’m going to run like 5 year old scared little girl, but they don’t know that.

Upper Class Suipacha - if you're looking for "upper-class women in Medellin", there's no doubt that you want to party in Parque Lleras (the Zona Rosa), Mangos, Trilogia, and a hand-full of other places scattered around town.

As far as Parque Lleras, aside from partying, just go to lunch in any of the restaurants around the park and you'll find hot, upper-class women any given day.

Either way, you're going to have a good time. Enjoy!
