The closer they align with Chavez and his socialist axis, the more strained their relations with Washington.

The more strained their relations with Washington, the less aid they will receive.

Good Luck Honduras, you need the USA more than the USA needs you.

Well... read the last part:

US doesn’t object

Given that Honduras's participation in ALBA will be highly restricted, opposition, mainly from local business associations, is likely to recede, while relations with the US are unlikely to suffer serious damage. In fact, the US ambassador, Hugo Llorens, has stated that Honduras's membership of ALBA will not affect US-Honduran bilateral relations—at the end of September the US approved an extension until July 2010 to the Temporary Status Protection (TPS), a temporary immigration status allowing Hondurans who arrived in the US before December 31st 1999 to work there.

Also, keep in Mind that Honduras was also very quick to jump aboard free trade agreements with the US, while it took other C.A. countries like Costa Rica a little longer:

Associated Press
Honduras Ratifies CAFTA
03.03.2005
Honduras on Thursday became the second Latin American country after El Salvador to ratify a free trade agreement with the United States.
"It was a decision that took awhile in Congress, but it brings Honduras into the global economy," congressional vice president Emil Hawit said after the vote.

AND keep in mind that Honduras during the 1980s and early 90s (during the Contra/Sandanista/El Salvador Civil War period) was once sarcastically referred to as the "USS Honduras" because of the amount of US mlitary personnel, bases, weapons and overall influence from Reagan's Washington. In fact, near a major Honduran city, Comayagua, there is Palmerola, the chief U.S. military base in Honduras -- which is still operating as far as I know.

I am not throwing stones here, it's just that one would really have to question whether the U.S. is truly worried about "losing" Honduras, a longtime U.S. ally, to any Hugo Chavez domino effect.

Any responsible latinamerican government has to look for good relations to its neighbours more than to the USA, as US influence in the whole world will be diminishing in the near future. And Colombia under Uribe is quite alone these days.

I don`t see anything wrong with this agreement. Sounds a lot better than some IMF agreement would ever be

"And Colombia under Uribe is quite alone these days."

Hardly. Colombia has excellent relations with Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Paraguay, all of Central America, except for Chavez' mangy lapdog Ortega. The only ones Colombia has problems with are Chavez' lackeys who are bought and paid for, like Correa, The aforementioned Ortega, Evo and Cristina, but with his oil money spigot now ending, they are the ones who will become isolated. Obviously you don't know what you are talking about.

BTW, as a sign of things to come, Chavez earlier this week announced that the oil refinery he promised to build in Nicaragua in 2011, will now not be built until 2018, hmmm hmmm hmmm.

How hypocritical of you, you germans are glowing about the election of Obama, you look to him as the leader of the world, yet he is an American..Obviously though you have a lot of anger and hate for americans, so people like you will hate Obama six months from now, when he has to take action, perhaps he will not sanction Israel, after they hit Iran ( which is coming very soon), you people will get angry, because deep deep down you equate americans with jews also, and we know how your people love jews. you especially showed your love to six million of them"

Or when Obama orders the invasion of Pakistan...

Dolfi says on Oct 24, 2008, 04:33:

The local Imam is probaly advising his people who to vote for:

""Al-Qaeda will have to support McCain in the coming election," said a commentary posted Monday on the extremist Web site al-Hesbah, which is closely linked to the terrorist group. It said the Arizona Republican would continue the "failing march of his predecessor," President Bush.

The Web commentary was one of several posted by Taliban or al-Qaeda-allied groups in recent days that trumpeted the global financial crisis and predicted further decline for the United States and other Western powers. In language that was by turns mocking and ominous, the newest posting credited al-Qaeda with having lured Washington into a trap that had "exhausted its resources and bankrupted its economy." It further suggested that a terrorist strike might swing the election to McCain and guarantee an expansion of U.S. military commitments in the Islamic world.

"It will push the Americans deliberately to vote for McCain so that he takes revenge for them against al-Qaeda," said the posting, attributed to Muhammad Haafid, a longtime contributor to the password-protected site. "Al-Qaeda then will succeed in exhausting America."
