:D

Lots of people are trying to make something of that, but it's just a smokescreen. Florida senator Bill Nelson (a DEMOCRAT of all things!) has let it slip that he planned it:

``We were waiting for just the right moment, and I am elated that the Colombian military has succeeded.''

latingirl, good point....Did not know though McCain was leaving Cartagena, thought he was still there and was to look at how the drug interdiction or Plan Colombia was going on his second day....

As far as the operation goes, this will be the laughing stalk of the military for years to come...Anxious to see what is going on internally with the FARC now and in regards to those still being held.

Anyhow, just too many coincidences in my mind.
This is fantastic news for all hostages however as a whole, believe this was a ploy on several fronts.
a.) President Uribe is battling his Senate on constitutional grounds about his last re-election.
b.) A Stalemate in negotiations with the FARC.
c.) The Free Trade Agreement being on the melting pot for not passing in the U.S.
d.) Plan Colombia being under the microscope and looked more into.
e.) President hopefuls being scrutinized more and the Republicans need a tip of balance in their favor to better secure its interests on all fronts.
f.) Presidential hopeful McCain just happens to be in country working to secure the above and a deep look into Plan Colombia benefits.
g.) Independance day celebrations across the U.S. Friday.
and a few more issues that we are reading about....

Strongly believe this was in the works for awhile and the Government knew exactly where these hostages were, but was waiting for the right timing politically motivated?

Another thing that erks me if the global attention on Ingrid...She did what she did to get in her predicament, what about the 3 U.S. contractors....the 11 Colombian Security personnel and others that are still chained up, seems like people loose focus too easily. Did not see 1 article on the 3 contractors (Until today), nor if McCain had met personally with them before they headed out of country...This would look real bad in my opinion on the U.S. and the Government as a whole, especially since McCain was there already. I hope I am wrong in my assumptions.

Whoever planned it, I'm elated for the Hostages and their families that the rescue went off without a hitch and they are free and safe. That said, I hope the 3 Americans find another line of work less risky.

Prez Uribe-too bad they couldn't put him in charge here in tracking down Bin Laden. I firmly belive now that if he was in charge on this matter, he would have pulled the trigger on Bin laden(hell with public opinion) when we had him in our sights but due to Political Correctness here in the US, we let him go, our leaders afraid of Public reaction and the preceeding risk.

I do believe the other lower value hostages will take a back seat at best in the long term future and at worst, extremely cruel treatment in retaliation for the Rescue yesterday. I doubt McCain was in Col for any other reason then what he claims. Look at this angle, what if the rescue mission turned bad and into another "Blackdown Scenario". This was a real possibility also and I really think, if he had advance Intel on the mission and knowing it could as easily have turned into a disaster, he would have postponed his trip until after it was over where he couldn't be tied to anything. Unless there was anything but a 100% guaranteed mission Sucess, McCain wouldn't have been within 3000 miles of Colombia! McCain didn't reach 3 score and 7 by being that stupid(I still would never vote for him--LOL) I look at his being there as someone just passing thru,,,

Lampltr--True, Betancourt knew it was dangerous to go where she did but also those 3 American Hostages knew exactly what the risks were also before going into this line of Work! And they were well payed for their work. They knew(being ex military) that what happened to them was a very real possibility all the time! As far as this swaying any fast track action on the FTA with Colombia, I doubt its going to happen, at least not until after the election in mid 2009 at the earliest. Too many other pressing problems affecting the US with Voters focused on Record High Oil Prices($144 barrel), Iraq, threats of military action with Iran, a US Stock market that is 20% down from its High in October 2008, a growing Unemployment/Jobless rate.

don't fantasize some mc cain envolvement in this. common. he--himself--still fantasizes that time in prison camp qualifies him for the oval office. with all due respect to the senator, it's simply not true. he's a good--old--man and in the race. but he doesn't possess any special qualifications as a result of imprisonment. like all prisoners of war, when tortured, he talked. told them what ever they wanted to hear (his own words). all the POW's did. who fuckin cares. the good point is, he, and others, made it out alive.

Oh God! Another conspiracy theory.

Personally I feel there was a second tree involved in Sonny Bono's death.

Mike, I was thinking the same thing too. I tend to vote somewhat left of center, but this guy is my kind of conservative. . . intelligent, articulate, keeps a low profile, i.e., avoids "trash talking" unlike our Texas cowboy. And he actually DELIVERS what he's been talking about since running for office. Has a disciplined, effective team backing him up, etc. etc. blah blah

Have you seen the pictures of Uribe multi-tasking, handling multiple cell phones and conversations? Meanwhile, our dear leader can just barely speak English, lol! :-))

Uribe is fighting a more effective "war on terror" than Dumbya. I wish we could hire him! ;)

LOL

Bravo, Presidente Uribe for the perfect operation!
