hips don't lie?

i just saw the video of this crap song, which quite frankly i found embarissing to watch.

what is shakira thinking?

some lyrics for you:

Senorita, feel the conga, let me see you move like you come from Colombia

Mira en Barranquilla se baila así, say it!
Mira en Barranquilla se baila así

Yeah
She's so sexy every man's fantasy a refugee like me back with the Fugees from a 3rd world country
I go back like when 'pac carried crates for Humpty Humpty
I need a whole club dizzy
Why the CIA wanna watch us? [Shakira/Wyclef Jean]
Colombians and Haitians
I ain't guilty, it's a musical transaction
No more do we snatch ropes
Refugees run the seas 'cause we own our own boats

what on earth are they singing about, "feel the conga,"
this song irritates the hell out of me. please tell me im not the only one?
the video itself is annoying, even without the idiotic clown lyrics.

The lyrics? You gotta be kidding me.

Shakira is dancing her ass off, being all the eye-candy that any straight man with functioning eyes could wish for, and you're talking about the lyrics? She could be singing the alphabet for all I care. She could hum the lyrics. LOL!!!

It's a dance song, they rarely make sense. If you can't dance, you might not get it. If you watch any Latina go crazy on the dance floor when this song gets played the 1st time, you'll understand all you need to. Hips don't lie!

Well now they will expect everybody from Colombia especially Barranquilla to Dance like that. :0 .

BTW I have read many post here, stating that they don't want Colombia to become a tourist destination, where Foreigners just come for the women. Well this song and video won't help at all.

I just see in the near future Barranquilla being invade, soory Elmo including strato 1 jijij

the video is lame! come on people, the only relevence to colombia, or barranquilla for that matter are some costumes.
a few costumes are not even barranquillero, they're like mexican or something.
whats with the set, i never went to carnival in some alleyway, with all clothes hanging up.
my question is, has shakira even been to carnival?

the hips lie!

maybe she should work as an aguila girl, to get a proper feel of carnival.

In Barranquilla it's hard not to find some sort of Carnaval related activity ANYWHERE during the celebration. Elmodofoque and yours truly had some great carnaval moments in this little tienda about the size of a living room in a strata 2 house.

And we have the DVD to prove it!

Elmo Burn me a copy of the unedited version. That should keep me laughing for a long time. I'll be up in NYC for mom's day wkd. I've give you a call.

Btw, Wyclef is Haitian, as stated in the song. The dude is now fluent in like 5 languages, having taught himself English, amongst others, when they "moved" up to New Jersey. He's legal now.

About this song, if you didn't know, this is a remixed version of the original which featured Claudette Ortiz of a group called City High. DGoogle it, if you wish. Wyclef and Shakira re-did the words and the music. Therefore, some of the lyrics are forced. However, who really cares? It's a hot song and video.

And, yes, Haiti and Colombia are both 3rd world nations. Haiti, much worse off than Colombia, but both suffer. Here's the 2006 Failed States Index. If not for the lack of "Sharp and/or Severe Economic Decline" in Colombia, the failure rate would be closer.

http://www.fundforpeace.org/programs/fsi/fsindex2006.php?column=rank&#

Now again, who cares about the lyrics? Barranquilla's on the map, baby!!!! And Shakira is shaking all that her mama gave her.

The increase in interest in belly dancing classes by females can predominantly be attributed to her. Just the same as butt implants can be attributed to Jennifer Lopez in her videos. Anyone remember any of Jlo's lyrics? Again, who really cares?

10% of women think their ass is too skinny ...

The other 5% say that they don't care, they love him, he's a good man, and they would have married him anyway.

Don't know about the CIA... ...but US Immigration and Customs Enforcement have targeted me for a 2nd thorough screening in my last 4 trips back from Colombia. I have no criminal record of any sort, no drugs or anything, nor any reason for my name to come up in any random selection.

The 1st 2 times, I chalked up to just being random. The 3rd time, I asked for a supervisor to explain exactly what is in my profile. Of course, they are say there is nothing on my passport number/profile, and that is just random. Nor would they show me my profile. The 4th time it happened, I let them do their thing. I have also contacted a lawyer.

I'm not Colombian. I was born and raised in the USA. I'm living the dream of being able to work honestly and earn enough to travel abroad to foreign countries for fun frequently. One of the possible reasons offered to me by US ICE for my 2nd screenings might be because of the country that I visited. Definite profiling.

To the GringoDs, and UCs, paranoid, I'm not. This is real. I can only imagine what a Colombian in the same position as me would be subjected to.

I also had a problem with Immigration I was singled out, a couple of years ago, returning from a visit to Colombia for an interview and a baggage search with Immigration. I filed a request under the Freedom of Information Act for the reason for which I was detained. About nine months later, I received in the mail copies of computer print outs showing every foreign trip that I had made for the prior five, or so, years. The computer print-out pertaining to the trip during which I was detained had a section to indicate the reason for which I was detained. But, the government inked out the section so that I could not read the text. The government stated its rationale for not letting me see that section was that I would know the reason for which I was detained. So, after nine months of waiting, the government's reply to my FOI request was to deny my request, but in a manner that superficially seemed as though they complied with my request. I hadn't had any other problem with Immigration during the intervening nine months, so I let the matter drop.

Lost in Translation I find it interesting that you criticise Shakira for the lyrics by highlighting a part that's clearly got Wyclefs paws all over it.

I actually like the bizareness of the lyrics in many of her songs.

"I love you for free but I'm not your mother" - I can't make up my mind if that's profound or banal, either way there's a touch of lunacy there.

"If I say my heart is sore sounds like a cheap metaphor." - That's more than just simple rhyming, it's knowingly mocking the angsty drama of heartbreak ballads (Not that she's not guilty of knocking them out herself as well).

"Lucky that my breasts are small and humble so you don't confuse them with mountains" - Whats more amazing about the line is that she plays it straight, it's not self deprecating, it's championed.

The song Hips Don't Lie is pretty clear that's its about having your cake and eating it and a deep and meaningful dissection of the lyrics is ultimately rather pointless.

But one thing I will agree with, the song is crap. Far from her best work.

Cockney Colombian says on May 12, 2006, 01:16:

Well I'm not fluent in Spanish so just in terms of lyrics I am gonna be biased towards her English sung albums. That said I've not listened to the latest album, other than heard the track Hips Don't Lie, but it hasn't had very favourable reviews. The video is bizare and silly in a good way but the song itself is rubbish.

As a coherent piece, I like the live album from the Tour of the Mongoose. I like Underneath Your Clothes but there's a dose of The Bangles there so it can't be called pure Shakira.

My favourite in Spanish are Ciega Sordomunda and Ojos Asi and in English Objection (Tango) and Poems to a Horse. It's my understanding that the lyrics to the Spanish version of Tango are completly different, whilst the English sung version of Ojos Asi doesn't have the same dizzying impact, it's still good but there feels like there's something missing.

Whenever, Wherever (Or Suerte if you prefer) is the only one that really crossesover and both Spanish and English versions are good, certainly the line "Suerte que mis pechos sean pequenos y no los confundas con montanas" remains!

Opinions anybody else?

"appear". Why the quote marks?

The original poster specifically aimed criticism at Shakira for her lyrics (And unfair criticism I feel as the highlighted passage was clearly Wyclef) and I responded as such, and branched off further into a discussion of her lyrics in general.

There seems to be an opinon that either she is an empty headed bimbo fit only for jiggling round the stage or as I tend to think an artist with talent and an offbeat poetry to her lyrics. And whilst I'm not immune to the jiggling my interest in Shakira is primarily the power of the music and the lyrics.

I never claimed a song needs to be "intellectually" rationalised, certainly a song like Hips Don't Lie can be boiled to a very simple "Sex is great int it?".

Whilst I don't agree with the original posters points and criticisms, I still think the song is crap, a poor example of Shakira's work, and the tune is pretty grating as well. I'm content to blame Wyclef though, rather than her.

If "MOST OF THE REST OF THE WORLD" [sic] enjoy the song, then I say good for them, I neither bregrudge them their entertainment nor seek to change their opinions so they more closely resemble my own.
