where is here? Different city, different ISPs

What I have, I do not want to lose, but Where I am I do not want to stay, but those I love, I do not want to leave, but those I know I no longer want to see, but Where I die, I do not want to go;I want to stay where I have never been

hi, I've got broadband in cali and use telecom, its as quick as anywhere else I've used and run 4 off one box and more if clients use wifi.

jonas says on Apr 11, 2008, 15:03:

ing, anyway you are lucky because TelMex has just come to Colombia so prices have come down big

If you are in Barranquilla, I would recommend Telecom (Telefonica) DSL first, second Metrotel. DO NOT get Teledinamica (Dinanet) under any circumstances if your primary purpose for having broadband is to talk via Vonage.
I you are anywhere else in Colombia then I can't really recommend anybody but I would try to stick with DSL providers.

A minimun of 128kbps upload speed will work, but would recommend at least 256kbps upload speeds.

TelMex looks very good but maybe introductory prices or long irreversable contracts is the catch, however the promo girls are stunning and worth chatting to ha

jonas says on Apr 11, 2008, 15:55:

I hear their service is not so good but I have not used them myself. But what I meant to say with TelMex is that all their competitors here have almost halved their prices since they got into business here. Competition is where it´s at...

jonas says on Apr 11, 2008, 15:57:

If you want a good price you have to sign up for a year, I believe that to be true with all the ISPs
I got 3 months of free service with ETB for signing a 1 year contract.

i had nothing but issues with vonage here in mde. as soon as i downloaded skype, i never had another problem. i have high speed (banda ancha) from epm (triple play).

my glass is getting shorter on whiskey, ice and water...

Chriscan says on Apr 11, 2008, 18:22:

Skype doesn't need much bandwidth and I think its cheaper

I can't get internet in my house. One company says I can get it from them in June so I figure in a year or so.

My Skype works fine on 200MB cable (with better voice quality than telephone), and even in hotel via WiFi.

I even have a Skype-In number in area code 717 (Pennsylvania) which out-calls to my cell-phone in Panamá, if I am not on the computer (2 cents per minute for incoming call).

I also have a U.S. mailing address with AeroBox in Miami, which makes life in Latin America do-able.

i use skype at 500kbs and it work great like being next to the person...i was surprised at the clear voice

listo

if in cali do as I do, direct tv for tv only, telecom for phone and internet, skype on you pc for cheap outgoing calls only , works and cheap

I have had good luck with UNE...although GETTING the service up-and-running with wait times and a ridiculous process of activation is a headache in itself.

I don't know the exact details on what is required for activation as far as your residency here...I got it with a temporal visa and a cedula extranjero. Get someone who speaks Spanish to help you with the phone calls, and the visit you will have to make to the local sales/payment office if it is your first account with them.

By the way, I have 1000kbps and it works great...got off the Cable and went DSL in my new place. I pay about 165k COP for triple play (DSL, full cable with movies and a phone line) monthly in Estrato 3. Are you having luck with Vonage? I never did...and switched to Skype.

The "lovemedellin website" is a piece of crap made by some moron who has only been to Medellin once...you'd be better off reading the Lonely Planet advice from a guy who never even came here!

vicshere says on Apr 13, 2008, 05:57:

1,000,000kbs and 2,000,000 kbs for 165,000 and 170,000 including your phone holy shit thats dam cheap

listo

Frank Rizzo says on Apr 13, 2008, 07:14:

Hi Vic....i'm no computer specialist.....i may have the units confused.....okay...

We had high speed at 500 (whatever the unit), it was pretty fast.....now they tell us it's 4X faster...ie. 2000 (whatever).....

What the hell are those units....??? Yes..the 500 was 200mil cop per month before....so they dropped the price !!

vicshere says on Apr 13, 2008, 07:18:

sorry should have typed 1,000 kbs and 2,000 kbs which is 1,000,000 bits per second and 2,000,000 bits per second

yea that's what I have 500 kbs and i am paying about 110,000 including unlimited local calls

listo

Frank Rizzo says on Apr 13, 2008, 07:21:

Hi Vic..ahhh ...no problem....i'm always confused by those numbers anyway......are you in Cali?? and using EMCali???

If so...give 'em a call...and they'll switch it out in like 2-3 weeks..for the 2000 kbs.. a friend got it yesterday...we're waiting...they got a real 1200 kbs ...on the test website..not bad.

vicshere says on Apr 13, 2008, 07:26:

nope in Bucaramanga the 2,000kbs is too expensive something like 300,000 per month too rich for my blood...the 500 is fine for now

listo

jorgegdiaz says on Apr 13, 2008, 08:17:

If it´s ASDL, that 500 Kbps should be downloading and 250 Kbps uploading.

Man with hole in pocket feel cocky all day.

vicshere says on Apr 13, 2008, 08:25:

yes more or less i doing 479 down and 219 up

listo

edpeluffo says on Apr 13, 2008, 10:19:

512kbps Download speed should give about 256kbps upload speed. Normally, the upload speed is half the dowload but not always.

When it comes to VoIP, your upload speeds are very important. You need about 128kbps minumum (UPLOAD) to make work Vonage work with the best voice quality ( this assumes you are not using the computer at the same time)

In order to be able to use vonage and a computer I would recommend as a mininum 256kbps (UPLOAD) ( Remember, this is base on the best voice quailty )

You can set your Vonage box to use less bandwith to a minimum of about 64kbps UPLOAD

You have to keep in mind that the speeds that you are given by any provider in Colombia are never guaranteed; so should buy at least double what you need.

These recommendations are base on my experience for the last 3 years using VoIP in Colombia. I currently run a VoIP PBX in my house with several remote extensions in Barranquilla, Bogota and Santa Marta so I have some experience with VoIP.

Another thing with makes a big difference with VoIP is the router that the Internet Provider gives you. I personally changed it with my own.

Have UNE 1MB Cable connection and my Vonage works great....One thing you have to remember in Colombia...If it says 1MB that means speed within the colombian internet .co and connecting to international websites or servers has been terrible at times..but has been improving...If the international connection goes down than Vonage goes down....Also drop the speed alittle when connecting to international servers... The 2MB 3MB and 4MB service in Medellin to rich for my blood..
