High Def Programming in Medellin

Is high def programming available yet? EPM / Cable Pacifico told me 3 months ago coming soon but nothing specific, what about Direct TV?

No colombian stations broadcast in HD, so I don't know what channels they'd even offer. None of the ESPN latin america's etc are broadcast in HD either.

I find it really funny when I see friends in Colombia with plasmas (which suck btw, get DLP instead) watching all the 4:3 programs stretched out so they don't burn the bars into their TVs.

Are Blu-Ray discs available in other parts of South America? The issue with that might be that the studios may not be producing a significant amount of Blu-Ray with the proper region ID and Latin American packaging.

Well if you buy your player (or playstation 3) in the states the discs from the states should work fine. Another option that will be available will be with Netflix you can download the highdef movies to your PC and then watch them on your TV connected. My new HP laptop has a HDMI connection which I can connect to my TV for Hi-Def. The issue is the internet connection has to be bloody fast!

BTW, Tigerdirect has Toshiba HD-DVD players with 5 HD-DVDs for $99. This player can double as a upconvert DVD player with traditional (non HD-DVD) discs.

Wow, in the states DirectTV is offering maybe 100 channels. Its amazing watching the weather channel in hi def (grin). On many of the channels they just put bars on the left and right sides of the screen that say CNN HD sideways (grin).

Maybe 60 or so are really in 1080i/760p - but then you get the choice of maybe a hundred sporting events on PPV or with the various sports packages that are hi-def.

Can you download movies in high def and then burn them onto a disk?

ColombianoGringo says on Mar 8, 2008, 15:57:

What kind of disc? I suppose you could burn a blu ray disc, but you would need software to encode it correctly. It really depends on what types of files you would be downloading from the internet(what format, codec?). If you have a PS3, you can just copy the files onto the hard drive and play them that way.

If you have some more specific questions, I can ask the video engineer at my office.

Yes - in theory this would be possible to download in hi-def and burn in blue-ray - or play as a file from the PS3.. Larry

Blu-ray discs are about 25 bucks. Theres a cheaper way to download hi-def movies to your computer and play them on your HD TV.

It depends on your TV, your video card and the video file you want to play. For example, I have a Samsung DLP TV that happens to have a PC input. I simply plugged a PC into the TV and my video card displays in 1080p. I videos in Windows Media Player or some other video software that plays full screen. Depending on the resolution of the video and compression, you will get varying results.

SInce many TVs don't have a VGA plug, you will need a video card that supports HDMI, DVI or Component HD video depending on the inputs on your TV. One thing to keep in mind is that plasma and CRT hi-def TVs can easily burn in a Windows or Mac desktop. With DLP, this is not a problem as they are impossible to burn in. I often leave my TV on with a Windows desktop up for hours with no problems. I'm not sure how well LCD TVs handle burn in.

I have a Sony LCD that has VGA in and two HDMI ins as well as the usual component and S video crap. I use it as my computer monitor using the HDMI from my video card. Where can I download a hi def movie? I doubt Colombia will offer regular hi def programming any time soon. Unless TelMex Slim does it inciting competition. But probably not a demand as who has HiDef sets here?
