Hey, need some help, fellow colombian bilinguals!!, please read...

Well, I have an Aunt, and she is in Narino. She has three kids. She needs to get passports, for herself and her children and she has no inkling of how much they cost, where to go, and if she can do it from say, Samaniego, thats south of Pasto. She would have to travel a good six hours to Pasto, JUST to figure that stuff out.

She is currently an Elementary school teacher, a government job, so she says, their really tough about giving days off, and what not, so she says she literally cant lose any days of work. So I'd lik to save her as much hassle as possible. I checked the colombian Embassy, online and it's site is under construction -(the one in Washington DC)or something. I can go to the Embassy here in L.A., but I'm trying to get myself a few steps ahead, it's night time right now, and the L.A. embassy, doesn't seem to have a website. I'll have to drive down there, but maybe some of you know or have dealt with this. I'm assuming getting colombian passports, is a routine procedure, no matter what DEPARTAMENTO/State your in the republic, right?.

Any of you guys, can shoot some info over my way?. She submitted her paperwork, for U.S. Residence, about 20 years ago....and INS has finally responded, and we have the affidavit of support, the money, but she just built her home, when she submitted for U.S. residency, through my mom, whose a U.S. Citizen, she had no kids. NOW she has three...lol..but yeah, no worries, they all come in as residents automatically, it's pretty cool. Anyhow, please , give me stats on getting passports, if your a regular Colombian citizen, and wants to get his passports, whats the basic protocol, and cost...and wait time?...

Much peace, and love.

if you can, please respond to :

The passport process is pretty easy in Colombia. She can get it done in Bogota on the day she applies. Outside of Bogota, I assume she will have to go to a DAS office. She will probably have to wait 2 to 4 weeks to receive the passports. It might be worth a trip to Bogota for her. As a teacher, she has a bunch of days off - but those days are also the days all government services are probably closed.

20 years - Christ. I knew it took a long time. God bless you guys and good luck.

Passports are issued at the Gobernacion of the Departmento, in her case, in Pasto. Cost approximately 100.000 pesos, usually the same day.

You need to to check the MRE web site. There are only limited visas that would work:

QUALIFIED RESIDENT: This visa can be acquired by a foreigner that had temporary visa for a CONTINUOUS PERIOD of 5 years. Persons that have Temporary spouse visa, Temporary for parents of a Colombian citizen, may apply for resident visa in a period of 3 continuous years.

RESIDENT INVESTOR: This visa can by requested by a foreigner that invest in his name, as established by law and decree not be less than $100,000 (one hundred thousand dollars) and the funds must be registered in the Bank of the Republic.

TEMPORAL VISA FOR SPOUSE OF COLOMBIAN NATIONALS: When a foreigner marries a Colombian citizen, or it fills the requirements as a permanent companion, they may apply for this type of visa. It is valid for 2 years and can be renewed after that for another year. After the three years you are eligible for residency.

They can process the passport in one day. Keep in mind that they do not let you in the building if you are wearing shorts. Since she is not a gringa, she will not make that mistake (as I did). The longest wait, is at the line up at the bank to pay the passport fees.
