The Basic rules are to search the site for previous posts that cover the topic from every direction...Can't find it....look at the top right hand corner of this page. Hope this helps

Basic Rules I am not sure where you are living but you don't need to know too much, most of the people in Colombia adores foreigners and they will be able to help you with whatever you need.

Just try to be away from unsafe places... you need to ask before going anywhere. In Bogota like in any big city there are thiefs, so be carefull with your wallet.

If you are going to Bogota and you like to do turistic stuff, you need to go to Monserrate (the restaurant there is fabulus, very romantic at night), the gold museum and the Salt Cathedral. And if you like to party you can't miss Chia, Parque de la 93 and La Zona Rosa. Plenty of places to visit.

If you have any specific question, let me know... I will be able to help you.

Bad Advice... since you are seeking RESIDENCY not tourist information. Contact the embassy or nearest consulate. It will be harder than you think.

Also Google search this site-see upper right of page

Gator, you are right... I guess the first question would be where are you planning to live? and then we would be able to give you better orientation...

robert555 Residency can take 2 plus years, you will need to tell us more information about yourself, like are you married to a Colombian.

Residency It doesn't take 2 years to get your residency. You have to be a resident in Colombia 2 years married to a Colombian woman to be a citizen. I don't know how long you have to have your residency in Colombia without being married to be a citizen.

Gator says on Monday September 5th, 2005 6:45:

mikecolombia is close but... you must first be in Colombia on a "spouse" visa for a MINIMUM of THREE years (confusion may have come because the TC Visa will " expire" after two years and must be renewed for another year-easy to do). After that three-year time you are eligible to make application to become a Permanant resident-not a citizen. Having the TC visa reduces the wait to become a permanant resident from five to three years.

Here are a couple of web sites that may help (in Spanish, of course.)

www.infomigrante.org
or
www.minrelext.gov.co (Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Colombia )
or
http://www.gobiernoenlinea.gov.co/extranjeros/default.asp?catide=2002

BTW: If you plan on working after marriage and moving to Colombian there is a LOT more paperwork that must be done-much of it before you leave the states.

Residency is five years, with a business visa.

Thanks Gator, I thought it was three year wait if you were married to a Colombian for residency purposes, but I have been hearing from a few people that it was only two years. Seeing as I won't get married, I have never looked into the marriage residency side of things in the official channels.

By the way Gator, give my regards to Scott, presuming you meet him in Bogota.

Any new rules Gator, any new laws about renewing a spouse visa without having to travel to Bogota. Living on the coast, it's a pain in the ass to have to fly to Bogota just to renew the document. I was hoping maybe they had/were going to change the process so you could renew at your LOCAL DAS office.

I know, wishful thinking hahaha

Amigo, Enjoy Bogotá. I think you will have to visit the friendly city of Bogotá-for a different answer see you local DAS office and if that doesn't work visit another city and try that DAS answer. Seriously, as far as I know it is Bogotá (99% sure).

Residency After talking to a couple of friends, you may be able to get residency on an INVESTMENT visa straight away, which invlolves investing US$ 100,000 or more.

I will update the board when I get more information.

Here are a couple of sites which may help http://www.coinvertir.org/html/i_portals/index.php

Minimum investment is $100.000 USD
Bright point-this can be an investment in REAL ESTATE (i.e. a
apartmento.
Pain in the Ass Points. 1. Lots of paper work. 2. Getting the $$$
to Colombia. 3. Opening a bank account.(I suggest you take a look
citibank for you international banking)

Suggestion. Find the closet Colombian Consulate (Houston and/or Miami
or the most help full) and make the trip to begin the paperwork).
Visa cost is around, I think, $350 USD.

Good luck.

Good luck.
