I couldn't find a place to exchange them, and they were in US dollars. Money exchange businesses MIGHT be able to do it? There are usually a couple in any major mall.

Forget about using your Australian Travelers Cheques anywhere in Colombia. Even if you got lucky and found someone to cash them you're going to get hosed so badly on the exchange that your entire budget will be shot. You might as well burn the money.

Don't you have a credit or debit card on you?

if you're in medallo, go to bancolombia in oviedo, and ask for jimmy abdula. he's an old friend and might be able to council/direct you. good luck. i hate travellers checks. in all my work abroad over the years, only once did i take amr. express checks. that was the end of that. after, i always carried up to five grand in cash and any needs in excess were dealt with by bank transfers. what money buyer wants to f**k with travelers checks.

money exchangers and the general public want them ole wrinkeled twenties...it's the story of that old filthy lucre, all over again...deja vue

AUSTRALIAN ??????????? Bad enough to deal with AMEX in US Dollars. If you have to cash an AMEX travelers check try an American Express Travel Service location. My daughter was able to get pesos with USD checks at both the Bogotá on Cr 6 downtown and Cartagena location, in Bocagrande on 4 and 7/8. Not too much hassles just the daughter's passport and my and Mrs. Gator's cédula was all that was need.

The exchange rate would have made the Mafia blush. In my experience, traveler's checks are obsolete and unnecessary with the advent of the ATM.

I made the same mistake 20 years ago in Ecuador. As Gator said, an AMEX service location was the only place that exchanged them for me. Could not tell you where such a location is in Colombia though. If you brought your atm card or your visa, use it instead.
