He says it won`t matter!, his California driver licence is expired and he and some friends want to fly to New York for the ceremony of 911, they are leaving tonight and coming back wed. I think this is CRAZY, but he insist that as long as you have and ID with your name and picture even if it is expired is okay.
IS HE MISS INFORMED?
Thank you in advance.

mrgizmo says on Sep 10, 2007, 10:42: Very simple, just call the airline and find out about their policy. I have a friend who was able to fly to Mexico city two weeks ago with an expired U.S. passport but with the stipulation that she was supposed to renew it in Mexico City. So on domestic flights your son might be right but again just call the airline just to be sure. Behind every successful man, there's a nagging woman |

RAAAY says on Sep 10, 2007, 10:43: If it is out of date ...............it is NOT a valid I.D................and indeed could be prevented from getting on a plane either leaving or returning.......... .........Its useless to argue with ignorance |

Lisa Zee says on Sep 10, 2007, 10:49: Thanks guys. I am so afraid that he could get stuck in N.Y. I think this is the worst time to travel on 9-11!. Young people think they are invincible and they know it all!
|
|
RAAAY says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:15: Maybe it would be a good thing if he was stuck in NY for a while..................he might learn a few things............. .........Its useless to argue with ignorance |

Mr. Hollywood says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:17: Lisa, you can even fly with NO ID still. It just means they'll give you a hell of a time in secondary inspection.
|

RAAAY says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:25: I imagine he should not have trouble with the expired ID..........depends on the person doing the checking.......but probably should be ok................. .........Its useless to argue with ignorance |

RussianFred says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:34: I travel with an expired DL once. They just stated that my id was expired and that i should update my DL when i got home. Maybe he should carry his a school id also. I think it would pend on the agent. The airlines have a general policy that you need a valid state or federal id. El Piloto says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:37: Mr. Hollywood is right. For domestic travel you can fly without any ID at all. You will be secondaried by TSA and might encounter some resistance from airline check-in staff too, but as long as you allow sufficient time to go through these hassles and hurdles you CAN fly without ID.

RAAAY says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:46: F# at kin amazing................I find that extraordinary that five years after 9/11 someone could fly without ID............ .........Its useless to argue with ignorance |
|
El Piloto says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:48: Why is that extraordinary and/or amazing? ID does not equal security.
|
|
Lisa Zee says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:50: He probably have a back pack only. He says he has study the situation. He also says that they want a picture ID, and" what? because it is expire it means I am not that person?" (that is what he argues, and he tells me to leave him alone!). I say I will tell him the same when he is arrested!.
|
|
El Piloto says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:59: Don't worry Lisa Zee. He won't be arrested. Just tell him to arrive at the airport with tons of extra time, explain to the airline what happened, and be prepared for a full secondary search by TSA. The following blog link is kind of interesting re: flying without ID.

Lisa Zee says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:59: Yes Rayyy, I agree. After 9-11 everyone is very suspicious of any little move. Not even in Colombia, that is a `real free 'country, you could get away with an expired ID.

Mr. Hollywood says on Sep 10, 2007, 12:44: Lisa, I'd also urge your kid to travel with a second or third type of "unofficial" id like a credit card with his name, a student ID card, etc.

Gator says on Sep 10, 2007, 13:06: Even if expired it will be accepted but he may also be pulled out of line subjected to a "secondary" inspection. "Brevior Sltare Cum Deformibus Mulieribus Est Vita!" . |

tampavallenato says on Sep 10, 2007, 14:26: How about you renew it online . I know here in Florida you can renew your Drivers license online but dont know about Ca. tho. they mostly want the money and if you got a credit card you can renew it. Ay Hombe!!! |
|
Mr. Hollywood says on Sep 10, 2007, 15:30: Tinto, thanks for that article. I agree very much that most of what passes for "security" is just "security theater."

RussianFred says on Sep 10, 2007, 15:39: Mr. Hollywood is right on target. Why can't we use someone else ticket? As American we lost alot of rights since 911. We need a class action lawsuit against the airline industry. The ID thing is bull. Terrorist can buy fake ids. It's all to give us a false sense of security. Man Tequila says on Sep 10, 2007, 17:36: I don't think airlines necessarily like ID checks and long hassles at customs. It upsets people who blame the airline for things out of their control. They probably have to charge more to cover the cost of additional taxes. It makes folks miss connections. Hmmm, maybe these days airlines do like these things? They certainly like people carrying fewer bags and being more reluctant to mouth off. pues se me antoja que sus cantares son de una tierra desconocida, y yo le dije si a usted le inspira, saber la tierra de donde soy... con mucho gusto y a mucho honor... |

Mr. Hollywood says on Sep 10, 2007, 18:58: Airlines care about things like fuel prices and air traffic control delays. They really could give a shit about your experience before and after you're on the plane, unless you're a 200,000 mile per year 1st class flyer.

Tinto (Moderator) says on Sep 11, 2007, 16:42: You might be right about nothing higher than 50% alcohol / 100 proof being sold in duty free shops. I haven't looked for it but I do have fond memories of burning things with Bacardi 151.

Robert Jorge says on Sep 11, 2007, 20:55: Yep, I saw the "FIREBALL - FIREBALL" scene in the movie, Revenge of the Nerds. Of course I thought the logical thing to do was to get some Everclear and try it out myself. Ah, the memories of my teen-age years.

john_stark says on Sep 11, 2007, 22:37: The freedom that I do love about Colombia is the freedom to unleash unholy torrents of violence. You gotta love a country where you can have somebody killed for $50. Damm, a couple of hundred bucks and you can have everybody who is pissing you off whacked. If your sicario is a bad shot and kills somebody else, it'll just be said that it was an accident.
