Help please, my son wants to fly to N.Y. with expire ID!?

He says it won`t matter!, his California driver licence is expired and he and some friends want to fly to New York for the ceremony of 911, they are leaving tonight and coming back wed. I think this is CRAZY, but he insist that as long as you have and ID with your name and picture even if it is expired is okay.
IS HE MISS INFORMED?

Thank you in advance.

Very simple, just call the airline and find out about their policy. I have a friend who was able to fly to Mexico city two weeks ago with an expired U.S. passport but with the stipulation that she was supposed to renew it in Mexico City. So on domestic flights your son might be right but again just call the airline just to be sure.

If it is out of date ...............it is NOT a valid I.D................and indeed could be prevented from getting on a plane either leaving or returning..........

However...........they are mostly checking the I.D. to make sure the picture matches the person..............it would need to be a fairly observant TSA agent to pick up on this.........and ......well................that's the chance you take.

.........Its useless to argue with ignorance

Lisa Zee says on Sep 10, 2007, 10:49:

Thanks guys. I am so afraid that he could get stuck in N.Y. I think this is the worst time to travel on 9-11!. Young people think they are invincible and they know it all!
He says people fly with a Costco card!?

RAAAY says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:15:

Maybe it would be a good thing if he was stuck in NY for a while..................he might learn a few things.............

.........Its useless to argue with ignorance

Mr. Hollywood says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:17:

Lisa, you can even fly with NO ID still. It just means they'll give you a hell of a time in secondary inspection.

I doubt he'll have trouble with the ID.

I flew into NYC on a redeye last year on the night of Sept 10th/Morning of Sept 11th. Interestingly, I was the first passenger to board, at least officially, but when I got on the plane there were at least 6 men already seated, including my seatmate who told me he was a "retired college professor". He had a "guitar case" in the overhead bin. While I put on my eyeshade and popped a sleeping pill he asked the flight attendant for a big cup of coffee and apparently stayed up all night.

So I slept pretty well, knowing an air marshall was sitting next to me.

RAAAY says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:25:

I imagine he should not have trouble with the expired ID..........depends on the person doing the checking.......but probably should be ok.................

But.......NO id...................shit.......I'd be surprised that the TSA are that bad................Apart from the airline people checking the ID.........which is hit and miss........but then the TSA agent before you go through the screening...........they insist on the ID and check it against the name on the boarding pass....................I'd be really surprised if you could get away with this...................

.........Its useless to argue with ignorance

I travel with an expired DL once. They just stated that my id was expired and that i should update my DL when i got home. Maybe he should carry his a school id also. I think it would pend on the agent. The airlines have a general policy that you need a valid state or federal id.
Good luck!

El Piloto says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:37:

Mr. Hollywood is right. For domestic travel you can fly without any ID at all. You will be secondaried by TSA and might encounter some resistance from airline check-in staff too, but as long as you allow sufficient time to go through these hassles and hurdles you CAN fly without ID.

RAAAY says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:46:

F# at kin amazing................I find that extraordinary that five years after 9/11 someone could fly without ID............

.........Its useless to argue with ignorance

El Piloto says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:48:

Why is that extraordinary and/or amazing? ID does not equal security.

Lisa Zee says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:50:

He probably have a back pack only. He says he has study the situation. He also says that they want a picture ID, and" what? because it is expire it means I am not that person?" (that is what he argues, and he tells me to leave him alone!). I say I will tell him the same when he is arrested!.
I am so, very worried, out of my mind!

El Piloto says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:59:

Don't worry Lisa Zee. He won't be arrested. Just tell him to arrive at the airport with tons of extra time, explain to the airline what happened, and be prepared for a full secondary search by TSA. The following blog link is kind of interesting re: flying without ID.

Lisa Zee says on Sep 10, 2007, 11:59:

Yes Rayyy, I agree. After 9-11 everyone is very suspicious of any little move. Not even in Colombia, that is a `real free 'country, you could get away with an expired ID.
They are going to think my son is a terrorist, that how come he has a expire ID. I hope I am not over reacting.

Lisa Zee says on Sep 10, 2007, 12:08:

Thank you El Piloto, I will print it for him.

Mr. Hollywood says on Sep 10, 2007, 12:44:

Lisa, I'd also urge your kid to travel with a second or third type of "unofficial" id like a credit card with his name, a student ID card, etc.

Gator says on Sep 10, 2007, 13:06:

Even if expired it will be accepted but he may also be pulled out of line subjected to a "secondary" inspection.

If you cannot understand why I would be amazed that one can fly nowadays without I.D........
Why do you think they ask for I.D at all ?
Surely it is an integral part of security........no..?

.........Its useless to argue with ignorance

Mr. Hollywood says on Sep 10, 2007, 13:41:

Hah! They ask for ID because the Dept of Homeland Security wants to create the perception that they're busy keeping Americans safe.

Checking ID is one of those things that only matters for people who are honest already. Do you REALLY think that if the 9/11 hijackers needed to get some fake ids in order to get on a plane that would have stopped them?

Put another way: There is NO national ID in the US, unlike Colombia or most other countries. So instead as a "Standard ID" we've got 50 different forms of driver's license or state id. Do you really think that TSA or airline employees in Miami or Boston know what a genuine Alaska or Oklahoma id looks like? As long as the name and the picture match you're going right on in.

Tinto (Moderator) says on Sep 10, 2007, 13:47:

It's all about "security theater" according to the article below.

http://citypages.com/databank/28/1394/article15776.asp

An example not mentioned in the article: I buy a big heavy glass bottle of liquor in the duty free shop. I break it on the metal chair frame inside the plane. I've now got a heck of a dangerous weapon and maybe flammable alcohol to boot.

RAAAY says on Sep 10, 2007, 14:02:

Mr. Hollywood says on Monday September 10th, 2007 13:41:
......".As long as the name and the picture match you're going right on in."

That's exactly what I said.

The fact is the US in general is a joke when it comes to security. This could be because their experience of terrorism at home is a relatively recent thing. Spend some time in Israel or Northern Ireland and there you will experience what real security measures are like. In these places they have been dealing with terrorism for many many years.

When a security agent at Belfast or Tel Aviv airport asks you for your I.D. they are not doing so just to check that the name matches everything else. When they look at the picture and then at you..........they are gauging your reaction.....your body language.......they are trained like sniffer dogs to detect the slightest change in your demeanor.

Unfortunately security personnel in the States have'nt gotten to that level yet...........which is one reason why this lady's son will have no problems on his trip.

tampavallenato says on Sep 10, 2007, 14:26:

How about you renew it online . I know here in Florida you can renew your Drivers license online but dont know about Ca. tho. they mostly want the money and if you got a credit card you can renew it.

Ay Hombe!!!

Mr. Hollywood says on Sep 10, 2007, 15:30:

Tinto, thanks for that article. I agree very much that most of what passes for "security" is just "security theater."

A classic Colombian case is the guy in the wheelchair a couple years ago who was waived AROUND the security gate with his hand grenades. Of COURSE a paralyzed guy couldn't ever hijack an airplane, right?

Personally, I've always thought that the push for ID checks came from the airlines, who obviously don't like the idea of tickets being easily resold or transferred. If you make it impossible to travel on the ticket unless it's your name, you reduce a lot of resales of return legs, etc.

RussianFred says on Sep 10, 2007, 15:39:

Mr. Hollywood is right on target. Why can't we use someone else ticket? As American we lost alot of rights since 911. We need a class action lawsuit against the airline industry. The ID thing is bull. Terrorist can buy fake ids. It's all to give us a false sense of security.

Man Tequila says on Sep 10, 2007, 17:36:

I don't think airlines necessarily like ID checks and long hassles at customs. It upsets people who blame the airline for things out of their control. They probably have to charge more to cover the cost of additional taxes. It makes folks miss connections. Hmmm, maybe these days airlines do like these things? They certainly like people carrying fewer bags and being more reluctant to mouth off.

Mr. Hollywood says on Sep 10, 2007, 18:58:

Airlines care about things like fuel prices and air traffic control delays. They really could give a shit about your experience before and after you're on the plane, unless you're a 200,000 mile per year 1st class flyer.

Robert Jorge says on Sep 10, 2007, 20:45:

I don't feel more secure if TSA checks ID. As long as they find the stick of dynamite someone stuck up their ass, or the souvenir baseball that is actually a grenade.

And about the flammable booze bought duty free. Great point about being able to break the bottle and have a weapon. But the flammable liquid is a stretch. The liquor has to be roughly 50% alc vol to light up. 101 proof Wild Turkey will light, but it is very weak. That is the only 100 proof plus liquor I have seen in duty free shops - unless I missed the Bacardi 151.

Tinto (Moderator) says on Sep 11, 2007, 16:42:

You might be right about nothing higher than 50% alcohol / 100 proof being sold in duty free shops. I haven't looked for it but I do have fond memories of burning things with Bacardi 151.

Robert Jorge says on Sep 11, 2007, 20:55:

Yep, I saw the "FIREBALL - FIREBALL" scene in the movie, Revenge of the Nerds. Of course I thought the logical thing to do was to get some Everclear and try it out myself. Ah, the memories of my teen-age years.

Tank you TINTO, for the web site, I printed that letter and gave it to him to take. I hope he does not have any trouble coming back.

Are we getting off topic?

john_stark says on Sep 11, 2007, 22:37:

The freedom that I do love about Colombia is the freedom to unleash unholy torrents of violence. You gotta love a country where you can have somebody killed for $50. Damm, a couple of hundred bucks and you can have everybody who is pissing you off whacked. If your sicario is a bad shot and kills somebody else, it'll just be said that it was an accident.

If you see some hot babe and you lose control you can blame it all on the brujeria she was putting on you and point to the pubic hair that you got stuck between your teeth while drinking your coffee.

None of this SPCA crap either - Colombia is a country where you have the freedom to see animals fight and kill - bullfighting, cockfighting, dogfighting - all popular sports where a man can enjoy himself.

Yeah, baby, that's freedom.
