Help, new to colombia!!!!

I am coming to study at Javeriana in July and I was wonderinf if anyone can tell me how much it costs for housing in Bogota. What is the average price for a room with a house family? Also I was wondering what you need to open a bank account in Colombia. I will only be living there for 5 months. I hope someone can help me, Thanks:)

RE: Help You will need a student visa. The university will require you to have health insurance and you will need proof of financial resources. After you have obtained a student visa you can open a bank account.

I am wondering? Do you know anyone in Colombia or did you decide one day just to go to school in Bogota? I am not trying to be rude. The questions you have asked are very simple to answer with a little research in Bogota.

Yes I do I am not sure if you are saying to go to another country that I need to know someone there, if that was the case then i don't think people would travel would they? But yes I do, my boyfriend is Colombian and his father lives in Bogota.

I just wanted to talk to some people on here because I have never been to Colombia. My boyfriend has not lived in Colombia since he was a child, so he can not help me with these questions. But for me the question is not simple because I do not know. I was just looking for some friendly advice.

Banking question Hey Colleen,

I've just recently moved to Bogota and am happy to answer any questions I can about the process. If you're coming from the USA the price of housing and cost of living will be considerably cheaper than what you're used to. I can't tell you what it costs to stay with a family but I'm sure the University can. Why, my I ask, do you want a Colombian bank account if you're only staying 5 months? In the age of internet banking and ATMs on every street corner there's little reason to have one.

Tarig Good luck, but do your own research. Even though I live in Colombia and history is like a hobby and after two college courses in Colombian Colonial History I have only scratched te surface.

To sum it up, paraprasing another historical figure, "They came; they saw and they conquered."

Are you late in turning in that term paper?

I'm an American student in Colombia too Hello Colleen,

So I assume you are fluent in Spanish? I was considering La Javeriana but the best university in Colombia is Los Andes in the centro. For business la Javeriana is super cheap 3,500,000 pesos at Los Andes it is 7,200,000, but the teachers at Los Andes most are educated in the States I met professors educated from Harvard, Stanford, Yale, and my university UC Berkeley. It is nice and smaller than La Javeriana. Have you visited the campus?

One thing that was suprising to me was to get to what they call the polio-deportivo you have togo to the 3rd floor of one building cross go into the hospital to the like 8th floor then cross a halway and take another elevator cross through the parking garage and there you are there.

If you want to know anything about La Javeriana ask I was there just 2 weeks ago I have all the class outline for business and everything. There is a ton a burocracy in La Javeriana they want to make you wait for everything you have to be agressive for everything or they will walk all over you, but this is a colombian thing. The Javeriana is on the septima and there are just old busses. You have to get off the bus and go under these tunnels to cross the street to the university if you come from the centro of the south, this was tricky for me. At los Andes you can take the new busses the transmelenio and it is quick.

Don't let them rip you off when you go to find a place to stay. I am going to buy an apartment because it is only 30K. Rent there is cheap and it depends on the area. A normal price for a 3 bedroom apartment is around 350,000 pesos for an ok place. Don't let them charge you like 750,000 like they did to another exchange student from Holand I meet 3 weeks ago as La Javeriana.

Don't open a Colombian bank account I dont even think you can because you not Colombian. Use your checkcard from the states. The best bank in Bancolombia they let you withdrall 400,000 colombian pesos around 160.00 at a time and you normally can only withdrawl 2 times a day. But if you go into the bank in person you can ask for an advance off your checkcard and withdrall 1,000,000 or 2,000,000.

If you need anny advice or other questions write. I really would like to know some actually American in Colombia you will know what I mean when you get there.

Thake it easy,

Pete

Hi Pete,
I'm going to spend about 6 weeks in Bogota this summer doing some research in economic development. I'd love to speak with some professors at local universities, but I don't know if school will be in session, if I can get on campus, who studies what where, you get the picture. Do you suppose I could just roll over to Los Andes and start chatting up some professors? Drop me a line at goldentoes3 at hotmail.com, I'd like to hear more about your experience being a student in Bogota.
Peace,
Brian
