Helmets

Is it true that you cant ride on a motorbike with a helmet? i never saw anyone wearing one and i remeber my mum mentioning dat it was to do with hitmen, and that helmets would disguise the persons face or something like that....

What part of Colombia were you in Veronica?

I saw plenty of people wearing helmets in Bogotá but they were of the type that doesn't cover the face.

I remember reading about what you are talking about as well as not having two people on a moto.

I didn't see two people on a moto in Bogotá, but it was the norm in Cartagena, in fact I think they use them (motos, and mopeds) for taxis.

San Andres doesn't count as that isn't really like Colombia at all.

I'm not an English teacher and most people know how to spell by grade school but if you're that defensive about someone else's spelling, you can go out during recess and play hide and go fuck yourself.

P.S. That would be "...fucking English teacher" with a capital e by the way.

no helmets used to be the law in medellin... because of the use of motos by sicarios. if it still is, i don't know.

you can avoid the vulgar posts/attacks above by just writing your questions with out the disses and dats.

In an article in BIKE magazine a few months ago - one of their journalists flew in to Bogota and rode out of Colombia - he was wearing an open faced MOMO helmet, but made no reference to a full faced helmet ban, if there was one i'm sure it would have been mentioned.

well i was in Boyaca when i heard about the helmet thing, and it seemed like a bit of a crazy idea. i actually witnessed a girl fall off the back of a motorbike and crack her head open.

Veronica, I noticed that not only were riders of motos in Bogotá wearing helmets, they also were wearing reflective vests. Come to think of it even cyclists were wearing helmets (not all).

Where I live in the US if you ride a motorcycle you do not need to wear a helmet or even carry personal injury insurance. It is a strange country sometimes, it is the law to wear seatbelts but you don't have to wear a motorcycle helmet. You can't wear a thong bikini on the beach but you can drive on the beach.

Veronica22 says on May 26, 2005, 04:33:

that is mad! In the U.K it is the law to wear a helmet, even if you are on a bicycle!!! its the same for seatbelts as well. if you dont wear them you get fined, or worse...arrested.

Veronica....I believe that this is no longer the case...people are now obliged to wear helmets...however once upon a time (late 80's early 90's) when Medellin was run by Pablo Escobar, he put a bounty on all cops...(you can imagine how many dead cops turned up)...in an effort to minimize the damage helmets were banned....I do believe that this is no longer the case, but in major cities 2 men on a bike is a no no.....
Hope that helps ;-)

i thinki should just stay away from motorbikes altogether. they look like death traps and i dont think i would enjoy getting a mouthful of fumes from the back of a bus.

Sorry Veronica but it's not the law to wear a helmet on a bicycle in UK. It is against the law to ride one on the pavement though

The reflective vests the moto riders wear have the bike reg on so do some peoples helmets. Probably to make it easier for the police.

BlondeJamesBond says on May 26, 2005, 04:45:

Fosth I don't know what the law is here regarding cyclists but motorbikers definetly have to wear a helmet by law.

When I passed my motorbike test I was told I would get points on my license for riding with my helmet strap undone, let alone riding without a helmet - the police here pull you over and give you a lecture for riding with your jeans on

yeah back in the day when i had to do my bicycle test (i was only 10 for gods sake!!) i had to wear a helmet and the person who taught us said that you have to wear a helmet IF you go out on the road. And as for driving on pavements, well...

kernow62 says on May 26, 2005, 05:08:

BlondJamesBond you are correct!!

On all journeys, the rider and pillion passenger on a motorcycle, scooter or moped MUST wear a protective helmet. Helmets MUST comply with the Regulations and they MUST be fastened securely. It is also advisable to wear eye protectors, which MUST comply with the Regulations. Consider wearing ear protection. Strong boots, gloves and suitable clothing may help to protect you if you fall off.
Laws RTA 1988 sects 16 &17 & MC(PH)R as amended reg 4, & RTA sect 18 & MC(EP)R as amended reg 4

It is also the law in the UK that all scooters must be equipped with 40 mirrors to give a full field of vision (TO THE REAR).

This does not apply to bicycles thankfully. ;-)

Those mirrors wouldn't make the blindest bit of difference to your fearless London scooter rider - it seems they all suffer from tunnel vision and a 'mirrors are for wimps' attitude!

but you probably couldnt even see in front of cos of all the mirrors.
its true about the Londoners; they all speed up and go tearing down the road with no idea where they are going.

I remember my cycling profeciency teacher saying i had to wear a helemt but they also suggested having a spacer on the side and a giant flag sticking up off the back!!!

Yes I remember that spacer and flag too!

The safety aspect on the road would have been erased a hundred times over by the danger of the beating you would take for looking such a tart!

About the same time though i used to attach a piece of card to my rear fork with a clothes peg so that the card used to make a sound in the wheel similar to a motorbike. Well so i thought!!

here everybody has to wear helmets, on a motorbike OR a bicycle. Almost nobody on bicycles does though, including me. I think it's overkill, and I've been in 2 accidents already. Riding a motorcycle is a different story because of how fast you can go on those things.

If you hit the back of a bus at 25 mph on a bike it will definetly help to wear a helmet. I wear one in Florida, but it is a pain because of the heat, in Bogotá the heat wouldn't be a problem. I was running from a deer fly here and ran into a log that launched me headlong into a tree, I believe the helmet saved me from serious injury. I saved the helmet to remind me, it looked like a cracked egg.

Helmuts in Colombia Veronica - I live part of the year in Cali. In Cali, I seldom saw a motorcycle/passenger or bicycle rider without a helmet. There are many people riding motorcycles as transportation. Generally when I saw people on bicycles they were in groups. It seemed that biking in Cali was quite the rage as the bikes were generally expensive and the bikers wore expensive clothing designed for biking.

As an avid bike rider, I always wear a helmet here in the states, because most morons give us no right of way. I am also considering taking my helmet to Barranquilla on my next trip for walking four blocks to Olimpica, because being a pedestrian in La Curramba is almost a blood sport.

"Suggestion - Why not go jack off in dictionary and leave everyone else alone?"

I think it should be - ...jack off in "a" dictionary.... or "the" dictionary if you have a particular one in mind for him to jack off on to.

In Medellin motorcycle helmets are law. A motorcyclist must have his license plate number on his (or her) vest, and helmet. So, the plate, vest, and helmet have to have the same plate number or the cops pull them over to figure out whos bike they have stolen.

I think in Medellin, only the drive needs to wear a helmet. I saw a man driving a bike with his wife on the back. She wasn't wearing a helmet, and neither was the 3 year old kid she was holding in her arms over the side of the seat.

In my town Wearing a helmet is compulsary and one of the few laws you ever see anyone get picked up for. I can't remember the amount of the fine but I thought it was around 40.000.

Helmets and Motorbikes Helmets and Reflective vests are mandatory in all of Colombia, some cities control it better than others do, as I recall Barranquilla was finally getting tough on the news not long ago, while in Bogota it is quite strictly enforced. The helmet and the vest are mandatory for all people on a bike and the license plate has to be on both and also reflective. Some times, usually around elections or political events, only one person is allowed per bike. But that is not a permanent measure.
