Health insurance

This might be a difficult question to answer but I figure someone has to know. So my fiance is pregnant (according to my other post some people not knowing me or girlfriend want to suggest that I get a paternity test would be a good idea suggesting the baby might not be mine which is the rudest thing you can say to someone) we starting the process before the pregnancy and it will be a real tight squeeze with her getting here before. I think that we most likely will get the k1 before but the question is with my insurance at my work it is going to be tough for me to marry her, get on the plan and wait out the waiting period for the insurance to approve it before she gives birth what are our other options? I live in San Francisco, California which has a bunch of government programs (i plan on researching them) also thinking maybe we should wait it out in Colombia and she can have the baby there with the insurance she is under. I just wanted to see what other people thought.

You have six months to use the K-1 (this is NOT the time period, 90 days, you must marry after being admitted to the USA.). That, coupled with the normal wait for the K-1 to be issued, the rational, to me anyway, would have her have the baby in Colombia. I doubt if your US insurance would cover. She will likely not be eligible for US government benefits until she receives her provisional permanent residency.

Good luck and hopefully someone else wll have ideas.

I was able to file the paperwork to add my wife onto my health ins. prior to our marriage although it was not in effect until the date of our marriage. I did have to send in a copy of our marriage certificate to validate the ins.

The only andvantage of having the child born here is the child would be a US citizen.

I wonder if the health ins. company would cover the delivery or consider it a pre-existing condition? Never know with these companies.

And my apologies njtea. I was the dick who suggested the paternity test in the older post. I am personally getting burned right now - so I can be a little harsh with my words. And several other guys here on PBH have gotten hurt real bad too. I was just trying to suggest that you be careful. But you are correct, we don't know you or your lady. Only you know what's going on.

I don't think it is possible to get insurance coverage (a US policy) for your lady in Colombia. But you certainly can get her coverage with a Colombian company. I know you said she already has coverage down there - but perhaps you could help her get a premium level of insurance down there until she is able to travel to the US. There is a lot of information here on health insurance in Colombia.

Correct ujay - but I have that wierd feeling the OP doesn't necessarily need us discussing politics, world healthcare, and that crap in this thread. Anyway, I am off to Friday's for a couple of cold beers. I'll be back later.

Ujay I never said I didn't plan on being there when my child is born if it is in Colombia or in California I plan on be there. It wasn't planned but we have been together for 3 years and for 2 1/2 years we lived together in Medellin so I know her a lot better then you do, and that is my child. I got her pregnant when I was there for 10 days visiting. But anyway thatnks for your concern but "get real" and you shouldn't make allegations when you don't know anything about us. Also I don't under the whole condom thing and living in San Francisco? What does living in SF have to do with having sex with my fiance without condoms?

For Medical Procedures in Colombia, You need to ask your US Insurance company if you or the wife are covered, as in some cases, the coverage is good for Colombia. They(US Mailhandlers insurance) paid for 75% of my Dental work in Colombia. Do you think the Bogota US Embassy workers go back to the USA every time they need medical care? Of course not, they use their US based health Insurance in Bogota. They may, like I had to, prepay their bill and have the dentist/medical provider provide Documentation of their work you can submit when when you return to the US. In my case, I received my money($1500) within 2 weeks of filing my claim. Give it a try and ask but don't assume just because its US based they won't!

Well I really don't have to worry about coverage in Colombia, she is covered and we upped the health care so she has really good insurance, the thing is if she was able to come to the states before what can I do about getting her insured here. I think the bottom line is waiting for her to have the baby in Colombia which is sad because I miss her and I want her here asap and if we have to wait thats another 3 months which doesn't sound like anything but after all the bull shit that we have been through to get her here 3 extra months will feel like a year.

I wish I had the answer for you njtea5. I just don't know anything about insurance...

I went through a nightmare getting my wife here on a K visa. My situation was quite different, but I know how hard this is on you, or I should say, I have an idea how hard this is on you to be separated from her. Good luck with everything.

Oh, and congratulations on the baby!

When the cats away the mice will play, how many guys you know play away when not at home ,I don't think women are any different than us ,and not Colombian women any way ,but it was meant generally not aimed directly at your girl.

With the baby on the way I would have thought getting married before its born would be top of list ,but then that's me

I'm reading your post and all I can see is your asking about insurance coverage (a US policy) .
As you say this k1 you need is no problem.

So its just insurance coverage (a US policy)
And I'm not too sure but knowing insurance and the health in the USA where they make money by not giving you treatment,I don't think they will give insurance to you as she is already pregnant.

That being the case ,bringing her to the USA for the birth is going to cost quite a bit .which I never understand as the UK is free ,we never have to worry about the cost .
The typical uncomplicated pregnancy runs about $14,000 in total cost.

Assuming an uncomplicated pregnancy ending in a vaginal birth, patients would pay between $1,455 and $7,884 out-of-pocket, depending on how generous the consumer-directed plan.

But a complicated birth requiring a cesarean section, early labor, or a newborn stay in a neonatal intensive care can balloon out-of-pocket costs to $8,800 for the most generous plan and a staggering $21,200 for the least generous.

"Families could be liable for $15,000, $20,000, $22,000 for the cost of care,"

And looking at this ,in the USA even with insurance coverage ,you still pay out.heath care in the USA sucks.

Private health insurers covered 87% of the expenses of insured women, who paid 8% of the remaining costs out of pocket and 5% from "other sources,"

Colombia hospitals are as good as any where, even birth at home ,

And a whole lot cheaper than the USA ,with no insurance at all here and paying private is not going to cost an arm and a leg here.like the USA.

So what I was saying and may be never came across right is...

Check ups per natal care not a lot here

Every thing goes smooth its only one day in hospital ,

She has all her family and friends here ,shes not in strange place ,be more relaxed .The only down side is your apart a bit longer.

If was me ,sort out the k1 ,they say it last 6 months ,have the baby here ,save money in the bargain

As for the condom ,you don't wont to get wet wear a jacket. As for health care in the USA ,its not the best ,even with insurance coverage ,and the cost is outrageous.so much so 50 million there have none at all.

And if I had to chose the USA or here ,even if it was free,I would have it here.

Cheers and gone

I pled the 5th.

I have to laugh at McCain saying his plan gives a $5000 Tax Credit for one year of Health insurance coverage. Here in Miami, you can hardly touch a Barebone family policy for $13,000 from Blue Cross/shield. For a healthy single, age 50, NO pre-existing conditions, you are looking at $900 monthly for a half-decent Blue Cross plan. McCain needs to provide the same kind of coverage he receives from his Government policy that we the taxpayers subdize. No money for universal coverage but he finds $2 Billion weekly for the Iraq War and $700 Billion to bail out his Wall st buddies he helped deregulate.

Although it doesn't apply to the OP others may find it useful. In my case my insurance WOULD cover my wife in Colombia. It had a default of 70 % coverage. As it turns out we never needed it.

Njtea5,

Congrats on your upcoming being a Dad role. Just one thing off the topic of insurance. Not sure what the deal is in the US as far as passports go. But in Australia a child born there can only have an Australian passport. Where as in Colombia it doesnt matter. Both of our kids have a Colombian passport and an Australian passport. You never know, sometime in the future the US might end up a dogs breakfast and that Colombian passport would be handy.

Best of luck with it
