health insurance

Any info on health insurance for travellers that's good in Colombia? I have health insurance in the US but I know of someone who was hurt in a Latin country and they had to pay by credit card immediately and was reimbursed later. I'm usually just getting by for cash.

Cost Go to

http://www.ehealthinsurance.com/ehi/index.html

Easy to get quote,, then you can check the companies listed. Pricing will show various deductables and co-pays, office visits etc.

Ask your existing company if they can provide a travel rider.

Cost will be between $100 and $200 per month. A U.S. policy will not pay, Medicare will not pay.

If you can't get on the plane,, then???? Guess that's why they call it insurance.

Get a good evac policy Forget about a local medical policy. What you want in Colombia is a good medical evacuation policy. Medical care in the big cities is great and cheap. Insurance isn't really a big issue when a doctor's visit costs less than your copay in the states. And in the event you get severely injured or come down with a brain tumor or something grave, you want to be able to get medivacked back to the states where your insurance will cover you.

BTW, check with your US insurance. Some (like Blue Shield) will reimburse you for emergency coverage incurred outside the states.

One more thing I have a good medical evac policy for my entire family that costs less than $500 a year, so an individual should be able to get something really affordable. Don't have the company name handy but PM me if you're interested.

Check with your Insurance company Call them up as some companies offer coverage in Colombia or any other country outside the US for that matter. I used my Mail Handlers Insurance from the Federal Government for all my dental work. I called them first and I prepaid and had my Colombian Dentist fill out the Insurance forms and it went through in a breeze-no problem. The Rep. for Mail Handlers( a US based health insurance) insurance explained to me that US Embassy Personnel worldwide use their various federal health care insurance plans(like 220 plans in all)the time in foreign countries to takes their children, spouses to the Doctors Offices, clinics, hospitals. What they do NOT cover is if you have to be evacuated out of the country via Air Ambulance--for this you need private insurance. Its pretty reasonable--maybe $50-$100 for your trip. Too expensive?? The downside is if you have to pay for a Private Air Ambulance back to the States--this could set you back at least $2500 up to maybe $5000-depending on the company and circumstances. It is NOT cheap!

Post Time for the U.S. state department link. Scroll down,, they will tell you about medical insurance.

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1090.html

You would be lucky to get by with $5,000 USD for air ambulance. Last known cost was $15,000 USD to get a man from Caribbean to Houston. Injured himself on a cruse ship island trip,, guess what,, the boat left w/o him. Got treatment “locally and of course couldn’t get on a normal plane. This type of accident while not common is seen quite often in the Medical Center.

It will ruin your day This number came from an administrative employee at Herman Hospital.

Read my message,, hmmmm,, Quite often means she has seen it a few times,, I suppose vrs. not seeing it at all.

I think the $50,000 plus cost quoted could be even higher if you needed serious ambulance care. I've been guilty of being there w/o insurance but,, knowing I'm tough,, I should be able to pretend to need a wheel chair,, get a walker and breeze into Houston,, or what the heck,, 2 million pesos gets you a first class funeral :)

I've now got Colombian medical insurance,, covers 5 people (the minimum amount if not a single person policy) with,, Conavali????(SP) Not there now and no card but, used a Colombian woman as primary and I'm on as dependent,,$85,000 pesos per month. Added her son and her brothers two kids,, crap,, should have held a lottery.

Yes I checked on Health Insurance there.. in Bogota. Or I should say my Dentist in North Bogota checked for me. I told her I wanted the "Best $$ could buy"--a cadillac of a policy. The prices she gave varied from $45 to $70 monthly. Here(miami) for that same policy for someone in my age bracket--the closet i could come comparitively was Blue Cross/Blue Shield and that was $800-$1000 MONTHLY. Actually the Blue Cross was not as good because it had no dental to speak of, very little for optical. Same for Medications. Her plans covered all-inclusive. She could NOT beleive the insurance costs here if a Person has to go out and buy a Individual single plan(not as a gruop or a work related plan). I know people will say $45-$70 is very costly for the average Colombian but we are not pricing for a Colombian but for a Northamerican paying with Dollars.

Pricing seems to be the same no matter who you are My novio has a Conavi policy and pays 100,000cop per month. I need to ask if it covers dental. He said you cannot get a better health care policy than that. Never pays for anything! I will be able to be added to the same policy once we are married.

Wow--that is only around $40-$50 monthly depending on the Peso exchange.I beleive this was one of the Companies my Dentist checked on for me. My price included the Dental. Of course-no plastic surgery(haha) unless it was for reconstructive type as in Cancer, accidents ect.

That's the name Conavi, that’s the name of mine. When asking about dental find out if you can’t be added now. Requires a visit and signature. Mine is a little lower in cost, maybe because of no dental or living in Rural location.

My GF could not afford the 85,000 per month. She had health care because the Hospital had doctors and facilities for anyone with a Cedula. The lines were long, probably half a day or more between signing up and seeing the doctor. Then you might need a shot so it was off to the pharmacy to get a syringe and the medicine back to the “get an injection window and another smaller wait.

After a year I asked her to check on cost of insurance. Gezzzzzz, if I’d had any idea I’d have bought it before, nice clinic with hospital beds, doctors, staffed reception area, much smaller wait, no going off to buy disposables, etc. I haven't been to the doctor in years but the clinic seemed to be equal to what I'd expect in the U.S. Plus, if they don't have some kind of equipment like, an MRI? then they schedule you into Cali.

Poco- a Miami Taxi Cab Owner who is Colombian and from Bogota related to me a few months back he went to the Clinica de Santa Fe located near the Santa Barbara Mall in North Bogota. This clinic is probably the best equipped in all of Bogota and very well known. He went for one of those very complete Physicals that included all the Lab Tests(blood) for Cholesterol,Prostate, cardiac enzymes ect plus the cardiac stress tests,EKG,scans ect. on the tread mill. He said the tests were like spread out over 3 days. The cost was something like $450; here, in a like clinic in south florida or NYC, you would be looking at a Minimum of $2500 for the same complete Physical.A simple CBC blood test Here cost a minimum of $500 ALONE, while in Bogota its more or less, around $35.

Now you know why
being in Colombia or somewhere similar is attractive. I absolutely love the rural areas and dislike the cities,, this isn’t just Colombia,, EVERYWHERE.

Came from a Rural area to the BIG U.S. city for school and work,, NEVER liked it, a necessity. Then thought about retirement back to a rural area of the U.S. things have changed,, darn,, the people are the same, but the overall conditions are DIFFERENT. Job opportunities, Medical costs, car, Insurance, taxes, transportation have placed a visible strain on the rural U.S.
