Having a baby in Colombia

Hi,

My wife and I will be moving to Bogota in about a months time so that I can open offices for my South African company there.
My wife is currently 2 months pregnant and will in all probability be having the baby in Bogota. Does anyone know how I go about getting medical cover for her - should I do it in Colombia or tey an international medical aid? What are the medical facilities like - I have only heard very good reports? My wife only speaks english - are we likely to find a mid-wife or doctor who speaks english?

Any help would be great.

We Have No.... problem with the quality of medical care here in Bogotá. Our doctor is a graduate of the U of Florida Medical College (who else would the old Gator have) and did his internship at Holy Cross Hospital in Ft.Lauderdale and his internship in Philadelphia Our insurance is with Colsantitas. You can check out their web site at:

No, the truth is we dont have any doctors or medical facilities , or hospitals or anything.... no health services... plus nobody in Colombia speaks english and they are no translators....we still live in trees and women have babies on their own in the field.. the baby just drops in the middle of the plantation.........make sure you get a doctor that studied in the states, colombian doctors can't read or write plus they were not taught in the States, which probably means that no other education system works... as i said.. no reading, no writing, they do get a lot of hands-on practice with all the dead dropping around from the violence and drugs... ......................................

Sorry, had too much to drink tonight.and feelinmg abit sarcastic You'll be fine..Colombian insurance is good and cheaper than in the states...and... Colombian women have had babies for as long as they can remember. You will find very good facilities that will tend your every need. You will have a very lucky little colombianito(a) and you will find everything you need. i recommend getting a pre-pagada like Colsanitas that is part of Sanitas International... Check out Hospitals like Clinica del Country, Fundacion santa Fe, Fundacion cardioinfantil--- all very good places.

Lucia Rojas... did you mention that the ambulance is a red and white cart pulled by a burro with a hat containing a blinking red candle.. To clear traffic they just jab a stick with an nail into his ass and the bray clears the other carts out of the way.

Thanks Many thanks Guys,

Great information - and a free dose of sarcasm from the lovely Lucia.
In South Africa we just do it at home.

jeje.. sorry again, I become very defensive here... :)
I recommend coming and getting a few pediatricians recommended by close people and then visiting all the pediatricians, choosing the one you like and then buying the pre-pagada that is used by that same doctor. This way you get a doctor that you and your wife feel comfortable with and the pre-pagada to make his consultations really cheap.
