have you visited Melgar, Colombia?

Hello There,
I'm going to Colombia next January and one of my stops is the town of Melgar. I would like to know if any of you have visited melgar before. if so, could you share your opinions (good and bad) regarding this town? Please? I would like to have information regarding, what to do over there, hotels, restaurants, safety tips.

Thanks

CAFAM/Kualamaná I've always gone to Kualamaná in the CAFAM (gated) community in Melgar. The town of Melgar itself is full of hookers and rowdy bars. Kualamaná is a wonderful resort hotel that is dirt-cheap by U.S. standards -- huge pool (with a built-in "wet" bar) poolside cafe, good restaurant and bar, miniature golf, tennis, etc. The service there is top notch. There's a small amusement park for the kiddies just down the road in CAFAM plus a supermarket, so you never have to leave CAFAM if you don't want to.

my take on Melgar I went there and stayed with some friends who lived up on a hill above the town, it was an enclosed nighbourhood for the wealthy with security ect. That little enclosed nightbourhood was very nice and every house had a pool and tennis court and all the works. The climate was hot and lovely. The town itself how ever appeared to be a bit seedy and grotty. There were a lot of night spots, i remember driving past one called The Iguana Bar, but we never needed to go out because the house had everything.

We only went to the supermarket to stock up on supplies and to the town Plaza and sat and ate an ice cream. There were loads of kids riding around on little motorized cars which was cute.

It was the same cost as Bogota, which is about 1/2 price of things in the USA.As far as accomidation goes im not sure....sorry.

I liked Villa del Layva better, its cold but it has so much character and is really colonial with cobbled streets ect, but thats just me.

I have lots of pix of Melgar I wish I had time to upload them. Unfortunately I'm on my way out the door.
I didn't find it all that seedy there, but there were lots of working girls. We went on Sunday morning and came back on Monday afternoon, and very few of the clubs were even open on Sunday night. They tell me that during vacation months (July, Dec, Jan) the place is swarming 24/7 with rowdy college students.
I have one photo of a nightclub that actually has a jacuzzi in it!
You can rent those villas with private pools etc pretty easily. I think the going rate is 30-40k per person per night or something like that. We stayed in Los Toboganes de Melgar, which is a hotel that has its own 3 little waterslides. It's 80k a night there for a room with no AC and 96k with AC. Don't be afraid to try and talk them down though.
