Have you heard of Mangostino?

Have you tried it?
The fist time I heard of Mangostino I heard it in the soap opera “Pedro el Escamoso" several years ago.
The episode when Mompirri was trying to do business with a Japanese fruit exporter. I always thought that the fruit was part of a fictional novela script.
Well, in my brief visit to Bogotá, I found the Mangostino and it’s real and it tastes pretty good!!!

Yes, it tastes great, I first tried it a month ago in Medellín.

But it is not too easy to come by and may not be as cheap as other fruits in Colombia.

Don't peel a mangostino! Just tear it apart in halves, like Monpirri's second picture shows.

The fruit of kings, or the fruit of princes, I cant remember which at the moment. Put em in the fridge to get the flesh super cold. Nice and refreshing. Other thing to be careful of is that it stains.

Mangosteen has been sold at Asian supermarkets here in Stockholm for many years now. It's originated in Far East.

Rubito, just pop off the top to peel it, then it's easy. Any other way is close to impossible.

One of my favorite tropical fruits. I love mangostino season in Colombia

Quite common here in Vancouver-especially in Asian markets.

Did you know they're banned in the USA-some pack of lies about them harbouring dangerous somethingorother.

Also there's a big movement trying to promote Mangosteen as the 'Next Big Thing', a web search will show you all kinds of wild claims about it prolonging your life, etc., etc.

' a la orden!'

Mangosteens are not banned in the USA, in fact they are grown commercially in Puerto Rico.

From Wikipedia:

Without fumigation or irradiation as whole fruit, mangosteens have been illegal for importation in commercial volumes into the United States due to fears that they harbor the Asian fruit fly which would endanger US crops. This situation, however, officially changed on July 23, 2007 when irradiated imports from Thailand were allowed upon FDA approval of irradiation, packing and shipping techniques[6].

I discovered this delicious fruit on a recent trip to Vietnam. Mangosteen is very common there. All around Saigon there are people riding bicycles with the basket filled with these fruits. For less than two dollars they will give you a bag of them, and if you ask, the vendor will cut around the circumference and pop off the top exposing the inner white flesh. Yummy!

Portena says on Sep 15, 2007, 23:13:

The rind is supposed to be the healthiest part of the fruit as it's the part with the most antioxidents. It's very bitter though so most people probably throw it away. There is a fruit juice on the market that tastes good and uses the rind in the mix. Lots of mangosteen health drinks claim they have all the antioxidants in the recipe, but there is really only one juice on the market that does (the recipe is patented so that's how you know it's really the only drink using the antioxident rich rind).

It's something I do on the side because I like the product. Mangosteen is nutritious even without the rind, but I like knowing I'm getting a product with all the best in its recipe.

mangosteen is a good tasting fruit (juice), but I think it's over-rated, as to the benefits.
It's no miracle. It's another great fruit, thrown into the mix.
