So there I was, a young spry of a midshipmen hanging out at Mildenhall Royal Airforce Base. Traveling "space available," I was wearing my uniform, though I was on vacation. And we all know how the British feel about Navy folks: no sooner do my buddy and I start hiking down the street when some officers in a little euro-fag car pull up next to us and offer us a ride to the nearest officers club to throw back a few pints o' ale.

Off we go.

Picture the usual dingy, small, almost deserted British pub. Same warm beer. Some military regalia. And one lone woman standing in the corner tossing darts at a board.

I can't really get an eyeball on her, but my host catches me trying, and says to me, "Right mate, she's a real swimmer aint she?"

I'm thinking to myself: triathlete? 100 meter dash? What?

My host sees the look of bewilderment in my fresh, yankee face, heaves a sigh, and explains.

"Right mate. Everybody knows that women in Scandinavia are beautiful, right? Ever seen an ugly Scandinavian woman?"

"Well... no"

"That's because they're not allowed. When a little girl is born, they take a good long look at 'er. If she's ugly, they toss her into the sea."

"Huh!?"

"And if she can swim, she makes it to England."
