Has anyone seen this Colombian film? Do you recommend it?

EL CARRO (THE CAR)
Spanish with English subtitles.
Colombia/2005/93 min.

The purchase of an automobile - that symbol of power, wealth, modernity and mobility - has a special impact on one Columbian family in this funny, warm coming-of-age (or, more accurately, coming-of-car) tale. The Velez family seemed forever doomed to take public transportation, but their world changes dramatically after Dad impetuously buys their neighbor's fire-red 1950s Chevrolet. The Teenage Son sees the car as a babe-magnet, Dad gets self-confidence and sudden interest from a curvaceous neighbor, and Mom receives some added spark in the romantic department as well. Despite constant breakdowns, the car serves as catalyst and witness to each family member's development.

Director: Luis Orjuela; Producer/Screenwriter: Dago Garcia; Cinematographers: Juan Carlos Vasquez; Editor: Monica Cifuentes.
Cast: Cesar Badillo, Luly Boss, Zaira Valenzuela, Diego Cadavid, Elkin Dias, Fernado Garcia, Claudia Lozano.

Sorry about the "Columbian" mispelling... It came in the original and I didn't correct it.

I understand this is a POSITIVE PORTRAYAL OF COLOMBIA... A Colombian film which features a "babe magnet" sounds like something of interest to many on PBH! Has no one seen this Colombian movie? Will I have to go see it without a recommendation from PBH?

Where can you see the film?

toneloc24 says on Sep 22, 2005, 07:48:

In Colombia, LOL!!!

I was almost afraid to ask. ja ja

toneloc24 says on Sep 22, 2005, 09:23:

If I can get my hands on a copy of it, after I see the film, I'll bring one back for you.

I actually had the choice of seeing this flick or Rosario Tijeras. Great choice, although my ex was pretty skirmish throughout the movie.

For me, violence, sex, lots of cursing, and drugs movies win out everytime. Call me shallow, but I want entertainment. Reality exists when I step out of the movie theatre.

Now I'm trying to find Secuestro Express.

I only accept poor quality bootleg copies. ;-)

litost says on Sep 22, 2005, 12:18:

I saw the movie!!! It was actually on a night bus last december, when I was returning to Manizales from Santa Marta.

It was entertaining enough, had a few laughs and at least didn't fall asleep. Goofy sometimes overdone humour, but very colombian in all ways. Not a film you'll see at an awards ceremony, but overall a good comedy.

toneloc24 says on Sep 22, 2005, 12:42:

Kernow - I don't. I get the clearest possible, and DVDs, not Divx.

If I can find some in my limited time, I'll grab a copy for you. Too hard to find Colombian movies here in the USA.

"Don't tase me, bro!!!!"

kernow62 says on Sep 22, 2005, 12:53:

I was just joking toneloc, I was just thinking back to some DVDs a friend brought over to the house last week; they were unreleased movies, $5 each. We popped one in and even though my preamp showed it encoded as Dolby Digital it was just stereo and the picture was real bad.

I appreciate the kind offer, shoot me a PM and let me know. I occasionally find Colombian movies on eBay, but nothing that is soley for the domestic Colombian market.

toneloc24 says on Sep 22, 2005, 14:32:

I've actually got some great quality bootlegs in Bogota.

Actually, here in the USA, I was able to buy a bootleg copy Carlito's Way: Rise To Power two weeks. It's officially released next week or so.

Movies like Rosario Tijeras or El Rey never see the light of day up here in the USA, unless backed by a US studio. I sincerely doubt if this movie will ever make it up to the USA either. Therefore, I buy them in Colombia.

How about porn? Any Colombian porn?

couldnt find any when i was down there.. the ones i saw at the video store were all US made. Maybe the bootleg street ones have made in COL ones.. i'll check it out when i return next month. but what's the spanish word for porn?

utopiacowboy says on Sep 23, 2005, 15:04:

I think the Spanish word for porn is porn. My theory is that they don't need porn and that porn is a pathetic gringo invention.

Blame the Germans I believe the history is something like this:

1. Ancient civilizations, including Peruvians, with stoneware made in erotic shapes

2. Woodcuts of erotic images, covered with ink, then transferred to paper.

3. Moveable type -- 1st the Bible translated from Latin to German and widely distributed. 2nd was porn (pictures and stories) mass produced for the first time.

caslug says on Sep 23, 2005, 15:11:

porn has been around for ages.. probably since caveman learn how to draw cave painting. Betcha that some horny caveman got a stack of porn drawer on rocks, but he had to hide it cave closet. So his wife couldnt find em! Japanese actually had porn drawing for thousands of years.

Gringos just perfected porn into a business. Since COL assimilate so much of US culture, i think porn is next. COL definitely lags behind Brazil for this stuff.

utopiacowboy says on Sep 23, 2005, 17:34:

Wow, now there's an idea. Everybody's always on the site looking for business ideas. How about high quality porn from Colombia? For those gringos without the cajones to come and get it in Colombia, they can wank Mr. Happy at home while slobbering over the delectable Colombianas desnudas.

I just saw the movie... I think Desi might enjoy it as it deals with family relationships, male-female gender roles, dating, customs, fiestas and celebrations of holidays and rites of passage, etc.

However, it really seems to emasculate the Colombian male. Shows Colombia as basically a matriarchal society where the Colombian male's love of his partner even overcomes the temptation of a hot "morena" neighbor who tries to seduce him. The married man refuses saying he loves his wife and could not betray her trust.

porno o peliculas verdes.
The idea had already dawned on me about directing some Colombian skin except my conscience won't have none of it, pretty much the reason I stopped selling drugs, I just smoke the stuff now.

platano it takes a real macho to be faithful to your wife in spite of the come-ons from a hot morena neighbor:)

I've always thought that the matriarchy is well and alive in Colombia. My father-in-law didn't get to pick his own underwear and yet he always considered himself as the head of the household. Only that my mother-in-law knew better and let him have that illusion.

Which movie was that?

Cheers,
Desi

UC do you really think that us witty and clever and "vivos" colombians hadn't thought of making colombian porn before you came up with the idea?? those movies you can find downtown, or in san andresito here in bogota they're called something like "chicas calientes en girardot" the series extends to cali, san andres and i think cartagena.

platano says on Sep 24, 2005, 08:05:

Desi, The movie is "El Carro" (2003), but apparently just arriving in the USA (at least I'd never seen it presented here before I saw it last night.

Based on the movie I'd say the matriarchy is alive and well in Colombia. Also shows the women as being the most intelligent, the most sensible, the most attractive (may be some personal bias on my part), and the males as composing the criminal element, the easily frustrated, who easily resort to violence (domestic violence is depicted with the father taking off his belt and threatening family members), the male who can't handle either his liquor or his money. The male goes to war (unless money can be gotten for the "tarjeta militar")

I hope you get to see it, Desi, as I would value your comments (as always).

No, Carolain, I hadn't. It's just that you don't see much Colombian porn so maybe there's not much interest in it.

ShazCas says on Sep 24, 2005, 10:28:

El Carro I've seen it and have a copy of it on DVD. It's a heartwarming film about a car and a family, and it's also party a coming of age film. I like this film because it is funny, upbeat and has a nostalgic film. It wouldn't win any Oscars, but is well worth seeing, especially if you're interetsed in seeing a bit of what Bogota is like and want to understand more about Colombian humour and family traditions.

Desideria (Moderator) says on Sep 24, 2005, 13:32:

I'll try to find it on DVD. Sounds like a movie I'd definitely enjoy. Thanks for the recommendation.
