The ELN is the second, smaller left-wing terrorist grouping in Colombia. There's a BBC profile of them:

For some reason there is never a straight answer about violence around Medellin.
My biggest question is if its still happening ? Cause its a pretty scary idea to share a town with people who are used to this kind of violence.

A horrible image was the innocent old lady laying dead in the street after a night of them shooting into the darkness at anything that moved.

Bucketed down yesterday :)

I'm glad things are working out for you. You should write some posts about your experiences. 'Our Man in Cali' and all that. It'd be an interesting read.

I try to stay away from movies where the show Colombia in the very same negative scenario, but couple of weeks ago, my friends told me I needed to see it.
I borrowed La Sierra and I liked the documentary!
I was amazed how teenagers knew so much about firearms and how they worked together in a military fashion to build a zone of control in the community to guarantee protection against subversive groups in their barrio. Edison the commander was interesting young leader who was engulfed with so much responsibility in the ongoing war and responsibility with his large family.
I hope Jesus have found job training because he did not qualify for the grant. He looked like a fine young man who needed help to achieve an education or training in a career to help him to get back on his feet again. He has a wife and a son.
The documentary won several film awards and I believe the conflict happened over fifteen years ago? I not quite sure about the date.

Can't say I liked it, just cashing in on a really shitty situation. Showing violence because it is a quick eye-grabber. FROM WHAT I HAVE HEARD (so I'm not saying it is 100%), from a producer friend of mine here is that the guys who made it have trouble making other projects here in Colombia.
One of hte reasons I didn't like it is due to the audience. Down here, the only ones really talking it up, were people most likely to go that route - they loved the guns, bitches, etc. so that was a real turnoff.

I really liked the documentary and I'm against movies where violence is the only topic of discussion.

I recently saw it, and as a documentary, I think it hit it right on the nail.... It's a documentary, no hiding the truth at the time they were taping... with additonal commentary of what happened after... Medellin, did have issues based on "Turf Wars".... I did like the portrayal of 3 different characters and their paths.... The blood scenes were gruesome, but they were real... Unfortunately, everyone sees the documentary years later... and will automatically come to the conclusion that, these events are taking place now, when they are not....
