Has anyone brought their dog from the US to Colombia?

Does anyone have any advice or experience on the subject of travelling with a dog (chocolate labrador) from the US to Colombia? I will be relocating to Colombia in June and really want to have my dog sent over (by relatives) after I get settled in. Is this a terrible idea? Is it practical? I can find out all the logistical information that I need on the internet, such as necessary requirements for pet travel, but I am interested in finding out from someone that has done this whether or not this is a terrible idea and not worth it or will it not be a major problem. Anyone?

I'm not looking into prices. I looked at the former posts and there is not much discussion other than prices and general info. that I can find on the internet.

Contact US Embassy The US Embassy should be able to help you. Their employees often bring pets down and I bet they've got guidelines and recommended shippers. The trouble will be getting through the switchboard to the right person.

I just could not resist this one, sorry. I have to leave my dog at home when I go away, she has to feed the cats, pay the bills and keep the house clean.

Being of unsound mind and dubious disposition, I cannot be held legally liable for any indiscretions."¡El diablo me hizo hacerlo!" But don't worry, be happy.

Yes, I have brought a Purchan breed Colombian dog... into the USA. I was sure to bring all the papers regarding vaccinations. No problem getting into USA.

The hardest part of the ordeal was due to weather. The airlines stated flat out that they would not take the dog if the temperature at the time of the flight was over x degrees (I think it was about 80) because they didn't want the risk of a dog dying in the holding area from heat. (even though Purchan dogs are normally hardy)

So I scheduled three midnight flights (counting all the transfers) so as to catch a cooler temperature. Actually 3 or 4 in the morning would have been ideal but there weren't any flights then.

By the way Purchan is a very common breed in Colombia. It stands for "pura chanda" and they are all over Colombia.

It all worked out in the end.

Can't you cut them up into little managable bits, pack them in the luggage and reassemble once you arrive in Colombia? I would look into this, I'm sure it is possible.

Little pieces!? Actually, I think I'll pass on the whole division into labrador pieces. If only she could squeeze into one of those little rat dog carrying cases like you see with the celebreties. She eats those kinds of dogs for a midnight snack though. Flying her out of Miami during a cooler time was pretty much the idea that I had, being that Miami will definitely be over 85 degrees F when I leave in June. What is it like arriving into Colombia into the Barranquilla airport for a pet? I'm thinking she would also have to arrive very late or early in the morning, hoping that it would once again be under 85 degrees. What owners do for their pets! This is why I ask if this is just a disaster waiting to happen. As most owners that are attached to their dogs, I want her to be with me- I'm selfish, but I also don't want her to suffer or for something to go wrong.

nobody wants there pets to suffer... i've taken three dogs and two chickens to colombia. landing at the medellin airport and once first at bogota. (that sucked)

we live in envigado and we had one bull mastif, one schnauser and one german shepherd/great dane mix. two were monstros dogs, the other a lap pooch.

as for the flight from miami, it's a quickie to medellin and everything workes/worked fine. flying from los angeles to bogota then to medellin was a total 'fuck' for the dog. but he lived. he was the guard dog in medellin and after a few years, flew back to calif for retirement.

if you're flying from miami, all things considered, it's quick. just do it and make sure you have a large kennel. the smallest possible, is the worst for the dog. give him space...pay for it if you have to.
