Has anybody being to Niue?

Hi all,

I have been offered a 2 years post in Alofi, Niue -a Small Island in the Pacific north of New Zealand-. I know this is as far -and removed- as you can get from Colombian topics in this site, but have any of you ''big travellers" been to Niue?
I checked the LP but still think I'd like to hear opinions of people who have been there.
I'd like to know about infrastructure, society, cost, leisure and life in general.

Thanks,

ElBigie

Yes I have been to Niue and a couple of other Pacific islands etc also two of my parents friends now teach in Niue...I didn't really enjoy it much its probably been my least favourite destination to travel to and my least favourite pacific island (of the ones I've been too)...there is nothing there at all unless your a retired/semi retired hardcore hermit type then its definately not worth considering...I'm pretty hermit/bohemian like and it would be too bigger ask for me to live there I would go so far as to say I'd rather be dropped in the middle of the Australian outback by myself to live for a couple of years than live in Niue for that period of time...Why would you even consider an offer to live/work there?
Are you a anti-social senior citizen? or an exceptionally anti-social/reclusive younger person?
Cost (cheap) Nothing to spend money on)
Leisure (none) you make your own fun there so to speak)
Infrastructure (almost non-existent) very primitve/basic 28.8kp Modems
have just become available (last I heard)
Life in general my parents friends are working as teachers and have found it very hard going....students were tough in general (in their opinion anyway)

richj,

Thanks for your comments. I'm interested in working there because there is a lot to gain from a career experience point of view. I would be working in Environmental and Natural Resources Management, and It seems to me there is a lot to be done in that place. I'd like to go first and have a look before committing, but I do not have the time nor the $$$$.

I'm quite social and enjoy going out, specially movies, dinning, etc. Obviously Niue can't offer that. But at least diving and cycling should be a possibilty there??.
As you may have guess is one of these big decisions that need to be made soon but very carefully. Are there any chances of contacting your parents' friends via -email?.

Cheers,

ElBigie
