May I be the First to have the honor to... Wish you the same !! Even though here in the midwest there are 4 hours and 15 minutes to go. My aunt is Swedish and she is married to a Colombian Jew. What a combination. Anyway, thanks for your intervention with Gary....I'm not arguing with him. If anything, I'm just egging him on because he told me to get out of his discusion.

Anyway...My best to you and your love ones for a happy and healthy New Year........Gomez (see, I really can write a short thread!)

Anyway, it's only 8PM here, and while you're packing it in...I'm going to fire it up with a few people---no big deals.
one more time---thanks and happy new year ----

thank you, Gomezman5! I hope you had a lovely New Year's party last night as well:)
Here there was a special sobriety in the year end revelry. Most fireworks were suspended honoring the plight of so many families affected by the tsunamis in Far East. There are still over 3000 Swedes missing, and the incial death toll of 44 identified Swedes may get a lot higher. The ambulance helicopters have been arriving all day with wounded and many can't be repatriated yet because they cannot be moved.
This is, of course, only a drop in the ocean if you consider the dead and homeless local population in that area.
May the coming year bring relief for those who have suffered much,
Desi

I feel bad for them... I hope the devastation ends relatively soon, but somehow I think the effects will continue to ripple on for a long, long time. How sad.

I do think the US media is too biased towards the US. And if I hear the story one more time about how that lady from Australia was forced to choose between her too sons (she got both back a few hours later), I will hurl. How about all of the people that lost all of their sons, or all of their children? Then we keep hearing that 12 Americans died. Very sad but I think the total death toll is almost up to 150K. End of rant, sorry.

World tragedy I agree with Kim. It seems like the media in the US focuses a lot on the few stories of the "white" survivors or victims, when the vast majority of the victims where local, humble people, that lost their whole families and their homes. Those local survivors will have to face now the harsh reality of living in poverty and in a devastated land. I hope 2005 brings relief to all the people that have experienced such terrible loss.

I agree wholeheartedly with both kim and mariangela. I have been positively surprised though, how the media here and also ordinary people talking about the tragedy have pointed out how the local people are doing their utmost to give succour to the hurt and desperate tourists in the area. How the thai people who maybe own two shirts would give both of them to these people who have lost everything. Almost everybody I know and have talked to in these last few days have donated money to help organizations, and people will not forget these random acts of kindness but will be there helping and rebuilding the devastated areas.
Cheers,
Desi

I saw where they had to stop people that had lost children in the tsunamis from adopting children that were orphaned (I think it was in Sri Lanka, and they wanted the people to go through official channels). That was sorrowful but beautiful, to think of so many people that had lost loved ones just picking up other needy children to raise as their own.

I switched my home page to the BBC news, which I believe someone here mentioned. It is 1000% better than using Yahoo USA as a front page.

BBC better than US media? Sure it is if you like a biased, liberal, socialist, and essentially anti American perspective of the current happenings in the world.

Thanks Gomezman5 that's just what I've been looking for.

I don't think the BBC is anti-American.

Do you reach this conclusion because they report about the war in Iraq from a country where the majority of people feel they were duped into a war they didn't want by Bush and his puppet Blair.

I prefer ITV.

For me BBC worlds reporting is a bit to biased and left leaning in their reporting, compared with CNN International which seems to offer better overall coverage.

Kim you might consider

Any reporting is subject input/manipulation.

Just as an example many reports that I've seen on CNN about Denmark has had factual error.

Yep - thanks! That's what my home page is. I haven't seen any anti-American stuff there, and usually I'm really sensitive to anti-American propaganda.

Gomezman - I'm even worse than a liberal socialist. I'm a Save the World hippie at heart that follows the teachings of a Buddhist monk by the name of Thich Naht Hanh. Thich would be disappointed at how I treat trolls, though, so I've been trying to be good in 2005. I've even been called a commie before by a patient when I admitted I watched 60 Minutes on CBS. However, I respect others' opinions and always keep an open mind. And I was in the military, and raised by a Marine Corps fighter pilot so I've got that background clouding things up, too.

What do you use for news, just out of curiosity? I don't like newspapers; they tend to pile up so I prefer on-line. You have to admit BBC anything is better than relying on Yahoo! for news headlines, though, right?

Not very many but this site... ...says there are five or six thousand and nine synagogues. Another Google link showed addresses of 12 synagogues. And then there is the "myth" that the reason some of the people from the Medellin area are relatively prosperous relative to the rest of the country is because they have Jewish ancestry. David Bushnell, in his "The Making of Modern Colombia - A Nation In Spite of Itself" calls this myth basura.

Tinto
Well thank you very much for that fact, I wasn't near aware of that fact. Would it be also part of the reason the city of Medellin has the highest murder rate in the world?

Whipstatic Next time you are in Bogotá on a Saturday near Calle 94 with 7a you will see plenty roaming around among the body guards of some of them, you can even see some of the more traditional ones walking dressed in black with hats and long sidelocks. There are a few quite influential including ex ministra Fanny Kertzman and now ambassador in Canada if I recall correctly, the Gillinsky family ex owners of Banco de Colombia, and Leo Katz who owns quite a few of the restaurants and bars around the zona Rosa, including Luna and Il Pomeriggio.

Wow

That is mind blowing!, I didnt know they had so much influence. I think Colombians are not aware of how much control their Jews have.

Hittler would have had a fit if he had known that. One good thing I can pick from what you say is that they stay legit and keep away from the drug trade, something difficult for the upper classes in general.

Save the Wildcats I get my news from about a couple of dozen differant sources, but the one I get the most and best informed news from is the British Financial Times (FT).

The FT is a financial newspaper but with a lot of ordinary worlwide news coverage, some reports are a bit biased, but it is one of the least biased that I have come across.

When I am in England, I also get the weekly additions of the International Herald Tribune, which is very good as well.

I find most TV news to be sensational, but I watch it so I can put a picture to what I am reading elsewhere.
