Hangovers in Colombia

Maybe it was the quantity of my alcohol consumption but for some reason I suffered some of the worst hangovers of my life while in Medellín. It wasn't so much the typical symptoms of a hangover -- headache, nausea, etc. It was a confused, depressed, clouded-mind type of hangover. In fact, I gave up drinking after one weekend where I swore I was going insane. Granted, I did tend to drink quite heavily although it was usually beer or wine. But, dios mio, I never felt so shitty in my life. In fact, I was amazed and thrilled that my hangovers seemed to disappear when I returned to Miami. Is elevation at play here? Any one else suffer in the same way?

just out of curiosity
what did you drink?
Are you sure you didn't get hold of a bottle of bad booze? Low-quality rum could also do that, I've heard or maybe somebody slipped something in your drink?

Best cure for hangover Colombian-style: spend the day at a swimming pool, drink plenty of water and eat a huge sancocho de gallina for lunch.

I don't know about Medellin but because of the altitud my husband said he gets more easily drunk in Bogota.

But you have to watch out in Colombia for bad alcohol too.

Altitude has a lot to do with it in Medellin. You have to be mindful of that when drinking. In Barranquilla, I can drink bottles of rum, whiskey, and aguardiente with my friends without any major hangover. In Bogota and Medellin, I have to be more mindful of the altitude. After a couple of bottles, I break it down to beer and maybe a red bull energy drink.

From locals, I've heard that it does occur, but I've never experienced bad/bootlegged alcohol. In fact, most places that we go to will show us the sealed bottle of liquor, allow us to inspect it, before opening it for us and serving drinks.

What I have learned in my travels is, you should drink soup or consumé after drinking. Before you go to sleep, or as part of your 1st meal the next day. Don't ask why, it just works.

Drinking in Bogata Here is some good advice. I just returned from a five day trip to Bogata and was invited to family party. (Colombian family) It started at two and ended at midnight. I will never again attempt to compete with a Colombian when it comes to drinking and having fun. Great people, great time, but the following day is really a "Bit**)

i thought the saying was as follows matey :

drink beer then wine you will be fine .....however
drink wine then beer makes you go queer....

so i guess thats good advice especially if ya dont wanna go sharing your bed with a maricon for the nite....

or final thought, people have raw eggs with tomato juice/water but how about when in colombia have some local remedy - HUEVOS IGUANOS - or some local dish elmodafaque and the other north american members living in colombia like...

My first Colombian party... ...was also a surprise. We were invited over for a drink before dinner at 8:00 and at 12:00 we were just getting around to dinner. Where I am from a drink or two and then dinner is the custom. Almost couldn't make it to the table.

Learned you need to pace yourself when in Bogota.

elk, my husband started to compete or not compete but he didn't wanted to be left out, so he started drinking neat vodka in Bogota, he usually is alright here in the Uk but there because of the altitud it was worth.

he got so drunk next day he slept until 7pm, and could not remembered a thing of the night before. not even that He was the only one dancing to the rolling stone. :(

Hangovers pt. 2 I guess I made the fatal mistake of mixing my alcohol and thinking I could handle aguardiente like a local. Of the times I was sick from drinking, the fire water always played a part. I taught my wife's friend his first English words - muthaf* - while vomiting in the sink for two hours as he helped me aim straight. Another time, on a trip to Jardín, we met up at with an old friend of my wife's and proceeded to drink a quick number shots of aguardiente. Then we headed to another bar and drank rum. A couple hours later I was writhing on the floor in agony. So, I guess I learned the hard way about mixing things. It was only after a year that I learned to stick to beer or wine and absolutely no aguardiente or rum. I also had the misfortune of getting "gastritis" while I was there, which is another subject worthy of discussion since it seems so common.

Norwegians and Swedes can put away a great quantity of beer, aquavit, vodka, whiskey during a holiday season too. Yes, 7% beer or 6,5% is the standard.

aguardiente The worst hangovers usually involve aguardiente!

Yeah, not mixing is key. One version I heard is keep it in a progression. Beer - Wine - Liquor. You can mix, but only in that order. If you go back to beer after the others, look out.

Drinking water helps a lot.

In Colombia you can buy those little packets of salts that are sold as a hangover cure. Has anyone had success with those?

My favourite meal for the morning after -- something greasy like pollo apanado. And a jugo de mora en leche to go with it.

The confused, depressed, clouded mind feeling sounds a bit like altitude effects. I still remember visiting the Nevado del Ruiz after a 5am bender and one hour's sleep. In that trip you go from 2900m up to 5000m and back down in the one day.

que nota!

Hangovers in Bogota the altitude definitely has a big effect on it. Best to take it easy for 4-5 days upon arriving.

Of course I didn't take my own advice this time around and my gf her best friend and I polished off 3 bottles of Viejo de Caldas the night after I arrived. They said they really wanted to see me pissy drunk once, and they got it! I was OK the next day though. I've got Ukranian and Polish blood in me and THOSE guys invented the stuff!

as for a cure, the Canadian way is to have a 'redeye', beer with tomato juice in equal parts and maybe a nice raw egg in there! Works every time!

Toneloc was completely loco.... due to aguardiente. My poor novia at the time, then ex-novia after that night, now my novia again...what i put her through that noght was extremely bad. One of the worse experiences, involving liquor, of my life.

I completely respect the power of aguardiente now. I still drink it, but only in the company of other dudes, never my novia or someone female that I care about.

To the OP, I think DonGringo said something about the sugar content, which also is something to consider. I think you also need to consider altitude in the mix, and drink water accordingly. Drinking in Miami is not the same as drinking in Medellin or Bogota.

ever heard of shambles rubito ? there are people who regularly get wasted on vodka redbull over here in london and i myself have stayed up to 5-6 am after a nite on this stuff. interesting enough there is quite a few things the brits mix red bull with one of which is renowned rocket fuel.

champagne & red bull = chambulls or shambles...

they have red bull down in colombia ? maybe you can try mixing it with the local drink and start a new craze - rediente...

yep there are certainly more queers than steers in certain parts of london but i think there are a lot more chocalate starfish chasers for you to eye up in cartagena in colombia or at the alabama correctional facility/san francisco bay area or LA. i would say there are more uphill gardeners in colombia or the city of san fran compared to the whole of the UK.

mind you we do have some famous batty boys like elton john and george michael which doesnt do our reputation much good.
