Today in Cartagena I saw Pablo T-shirts for sale at the tourist market. It has Pablo's photo and "El Patron" in big letters. Yuck!

You're probably going to be seeing a whole lot of Pablo Escobar t-shirts in Medellin in the near future.

Don't forget.... Colombia is spending $100 million USD to promote tourism with a project dedicated to "El Patron."

I wish they could spend 100 million to make the world forget El Patron...

MT - do you have documentation of that info? 100 mm? i cannot believe they would promote his image.

tejasmarcos says on Mar 11, 2008, 20:33:

ah yeah. i remember reading that now. the 100 mm is for the development of the property and a prison of some sort. it is not necessarily to promote his image. i would be suprised to see pablo t-shirts here, but i see chit everyday here that is mind boggling - mainly processes, but boggling nonetheless.

Medellin Traveler says on Mar 11, 2008, 20:45:

Why does everyone seem to be against promoting travel to Medellin by using the history of Pablo Escobar in the marketing?

Medellin Es Una Chimba! - www.medellintraveler.com

Robert Jorge says on Mar 11, 2008, 20:52:

MT, I agree. But I think Pablo T's are pushing it. There's got to be something else better to sell to tourists that represents Medellin. Maybe like one of those Key West Tshirts that has all those tavern names on the back - except with famous Medellin bars? But Escobar - yep, that's up there with Che, or the red star over olive drab shirts and hats.

Lisa Zee says on Mar 11, 2008, 20:55:

Why???????????????? He was evil, and ruined the country reputation, one thing is to be curious and see some of his places but promoting Medellin because of Pablo, what about some coca plantations and some statues of dead guerrilleros without a hand or a head?
Whatever happened to "Medellin the city of the eternal spring" I don`t even want to go farther, you will hearing more from Colombians about that!

Lisa Zee says on Mar 11, 2008, 20:58:

I know, let`s start tours of all the dirt from Medellin...... OMG! Tell me you are kidding.

DodgerDogs says on Mar 11, 2008, 20:59:

Pablo Escobar,
Was a Monster and promoting him would be a mistake for Colombia.
The man was a child molestor in his later years, and was behind numerous killings.
It was a great day when he was shot down, they should bull doze his grave sight.

ooops! ....Did I say that?

"Why does everyone seem to be against promoting travel to Medellin by using the history of Pablo Escobar in the marketing?"

Um, maybe because this POS is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Colombians!

CatGirl says, "You GO GIRL!"

No you didn't!

Simon,
What do you think about Colombia spending money to promote Escobar?

Does it make any difference if they don't "promote" him, but have something to make people aware of Medellin's violent past with him?

It's better than denying he ever existed, that makes it seem like Colombians are just trying to hide something. And, if they're hiding that from tourists..... what else are they hiding?

This is also a great way to compare the present with the future in an effort to show how far Medellin has come. No?

I'm looking for more than "he was a bad person."

well put DD. the guy almost collapsed the country. he got what he deserved. i hear his kid is back trying to take back properties and using force to do it. one day he will take a bullet as well.

the government is promoting pablo using negative reinforcement by attaching his property to a prison. that is the only way it is justifiable.

billyb says on Mar 12, 2008, 06:56:

Only a gringo with a Pablo fixation could think promoting Pablo for tourism is a great idea. I like tejas' view above.

tejasmarcos says on Mar 12, 2008, 07:18:

fascination is one thing (not a problem), promotion is another. it is already happening to a small degree privately, but i think publicly it is a no no.

just my opinion.

MT - did it take you 4 hours to get to this place?

god is in your head

DodgerDogs says on Mar 12, 2008, 09:29:

Colombia,
Is doing a tourist type deal with Pablo Escobars place(which is sad).

They are spending less then 1 million dollars to do this , hell if Colombia had 100 million
dollars to gable on a tourist attraction, do you think they would need Plan Colombia $$$
anymore.
In Colombia you can build a Disneyland type park for 100 million , as the rides at
1 million a piece to construct would get you 100 different rides.

azunoman says on Mar 12, 2008, 09:37:

At some point will Colombia romanticize Pablo like they do here in the US for such characters as Kit Carson, Al Capone, Billy the Kid etc.? They all have some sort of tourist attraction attached to them. The US list of scum bags that have been revered now by movie makers is coming to a country near you.

Pablo is in hell where he belongs, those that are interested in immortalizing him can meet him there.

Ready, Fire, Aim

Mr. Hollywood says on Mar 12, 2008, 09:37:

Maybe they should build the following theme rides at Hacienda Napoles: "El Secuestro", "Sicario Express", "Corbata Colombiana", "Sobredosis".

billyb says on Mar 12, 2008, 09:42:

Mr. H, don't forget "La Carro-Bomba".

ColombianoGringo says on Mar 12, 2008, 09:43:

This is sick. Why the hell would anyone in Colombia want to glorify that piece of shit? Is his grave public? If so, a stop on the tour should allow tourists to piss on it. I'd sign up for that.

Mr. Hollywood says on Mar 12, 2008, 09:50:

Good catch, Billyb. And, of course, "Los Desechables" where the rider cruises through a simulated Medellin Circa 1989 shooting street kids like they're rats.

tejasmarcos says on Mar 12, 2008, 09:50:

like it or not, northamericans glorify their villians. it is ingrained from the early years when we played cowboys & indians as well as cops & robbers. i mean, who the hell wanted to be the cop? i never did, always a robber....

god is in your head

Mr. Hollywood says on Mar 12, 2008, 09:51:

I didn't realize Medellin was in North America.

tejasmarcos says on Mar 12, 2008, 09:54:

no, but the northamericans are coming to medellin and the tourism authorities are setting up in anticipacion. they are starting to think like gringos and that is sad actually. it is just a matter of time b4 this place is much more full of tourists, like it or not.
