gyms in Medellin

Anybody know of a decent gym in Medellin? I will be staying in the Poblado area. Any info appreciated. Thanks, beef27

There are Bodytech gyms located in Las Vegas, Laureles, and in the Vizcaya mall at Calle 10 No. 32-115 (which is close to Poblado). Good variety of well-maintained machines and nice scenery(!), perhaps pricey at 80,000 COP/wk (presumably cheaper with longer memberships). Decent gym, although purists will bemoan minor inconveniences such as no dip belts, few good squat or power racks -- apart from the at *&$*&%* Smith machines, bench presses without lower safety bars, a scarcity of weight collars and hand chalk, and a "juice bar" which seems to be closed half the time.

This is the case with the Bodytech gyms I've seen. I'm really nitpicking here, the gyms are quite good and probably better than most in Colombia. I'm spoiled by living close to a Canadian military gym, which would be better (if it had half the eye candy of a Colombia Bodytech). Most folks don't lift seriously and won't notice what is missing. And at least Bodytech is not a crappy boutique gym with only a few big plates, or where folks get annoyed if you drop a 400 pound barbell or attempt an overhead snatch (pssst, it's a GYM).

I have been to body tech, you can pay per day. But it is pricy, even for a regular membership. Alot of eye candy, and is in a nice area. Ask for a tour, there is a guy there that speaks english, Icant remember his name. I highly reccomend using the eliptical and watch the ladies do the spinning. WHAT MOTIVATION! It's kind of hidden in the poblado area.

The per diem cost was high (in the Cartagena Bodytech as of March 2007) 40,000 COP for one day, 80,000 COP for a week, something more than 160,000 COP for a month. They do have discount codes but I don't know if these only apply to seniors, friends, Colombians, etc. -- they wouldn't give me a discount just because I simply asked for one. This is usually "worth a try" in Colombia, as you probably know.

(where's the)Beef27 are you going to Colombia to work out?
Is this your first trip to Col?
If so, I understand and appreciate the thought, but...
You are going to forget about working out, once you get there, unless you are fortunate enough to be having an EXTENDED STAY.
but, if you are only going to be there a week or so, then you are going to realize quickly:
I CAN DO THAT SH*T BACK HOME;
I'M IN COL! AND,
NOW IT'S TIME TO....
RUMBA!

I like to work out when on vacation. Makes me feel I can drink and eat what the heck I want, gets me back in the workout routine (since at home I'm often busy at work and can't always get to the gym)... and in Colombia the amount of eye candy in the gyms before ten and after six is, well, impressive. Other types of workouts are good, too. Think I'm going to use the name "Fz" from now on -- I'm a lazy, lazy gringo.

Also, gyms in Latin America are a great place to meet fit girls. Many latinas keep in good shape and like a guy who does the same. I was in Buenos Aires for a week and joined the Megatlon in Alto Palermo. Now THAT'S a boutique gym. To get a decent workout, I'd have to use every large plate they had in the place -- they only had six or eight 20 kg plates in the whole gym, I couldn't believe it. I was lifting three or four times as much as the average guy there. And when I went to get a drink of water, I'd get back and find Argentine gym bunnies sitting on my bench or stretching against the machines I was using.

Sometimes one workout leads to another.

okay, I give in; You guys are right;
I was thinking ALL WRONG!

WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN A GYM,
CHALK-FULL OF COLOMBIANAAA I-CANDY?

Now, next time in Cali or Medellin, I'm gonna need some really dark glasses, unless I arrive a day ahead of time (for her to meet me there) This will never go over, with my Pastusa there. She will know, no, no, no.... what is going on.

"Hola amor; nosotros vamos a gymnasio, juntos. dos veces; una vez antes diez a la mañana y una vez después seises a la tarde: cada dia." ...and, she will be asking, in espanol of course: "Dear, what can you see, with those cheap sunglasses?"

They have a pretty exquisite facility at the Cali Intercontinental Hotel, but I made it as far as the swimming pool for a few laps to unwind and,.... no mas.

Man Tequilla has certianly been there. You seem to know the Bodytech in Medellin very well.
Yes bodytech is 80 mil por mes but you need to be there before 4 pm otherwise you cant get in. The full membership is 160 mil I believe.
Down calle 10 a bot is a gym called Forma. its a little smaller but nice but has no hot water last I was there. Its about 20 por mes cheaper.
There is one in Buenos Aires that is small but has benches and bikes and dumbells.Its a 5-6 mil taxi ride from Poblado. Its only 3 mil por dia!!. But its too crowded after 5pm to enjoy. Unless your just girl watching.

Man Tequila says on Apr 15, 2007, 18:37:

I've often gone to Bodytech after 4pm and no one has ever said anything. Course I paid 80mil per week, which could certainly be a tourist price.
