Grupo Niche in Orlando

Grupo Niche in Concert House of Blues
Downtown Disney
Doors open 9:00pm 21+

Just thought I would let those of you in Central Florida know of this upcoming show.

For those of you who like salsa a great local Colombian club, "Club Copa" owned a couple of mates.

Club Copa
5454 International Dr., east of the intersection of Kirkman Rd. and International Dr.
Phone: (407) 351-4866
Hot line: (407) 282-2308.
Excellent atmosphere, very comfortable (it isn't hot - the air conditioning system is fabulous!) This club has two levels, but the second level is surrounded by a bannister that allows you to look down upon the main dance floor. A second dance floor is upstairs near the center of the room and by the main bar. The music is varied but with a definite focus on Salsa and merengue, especially Colombian salsa. Open from Friday through Sunday from 7:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. This club is located inside the I-Drive Shopping Center across from Burger King. (Dress: Casual to Elegant).

Club Copa
5454 International Drive, al este de Kirkman Rd.
Teléfono: (407) 351-4866.
Hot line: (407) 282-2308
(Vestimienta: Casual - Elegante).

Just down the block is a Colombian chicken place Pio Pio, and around the corner is Santa Parilla open until 4 AM for late night snacks.

Speaking of Colombian food in Orlando, earlier today I stopped by Pinchos & Hot Dogs for a couple of perros calientes en estilo Colombiano, mmmm. Whilst there I picked up an issue of out local Colombian newspaper "Colombia Positiva". All in all a very pleasant day, and the weather was perfect.

Not sure of the rest of their US tour schedule. Is there a large enough Colombian community in the area to support a show? At the very least a Latin community that loves salsa? I am assuming that because you also had Juanes in the area the answer to at least one must be yes.

I will try and find the tour schedule.

I am actually more interested in the groups the night before Niche's performance, Fatboy Slim as well as The Crystal Method, fresh off their South American tour which included Colombia.

Niche has seen............... their better days a long time ago. As brilliant of a producer and arranger as Jairo Varela is, he really has not come up with anything substantial since in the last 10-12 years. I would go so far as to say that Niche has lived off it's reputation for a very long time.

Some groups can keep their reputation alive because they continure to produce music over the years. El Gran Combo is an example of such a group. They were around long before Niche, and they are considered as great as ever, even if many of their members are up there in age.

Their inability to hold on to key members contributed to their decline. But to be honest, Niche has not even come close to the greatness that they achieved in the mid to late 80's. At that time, they were truly one fantastic group.

And the G5 has spoken

Oh yeah I forgot to say that El Gran Combo is the headlining act with Niche as the opener. ;-) J. Douglas what concert do you want to know about?

http://www.fatboyslim.net/start.htm

http://www.thecrystalmethod.com/

Both this concert and the Gran Combo Niche are at the same venue, the House of Blues at downtown Disney. I only went to one show there, many years ago and it was terrible, the group was Acoustic Alchemy and they put on a great show, but they overbooked so many people had to stand and try and peer over the shoulders of others to see the show. Best local show I have seen was at the Tupperware Auditorium and that show was The California Guitar Trio, Robert Fripp & King Crimson. Excellent venue for a concert.

Kernow..... Hey, the last time Niche came to Chicago they played at a smaller (not small)auditorium and they still did not even sell out.

If things keep going that way, they may end up selling fans inside cars.

I am not going to see them, I've seen them many times in the past, but I am not a huge salsa fan.

I think you mentioned that Chicago has the second highest population of Puerto Ricans in the country so perhaps they aren't into Colombian salsa. How does Chicago's Colombian population stack up versus Miami and Central Florida's?

kernow62 says on Mar 13, 2005, 11:42:

U.S. metropolitan areas, ranked by Puerto Rican population, 2003:

1. New York City: 923,682

2. Philadelphia: 166,632

3. Chicago: 166,305

4. Orlando: 161,426

5. Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater: 97,805

6. Miami: 93,373

From what I have been reading, the population of Puerto Ricans in NYC is declining, Chicago is at a standstill or close to it, and Orlando is getting about 8000 new arrivals a year, so I would not be surprised if it is NYC #1 and Orlando #2 by now, when you factor in that Orlando is a relatively small place population wise, I would hazard a guess that we are pretty close to NYC figures as a percentage of the populace.

Gomezman5 says on Mar 13, 2005, 14:10:

Kernow..... I'll stand on my contention that Chicago has the second highest population or at least statisticaly equal to that of Philly. To say that Philly has just 300 more than Chicago is rediculous--totally.

First of all, the Puerto Rican population is the MOST transient of all Latino populations that travel back and forth from their native country to the US...not necessarily in raw numbers. In that case, nobody can come close to Mexico. But because Puerto Ricans are the only Latinos that are citizens of the US, they move back and forth to PR like Americans move from state to state.

Also, Chicago has the second largest Puerto Rican festival...outside of New York. It lasts one week. It also has the second largest PR day parade, which kicks off the week long celebration. Illinois also has more PR members in the state senate and state house than Philly. Because districts are apportioned based on population, and Chicago has more districts, that is further evidence that Chicago is larger than Philly. Speaking of Latino elected political district, the only Chicago congressional district that is a distinctly Latino district in population (65%) has a Puerto Rican congressman (Luis Gutierez 4th) I don't know if Philly does or doesn't have a PR cogressman.

In June, when the PR's have their festival, and all the PR's from NY come here to celebrate, I will ask them which population is larger. Their would know.

But 300 persons doesn't make a compelling case. Do those stats come from the census bureau. And as to orlando getting 8000 new PR's a year, all I ask is that you cite your source.....sounds inflated to me. There is a very special relationship between NY and PR. I will not believe they are leaving in the way that you indicate as such. NY is the ONLY place in the country where PRs have their own cultural idenity...They are referred to as New Yorricans.

kernow62 says on Mar 13, 2005, 15:30:

Hey, I don't count them, your government does, or attempts to do so. I agree it is splitting hairs regarding the 300. Now come back in a year or two and you will see both Chicago and Philly will have moved down the rankings a bit. Gomezman almost all you points can be easily explained by the fact that Chicago has an immigrant population of Puerto Ricans that has been established much longer than that in Orlando. It is only since the early 1990s that Orlando started receiving waves of Puerto Ricans, as well as loads from NYC and New Jersey. Just about any search on the Internet will confirm what I say, you mustn't have been to Orlando lately if you think at 8000 a year is an exageration. Fully 25% of all local businesses are Hispanic owned and Puerto Ricans are the majority of these, even though our Mexican population is growing faster, they tend not to have the opportunities of Puerto Ricans for obvious reasons. It is closer to PR than Chicago, the weather is closer to PR than Chicago, it is no wonder that they are chosing Orlando now. I believe the figures I cut and pasted were from our local paper, but to be fair it is owned by a Chicago paper, so it must be true.

http://memory.loc.gov/learn/features/immig/cuban4.html

Now if you would like to reclaim number 2 position for Chicago, perhaps you could persuade some of the many thousands in Orlando to leave. I think you would have a hard time convincing anyone that Chicago is fit for human habitation. ja ja

Gomezman5 says on Mar 13, 2005, 15:39:

Kernow.... I'm in a bit of a hurry but.............weather is irelavent...totally

If weather was a factor, they never would have gone to NY in the first place......logical response to your issue of the weather?

NY did not get to be cold over night...it never was a Miami you know.
My point is, they could have settled in almost any place if weather was a factor. And Chicago, being the second largest, is by the way, colder than NY. More later

kernow62 says on Mar 13, 2005, 16:04:

The jobs were in NYC and Chicago, both connected by sea to Puerto Rico, this before the era of widespread air travel. There wan't much work in Orlando before about 1980. However given a choice most cited weather being similar to Puerto Rico was a big factor in moving to Florida versus a North Eastern city.

Do a bit of research, Central Florida has increased it Puerto Rican population by about 90,000 in just the 1990s. That is more than half the entire Puerto Rican populace of Chicago, there hasn't been much of a slowdown this century either. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that at this rate Orlando area will surpass all but NYC in no time at all, if not already, I have seen figures as high as 205,000 Puerto Ricans in Orlando metro.

I would gladly wish this honour be bestowed on Chicago, I would much rather it be 200,000 Colombians. As I said, I don't right the news I just report it.

Gomezman5 says on Mar 13, 2005, 22:27:

Kernow...you would much rather it be 200,000 Colombians???? Me too. Then there would be less hot Colombian women coming to Chicago, overstaying their visa, (very few go home) and then trying to use every sexual tool they have to con me into marrying them for papers. You think I am exagerating? You crazy gringos.....I don't quite know what fasinates you so much about our people. In the last three weeks alone, I have had 7 (SEVEN) Colombinas trying to get me to marry them. I told them, you told need me, there are enough gringos out there that are dieing to marry you thinking that you will be the women of their dreams.

And you guys wonder why it is so difficult to get a visa from the embassy in Bogota'. It's because you guys on this site are clueless as to the amount of fraud my people comitt here. It's a good thing I don't work at the embassy, I would be issuing even less visas than they do now.

If I marry a PR, I can be %100 CERTAIN as to one thing...and that is that she is NOT marrying me for papers.

Visas There must be far less people wanting to go to the US, when I renewed my visa three or four years ago people were waiting almost a year just for the appointment. My girlfriend renewed hers last week, called for the appointment, got it for the next morning, went there usual long lines, but after 2 hours was out. Passport back via post in three days.

Gomezman5 says on Mar 14, 2005, 07:04:

Kernow Juanalejo It goes like this. My messages tend to time out. So,I type faster then I normally would...If there are typos...who cares? Most people type worse than I do. At least my ideas are coherent and logical, even if you disagree with me. Although, I don't think you really disagree, I think you just pretend you do---just like you did above.

Marrying for $$? You can say that about all women, if you want. Marrying for papers is just that...don't try to do one of your distortortion tricks. My Colombian women are pros at doing this stuff. Just check out the web sites. And come to Chicago where a huge community of Colombian women try to do so every day.

And Juanalejo....you are not correct about Colombians looking for less visas. The difference in the wait time for an appointment, has to do with two factors. One there is more personnel proccessing these matters. And two they developed an expedited system for proccessing visa requests. FYI, the wait time did not go down gradually, it dropped about a year and a few months almost overnight. That is proof positive that it was it was the embassy's new procedures that account for the difference. If you don't believe me, I can give you the name of a person a Startours, one of Cali's largest travel agencies and she can confirm what I am saying.....

By the way Kernow If it makes you feel good to pick on my typos....you and only you have my permission to do so!!

Also, as to Grupo Niche....I still say they are living off their past glory....which ended a long time ago. The only people that think Niche are a bunch of great salseros are Colombians. You will not hear the PR's say that. And when you think Salsa, for the most part, Salsa IS PR. The best of the best Salseros have been, and continue to be from PR. Colombian for years have tried to bring forth other salseros that they want to claim are great ones, like Guyacan, but they never quite make it very big

I do not disagree with you assesment of Grupo Niche. Neither do I disagree about salsa, because truth be told I don't care for it that much. I do prefer the sound of Colombian salsa to that of Puerto Rican salsa, just my opinion though.

Gomez I will tell you how much I love Colombians. Tonight I was out shopping for a few presents for my mother with my beautiful Colombian wife. Afterwards we stopped at a restaurant, a typical homecooked American style eatery.

Whilst waiting to be seated the manager who is from Colombia recognized my wife & I, he used to be the manager where my wife works. He seated us and later came back and sat down at our table and chatted with us. Our waitress Diana is from Bogotá, we enjoyed remembering the little things that one often takes for granted. She actually cried when she talked about her family in Bogotá, all her family returned to Bogotá except her. She told us of her plans to return home to Bogotá to live.

My wife and I are very light eaters by American standards so we asked to take our leftovers with us, the waitress threw in loads of extras, then the manager asked if we had paid yet. We hadn't, so he gave us 50% off the bill and gave us 4 assorted muffins and some cheesecake. My wife then tipped the waitress more than the actual meal cost us! When I asked her afterwards why, she said because she is Colombian and we must look out for each other, and God will reward those who give.

That is just one of the reasons why I love Colombians.

They are generous to a fault, even when they have very little for themselves.

There are amny things I don't like about Colombia, but the people are not one of those things. Even you. :-)

BTW, doesn't your Colombian wife ever post on PBH? Even she might not agree with you sometimes. It might even get personal....worse yet, she might "cut you off." Naa...that's an American/British thing.

Speaking of British, the world "whilst"????? Definitely not American!! It is NEVER used here. But if you want to use your British "Middle english"...That's ok. Funny thing though. At first I thought you were starting to demonstrate how proficient a typist that you are....as proficient as someone else you know.
