Gropin' Tales...

You know, I am so glad to hear Colombia is finally moving into the 21st century.

I am glad that crazy groper got some time in jail. Okay, maybe the sucker is out of luck with a 4 year sentence, but it will definitely set a good example. However, there is another little group of forgotten perverts to deal with: The flashers.

Colombia has its fair share of these specimens.

My first encounter with one of these pervs was at the tender age of 4. I was riding my tricycle in front of my house and I was flashed by a neighbor 3 houses down. He put on a nightgown and when I rode by his house for the 10th time, he opened the gown and freaked the hell out of my poor toddler eyes. I was terrified. My mom an my aunts spoke to the owner of the house (he was renting the ground floor flat) and he was evicted. That poor corroncho was terrified when he saw my aunts and my mother charging toward his house. I still don't understand why nobody called the police.

I remember back in my catholic school in Colombia, We had this special spot for our little gang in the basketball court, I always sat there with my friends at recess time. The court was right on top of a hill, and right at the foot of the hill there was a deserted dirt road. There was this man who walked by everyday carrying a shovel and a pail, when he saw us, he would put down the pail and the shovel and pull his pants down and grope himself. We used to think it was gross, but we also had a good laugh while we pointed and screamed. We told the principal (a very stern old nun) and she forbid all the girls in the school from sitting on that side of the basketball court. I think she probably reserved that spot for herself ... he he he. Just kidding.

Gropers are even worse because they are hands on. It is very frustrating getting off the transmilenio, feeling a quick slap on the bum, and when you turn around the crowd has dispersed and you don't know if it was the old guy or the young punk. You feel so helpless because there is nobody to slap.

My mother tells me when she was young, the gamines would lift up a girls' skirt and run away.

There are also construction workers. The don't flash, they don't touch, but they are so vulgar. They make these nasty comments and when you call them "imbecil" they laugh. They think it is hilarious that they made you that angry and uncomfortable.

I think any girl enjoys attention, you know a look, a door being held for her accompanied by a smile. I don't think anybody enjoys getting groped, especially when they have no obvious culprit to open hand slap and embarrass publicly.

I encountered 3 flasher with my best friend. is horrible when you are a teenager, That is why I stopped using tight clothes and mini skirt, after all of that I started using baggy trousers and bigger clothes. and I had seen so many girls being subjected to this kind of behaviour. I am glad that something is being done about this perverts.

kat... worse part is, in Colombia, you can't even tell the cop because the look on their teenage face is just as lascivous.

There used to be this guy that walked by my house sometimes with his private parts hanging out of his shorts. He would stop you and ask for directions.

One day he did that to one of my aunts, and she just looked at him and said "What.. you think you are going to scare me with that thing.... ha, I've seen bigger and better, tuck it back in".

Things are improving, Last year the police instituted a sound level restriction in Bogota for those annoying car stereos. I feel like such a loser because I've never been groped or molested. Even at the Catholic school I went to, I found out years later that many of my classmates had been molested by the Christian Brothers who taught there. None of them had even made a pass at me! I did have a cashier wink at me once but I think it was because my pants zipper was open.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

I remember back in the early 90s, here in New York, there was a big black guy that used to masturbate on the subway when it was crowded with people. I thought it was some kind of urban myth until one day a big black guy sat accross from me. He pulled out his wood and started stroking it. A couple of ladies noticed too and we ran to the next subway car.

When I was around 13 years old, I was walking late at night and a bunch of drunk 18 year old girls surrounded me. They grabbed my ass and said they wanted to "F" me. I was a little intimidated but I liked it.

When I was in elementry school, all my friends used to run up behind girls and give them a hump while they were skipping rope or playing. I wanted to do it too but I was too shy. None of the girls would complain and teachers never noticed. It was weird. One kid used to do it all the time. He usually averaged about 4 or 5 girls a day in the school yard.

I grabbed a few asses later in life. Usually in college bars while drunk. It was fun grabbing a girl's ass and making her think it was someone else. One time I grabbed one girl's ass and she thought it was my friend. She punched him in the stomach...lol.

nevertheless, I understand the feelings ... it is humiliating. I see no solution, putting one guy in jail will change nothing. The feminist movement in the USA and Europe changed a lot, but also much other stuff to the negative.

Sorry Ladies... No way in hell a guy deserves 4 years house arrest for slapping a girl on the butt. It may be f'ing RUDE and and the guy deserved to have been knocked right off his bicycle, or otherwise bitch-slapped, but that was not a serious offense.

In the spirit of "equality", women should expect jail time if they slap a guy.

I was sooo annoyed, but what could I do ? She had a wild look in her eyes and I was totally helpless. I kept thinking "what is WRONG with this pervert, does she like men or something ?!". Eventually, she drug me back to her apartment...

Afterwards I felt angry and somewhat violated.

Yes, in this past week alone, I have had my you-know-what grabbed by a trans-sexual in the street, and then last night in Pereira at the new discoteca (La Calentera or something like that) which is taking a lot of market share away from Mango Biche. I am not sure if she was a pre-pago, or just really drunk, but the looks of those around us was interesting, to say the least.

I have to disagree here I don't think it will help much. I have rather liberal views and I doubt that you'll see a big change in the behaviour of the guys around here.

In my opinion punishment never helped much. You have to raise people properly that they will respect women not punish them after they disrespected them this way.

I'm sure there are no similar punishments for such a sexual harassment in Germany and it still does not pose a problem there.

On the other hand, does capital punishment in the U.S. do a lot about the murder rate? Nope, in fact the rate is much higher in the US than in Europe where there is no death penalty at all.

Very good and valid point. I'm in total agreement. However... how do you explain the fact that many Colombian men who respect their mothers and put them on a pedestal and are very protective of their sisters and daughters have no qualms about groping a woman they don't know?

It has been said in many self defence courses that the best way a woman can avoid being raped by a stranger in a dubious situation is by establishing eye contact with him and speaking directly to him.... acknowledging his existence so he no longer sneaks up on her. Why is this? Is it harder to attack somebody who suddenly becomes a person?

Ideally, parents should be raising law abiding children. We know that isn't always the case, hence the reason we have punishment and deterrents. Ideally, women shoudn't be afraid when walking the streets alone, but the world is an ugly place.

Even in Japan, one of the most homogenous, conformist and law-abiding? societies on earth, nearly two-thirds of the women report being groped on the trains. Maybe they need a stun gun that only affects the nether regions, putting it out of commission for a few days!

tobntno says on Feb 28, 2006, 13:59:

Japan is an good example when it comes to general crime: nice people and a low crime rate but when it comes to women rights it's still in the dark ages.

Teenage prostituion is way more common there than in other places of the world, sexual offenses are considered almost "normal" there. I remember seeing a documentary on Japanese CEOs doing business with american companies - these guys actually had to take behaviour classes on what not to do with the female american employees: groping butts and breasts was on top of their list...

Besides, society-wise we can't compare North- and Southamerica and Europe with Asia, things are way more different there.

This is not just about the parents raising but about the schools and society in general - I'm sure the kids don't learn to behave this way at home.

This situation you describe is not analagous. What you describe is a sexual situation in a pretty typically sexual environment, a bar, and though I know you're trying to be joking, it's clear that such a situation would have been welcomed and consensual by you. Unless a woman could actually have dragged you back to her apartment against her will.

Most of the groping and harassment experienced by women is not about sex, but about power. Like rape. It's about asserting one's belief that women's bodies are something one is entitled to, as something he has the right to possess, treating a woman as an object and not as a human being with equal dignity. Groping and similar sexual harassment is degrading because it is non-consensual. It's about domination, intimidation, and posession.
