gringos, tenga cuidado!

Guys,

We have to be careful about what and how we write on this forum, or else we will drive alway some of these smart Colombian women that add so much to this site - Colombiche, Adminn, Desi, Paisa29, WorldCitizen, Lucia Rojas, and others.

I'm talking about some of the cruder messages that might be considered degrading to Colombianas. If you would not want to read a message about your sister or your gringa friends, don't post it. If you must write about it, save it for the private messages. Adminn and WorldCitizen have already threatened to boycott this site. I don't know about you guys but I hate stag parties.

I hope they stick around We need balance on this site. Esp. because some of our posters get on these "All Colombian women this...all Colombian that.." crap, which in real life is never true. But as they say, one bad apple....

Fucked-up experience. I just returned from Lima Peru this morning. We're in line in the Lima airport, waiting to clear immigration to come home. There's a grumpy older American in the line next to me who's apparently married a Peruvian lady. He's bitching because they won't let her accompany him all the way to the gate (yeah, I know)and translate for him. As if, they're supposed to. She's staying a bit longer in Peru. Then, he's like, "wait until "they" come to Florida with no English. I'll be handing out tickets to all of them, for anything I can think of." As if all Latinos deserve this treatment.

This is the mentality of some of my countrymen. Marry a foreign woman. Go to her country and never bother to try to learn the language. Even worse, want rules to be bent for them. Complete disrespect. I'll never understand it. And this dude works in Florida law enforcement.

I share that experience to say, there's an idiot in every bunch. Here on PBH, there are a few. Sometimes I'm one of them. LOL!!! Don't let them chase you away. There is much insight into Colombia to be learned from you ladies. I hope you continue to engage in respectful debates. When they turn ugly, get the moderators on the threads to stay on course on close it down.

I'm not big on restrictions, whether they are imposed by moderators or group pressure. I am not Colombian nor am I a woman. But I love them both. The Colombians and women that I know can stand up for themselves. They don't have to whine about "bad" things being said. They can explain why they think that someone is out-of-bounds.

I don't expect any epiphanies from my time on this site. However, comments that can be shown wrong can also be instructive.

it's not just courtesy to women... it's courtesy to each other, period. life is like the good ship lollipop and we're all on board together. the very least we can do is be nice to one another. we don't have to agree...in fact we rarely do. that's what makes it nice, cause we're all different. but we don't need to attack and belittle each other to share our opinions, what ever they are.

personally, i don't give a rat's behind what any of you or anyone believes, feels, wants, doesn't want, etc. i do care how you express those issues. like the poster above noted, act like you're talking to your mom, your dad, your sister, or the bosses' bosses' daughter. put simply, just show a measure of class and be nice to each other. i've found over my way-too-many years that it works every time. trust me, i, too, have been a klutz far too many times in my life, and it should go with out saying, that i really regret those failures of mine. being nice don't cost a thing...being rude, insulting, nasty, hateful, etc, does. it costs a lot, and we pay those dues throughout our lives. personally, now, i'd rather not pay the price.

all the best,

dw

Everybody thinks the world revolves around them. The only non-Spanish musicians my wife had ever heard of were the Beatles. Up until she moved here she lived in her own little Colombian world. I have to explain what things like WW1 and WW2 were about.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

Each time I hear UTC make that comment about his wife I simply cannot believe she and my wife lived in the same country. There are very few British or American groups she hadn't listened to in Colombia, she knows far more about American screen idols than I do and she sure as hell learned about the World Wars, although I did have to tell her that it was the Americans (specifically John Wayne) and not the Allies who actually won the war. She had only seen the Hollywood version. She thought the war started after Pearl Harbor not many years earlier.

She also thought the world revolved around the US, not Colombia.

2) How do we know if they are Colombian ?
3) Who cares if they are women or not. (This isn't a dating site)
4) Why SHOULD we act like we're talking to our mom or sister... we're NOT.
5) Anyone dumb enough to automatically believe or be "offended" by generalizations on a message board should go back to their TV.

P.S. Crazy Eagle, there are few posters on PBH who hurl personal insults as frequently as Colombiche... so what the hell are you talking about ?

Crazy Eagle, thanks for the kind words. I found that whole "speaking sweepings" thing very amusing. Funny things can happen when one translates literally.

If anyone here doesn't believe I'm Colombian or a woman, ask webmanco, he lives in Bogota, arranges the meetups (many of you have met him as well) and we happen to know each other personally.

OH! Colombianox can confirm too and Rubiazo might just have a clue ha ha ha.

In any event Albatross, people here know I am not the type to insult. I even waved a white flag at you on the thread about Colombia's educational system but of course, you never responded to that, you'd rather just keep trying to get people here to think badly of me. I don't even know what I ever did to you.

It's getting boring, just put a lid on it.

Clarification Actually, I agree that having alternate viewpoints here would be a good thing. I've been under the assumption that there were already a number of women posting, but other than Desi and one other, I don't always know who here is a woman. (or who is Black, Colombian, American ect.)

But I don't think that anyone should be coddled or that we should "watch what we say" as if we were in church or around children or something. I suppose we are all guests of Peter, but I don't think he meant PBH to be some sort of politically correct, opinion-free, "good ship lollipop".

Why did the thread about the good Colombian girls get locked? It veered off to a whole discussion about why Latinos in the US do not want to assimilate but I thought the whole thing was nonsense. The VAST majority of Latinos are Mexican and the vast majority of those live in California and Texas. Even Rocinante admitted that his remarks did not apply to Mexicans in those states but then every one went on talking about Latinos when they actually meant non-Mexican Latinos. For the millionth time, Mexican-Americans DO assimilate. I can't tell you how many Latinos here cannot speak Spanish. Hell, I have to help them with their Spanish. We eat the same Tex-Mex food and we all go to the same quinceneras and weddings and parties. I feel sorry for the rest of you in Miami or NYC or wherever the hell you live where different groups don't mix. We mix down here, we're all screwing each other and getting married and divorced and having kids who are a little bit of everything. We're just all gonna end up Texican. It's the future. In fact I read an article yesterday that said some people in Vermont wanted to secede from the US because they were afraid of what was happening down here with the Latinization of the southwest. Hell, screw 'em - thanks to Vince we're Number 1. Go Longhorns.

Tex-Mex UC - not to hijack but.... A good deal of Mexicans have been living on this side of the US border before the border was there. Once a family exists in a "different" country for a certain amount of time (more than one or two generations) they become more like the country than their country of origin. I think the Mex mindset and overal attitude towards their bordering country, the US, is un-comparable to the South Americans. Although they will both eat ChimiChangas and celebrate cinco de Mayo....

If I hear another Longhorns comment I'm going to scream. Vince's knee was down in the 2nd quarter. No review. In the second to last drive of the game there was a catch and fumble, SC recovered. The officials f*cked up the review, even though everyone could clearly see the replay. SC was robbed scandalously. Texas' championship should be marred with an asterisk. They were given 13 points that they never should have had. Texas was solidly beaten, but got help, which makes the championship suspect, gay, and lame.

I did a little more digging and... I did a little more digging and as near as I can tell, the writer of the article was taking the law and the amendment out of context for the sake of sensationalism, or so it would seem. The law, Title 47 of the United States Code, Part 1, Sec 223 entitled: "Obscene or harassing telephone calls in the District of Columbia or in interstate or foreign communications" (in effect since Jan 2002, by the way), states, in paragraph (a) (paraphrased)

Whoever...by means of a telecommunications device knowingly makes, creates, or solicits, and initiates the transmission of, any comment, request, suggestion, proposal, image, or other communication which is obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, or indecent, with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass another person...shall be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.

So "annoy" is on the books, but it's been that way for the past four years. The author of the article might have thought to mention that.
