American
About 3,000 North Americans arrived in Barranquilla during the late 19th century. By 1958, American immigrants comprised 10% of all immigrants living in Colombia. There are now between 30,000-40,000 United States citizens living in Colombia.]The barrio el prado, Paraiso and some others were created by Americans, also schools and universities were built by American architects such as the Universidad del Norte, the American School and many more.

huskie says on Feb 28, 2008, 05:48: It all started when Aviation started in Colombia, Barranquilla was called the "Colombia's Golden Door" and not just US american's migrated, tons of Europeans after WW2 . It is a city born however of the cultural encounter from towns thanks to its development like fluvial port during century XIX. From the last decades of that century, the main migratory groups that have entered the country, did it having as destiny the city or like passage port towards the rear area. Syrolebanese, Italian, Spanish, American, Asian Germans, (Chinese in its majority) and many other foreigners arrived at the city for diverse reasons. The name of Gold Door of Colombia, more than a romantic reference, has a literal meaning: Until the development of aviation in Colombia, Barranquilla since the end of century XIX and half-full of century XX was the literal door of the country, by where they entered and they left the travellers, the merchandise and everything what concerned Colombia with the rest of the world. The construction of great airports in the main cities of the country did not diminish the importance of a city that grows facing one of the seas of more important commercial interchange of the world: the Caribbean Sea. The cause that is not a city of colonial origin, causes that their architecture is preferably republican and for that reason owns one of the republican samples greater of the country.
