Gringoinbogotá ATTENTION PETER

Hey Peter, this guy is doing more damage than any possible good. Can you do anything about stopping his hate program about Colombia, and Colombians. As you may remember, my partner and I moved to Bogotá in March of last year, and have since purchased a house in Candelaria, and I can attest for a fact that nearly everything he warns against is not actually happening on the scale he indicates. He´s a bad actor, who ought to go home to Bushland and tell his horror stories to other hate mongers....At the least, some moderator should be given permission to delete his rants whenever they appear. Best,LoloG

I agree, one of the reason I'll be moving to Colombia is to get away from rednecks like that, and it's disappointing to know that people like that are living in my beloved Colombia, oh well, at least over there he's the minority.

Differences of opinion Gringo in Bogota often has a more, ahem, dramatic perception of things in Colombia than most of us (including us non-tourists) but I'm going to stick up for his right to participate. Personally, I think a long vacation away from the stresses of Bogota would do him some good. At least he's honest that these are his opinions and perceptions, unlike those who paint fantasy as fact.

Gringoinbogota, I don't always agree with everything you say. Hell, maybe 50% of the time I disagree but I think you bring a needed perspective when there are so many people who post in the opposite direction. Keep on trucking, dude!

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

Yes and no Yeah, I think GiB's a wanker, too, but I don't think he should be banned. Think of him as balance to ColombianoX, and find the truth somewhere in the middle. Neither one is here to troll the board and stir up trouble, they're just real people with real opinions, like everyone else. We may not agree with them, but I think their perspectives are useful to have around.

I agree with the Bushland comment, but as far as him causing damage, I dunno. People can hear similar sentiments from other gringos here in Bogota... better they read this stuff on this board, where it can be balanced with other commentary, than hear it for the first time down here from some guy in a bar.

Just my twenty pesos. Unless someone's only posting here to really try to cause trouble, I say let 'em rant. There may be a higher ratio of noise around here lately, but at least it's a vibrant community. It'll evolve.

Re. Rednecks ColombianoX, mi amigo, you're gonna be really disappointed to move from the states to Colombia to get away from rednecks only to find out the country is crawling with them. What do you think the AUC are if not the reddest of rednecks? And there's plenty more besides them.

Wake the F*** up!! There is a forty year insurgency going on in Colombia, Remember? It is the kidnapping capital of the world, Remember? I live in the safest city in Colombia and I am careful. There are barrios in Cartagena that I will not go near, true in any big city in the world. Just like living in Miami, you wouldn’t go into Liberty City at night, unless you had a death wish. GIB provides a valuable service to this board, so stop the childish BS, people don’t get banned from this forum for expressing their opinion and that’s my opinion, if you don’t like it, TS.

Don't blame me I voted for Ron Paul!

goosekirk says on Jan 9, 2005, 12:29:

Good points Yeah, I'll go along with that - in general, better to be over-warned and figure it out for yourself, than be under-warned and figure it out for yourself. Although, there's no reason why every tourist needs to follow US military force protection guidelines. I remember when I first came here, I was urgently warned by people like GiB not to ride any bus, ever. Sheesh. Still, I think everyone needs to realize that not everything GiB writes is totally inaccurate.

Although watch those generalizations, man. I gave up the best apartment in town, sold my furniture, my truck, quit my job and changed careers to move and live here in Bogota, too... and when I see someone like you in a bar, I go the other way! I'm not isolated from the population at all, and I still don't agree with a lot of what you write. It's just a difference in outlook and attitude and life experiences.

ARMacleod says on Jan 9, 2005, 12:47:

Gringoinbogota Soon I will be a neighbour of yours, but that is another story.

Like salespersons, I think those advertising Colombia will ignore or pretend, that the things that can tarnish their personal view, of whatever it is that they are trying to sell, that it is a small inconvenience, perhaps a minor teething problem.

On the other hand. Personnel who are trying to convince themselves that everything is nothing but rosy, will magnify the existing agreeable things to the extent that they will see nothing wrong at all.

The third group will have some kind of grudge, real or imagined as a result of a bad experience and will do everything possible to denigrate the thing that has given them the reason.

You on the other hand (something similar to myself I might say) will look at the thing from every possible angle, will analyse it to the enth degree and take the action that you think is correct for you.

Where I have to disagree is, I will keep my feelings to myself unless goaded into other action or if I can see in my heart of hearts that if I keep quiet it will cause someone incredible grief.

I hate to say this, and I mean it. You should be very careful about tendering unwarranted, unwanted, unconstructive, inappropriate, information to people that you do not really know. In a site like this one, you will reach many ears, some will appreciate your intent but. Others will not.

There are extremes of all kinds on the site and in every walk of life. It would be great if we could just mingle with like kinds, but as you know, life is not like that, it would be ghastly if it were.

Try to target the individuals rather than the masses. Have a word with Don negro. He knows the extreme of everything.

I enjoy your postings. I will shut up on the subject now.

Being of unsound mind and dubious disposition, I cannot be held legally liable for any indiscretions. ¡El diablo me hizo lo hago! But don't worry, be happy.

The brain is like a parachute, it only functions correctly when it is open. Pax vobiscum.

no banning just for having diff POV... If that was ever the case, most of us probably would have to be banned. LOL. GIB is just retelling HIS specific exp or exp of his friends, there's really nothing he's saying that could NEVER happen to a person. Sure lots of warning he writes about are EXACTLY that WARNING, you can choose to disregard it, listen to it, or read between the lines. It's the audience choice. I agreee that it's better to be overwarned then underwarned. Beside what do we care if his warning scared off a few newbies looking to go for the first time?

GIB isn't the most diplotmatic poster here and has a pretty quick fuse, but he's not a "troll", just someone who speaks his mind. When he post something i think is petty i just ignore it instead of getting into silly, petty arugements w/ him.

Lionheart says on Jan 9, 2005, 14:42:

rather GiB than pink sunglasses or grave diggers I said this in some other thread where people were jumping on GiB, so this is a mere repeat for me.

Since I belong to a larger group of people here in PBH who intend to move to Colombia, not just visit, we are interested in reading about bot sides of the cookie. We are not interested in sunshine comments - nothing will happen - or grave digger comments - you will be kidnapped and die. We are interested in comments and reports from the middle, from people living in Colombia who can share their experiences. Not all have same experiences, some are bad, some are good. This mix allows us others to make our own opinion.

I enjoy comments with sarcasm, black humor, and a rough edge ... it makes reading easier, especially when the topic is about the negative sides. I clearly understand the message, it seems that many reply to these posts out of instinct, and not with thinking first.

Ok ... many comments and threads here would find themselves in the weird and wacky section of other sites ... but they add to the color of this site.

fill, I agree, LaloG should also post experiences, not just attack GiB, and this wasn't the first time. I know LaloG lives in a sense of security in Bogota, lucky for him. But does he really disregard all cautions, or what are the basic behaviors that make him feel secure. We could learn from that much more than from attacks on other PBH members.

haha hey Hollywood I think he was calling YOU guys pussies. I am also rough and tough and have a pistol (albeit watergun). Anyway that is neither here nor there, as I have made many a man cry under most severe tongue lashings (verbal, not physical.. i put that in for you, bastard Utopia).

I am not a pussy. ok yes, well, maybe I am. No I'm not, I am just indecisive, I think.
