Great news for foriegners who want to Marry a Colombian

I recently went to the DAS office in Bogota and had a little chat with the ladies up stair about marrying a Colombian and staying in Colombia for an extended period of time.

IT SEEMS THE LAWS ARE CHANGING!!

As of March a foriegner will no longer need to apply for a "Spouse Visa" from outside Colombia! You will be able to enter Colombia on a "Visitors or Tourist Visa" and Marry your Colombian in Colombia with No problems. You will then be granted a two year Spouse visa, re-newable from inside Colombia also....That means no more trips in and out in and out of Colombia!

Great News!!!

about time! But what about if someone is already married to a Colombian? Can he go to Colombia as a tourist, stay 6 months then get a 2 year visa in Colombia without having to leave the country? I've been married to a Colombian for 10 years.

Sounds good to me, too But even if they do permit you apply in Colombia and to be "previously married", as I am as well, you know that some key piece of paper (apostillado, of course)will be missing and it's a long way back to the US to get it.

It's never easy.

I Think this Change... can be done through the Ministry of External Relations(MRE) but I can't swear to this, nor have I heard of the change in the law allowing marriage without a visa inside of Colombia BUT it might well be true. MRE has a web sire, www.minrelext.gov.co, all in Spanish. Even I got totally confused. I THINK what has changed is that if you have certain visa already and came into the country with that you do NOT need the special "marriage" visa. A tourust visa or entry as a toursi with you passport is not sufficiant to get married. Of course, if a person legally entitled to marry you does so you are, as we say in the South, "By God married." If you can convert this set of circumstances to a temporary visa for residence due to the marriage can best be answered by eithr DAS or MRE. For those not familiar with Colombian buracracy it often rivals that of 18th century Czarist Russia so if you visit five different locations and get five different answers.

What $175.00? The Colombian marriage visa is free to US citizens.

I pointed that out to Senor in the Houston Consulate and even had a printed copy of the requirements from the Consulate website. The people at the Houston consulate were the rudest Colombians I have met to date....to quote the Chinese laundry lady...no tickee, no washee...paid the $175.00 and moved on. Gotta know when to hold em...when to walk away...I took the visa and ran!!!

Are you serious? I went to the very same consulate and had a lovely chat with the consul himself while he messed with my passport. No charge. They must just charge anyone who is not from Texas. That's ok, they charge the Oklahomans $200 and the Arkansans $250.

Be thankful you're not dealing with the consulate in Chicago.... I'm in the process of gathering docs for a Non-governmental organization (NGO) visa. Every time I've called the Chicago consulate, I've spoken to the same guy (when I can actually get a human, that is) who tells me that I need to call back between 2-4pm Central time. What the heck is that?

So, I've given up on them and now call the consulate in Houston every time I have a question. I always talk to the same lady, who's very helpful. Now, when I call I just say, "I'm the one who keeps calling about the NGO visa..." and she knows right away who I am. Craziness!
