Great Desserts other than Crepes & Waffles

My boyfriend and I have been in Colombia since Nov. 20th. We're headed back to Bogotá on 1/4 where we'll stay until our flight out on 1/14. We'll probably be in La Calendaria (this time not Platypus) and we want some kick butt desserts. We want to try and avoid what is obviously the Colombian yuppie place to grab some ice cream, Crepes & Waffles. Have you found a place? What did you like?

There's a great french bakery in La Candelaria. I think it's on La Decima.

It's probably full of yuppies and reasonably well-to-do grandparents, but I think the bakery at the front of Castellana 104 (Avenida 19 and 104) is good. They make chocolates, candies, pastries, cakes, pies, regular bread and rolls, specialty breads and so on. It's a pretty popular joint and right across the street is a Davivienda, so if you need some cash, their machines allow you to take out $500,000 COP at a time.

I've never had salpicon in a formal establishment - maybe it's different - but I've picked it up from the sidewalk vendors during Ciclovias a number of times.

I love the home-made helado de coco that they sell on the streets, also helado de salpicon, guanaban a and tuttifrutti, all home made with fresh fruit and sold from small stands and icecream carts on the street. (Do they sell home-made ice-cream (paletas) on the streetcorners on Bogotá?)

If you have time to give a quick description of salpicon it would be appreciated. We've been eyeing it on menus but haven't tried it yet.

Salpicon is a sort of fruit salad, made of fresh fruit, juicy and very refreshing. Another option is the absolutely fabulous caleño treat, el champús, it's not for washing your hair but it's a sort of fruit salad too, with plenty of lulo and piña, white corn and sugar cane molasses....a little of acid orange to cut the flavor.

the salpicones i have had are like a cross between a fruit cup and ice cream. sometimes they put one of those spiral cookies in it for looks.

kinda like a colombian version of a sundae, but better in my opinion.

French pastry shop on Calle 9 just above Carrera 2. As far as I'm concerned it's the only good "pastry" in La Candelaria. Tarts, chocolate croissant, cookies, all that kind of buttery stuff.

I really like the French place, Bagatelle. I usually went for coffee and/or dessert but they have good lunches too. The ambiance is quaint. There are a few locations in Bogota but I don't know of any in La Candelaria. There's one on Calle 95 and another on Calle 70. Trying to remember which it was that I visited often... maybe Calle 70. I remember it wasn't far from a big outdoor Juan Valdez and the British embassy.

Batatelle is totally different from the Pasteleria Frances in Candelaria. Both are fine choices.
