Okay folks I'm getting tired of reading about all of the negative things about Colombia. I'm tired of reading about the crime, pollution, babies being kidnapped and killed, FARC, para's, etc. etc. etc.
Let's try a new approach for a few days, weeks or months and see if we can change from all the recent negative posting to some more positive ones. Tell us about your last great experience in Colombia, whether it be something simple like you had a good conversation with a total stranger or you found a new restaurant or anything that may have added a positive contribution to your living or visiting Colombia.

Gringo Spy says on Oct 1, 2008, 09:50: I have so many great stories to tell. My first one is when I first visited Colombia, Medellin to be specific, I met so many nice people. All Colombianos either living or themselves visiting Medellin. Everyone was very helpful and seemed to tolerate my limited gringo Spanish. I was surprised to find the quality of the grocery stores and malls on par or better to those I frequent in the US. I felt out of place a bit due to my style of clothes compared to the style most men wear in Colombia but since I had no other options, other than to purchase an entirely new wardrobe, so I dealt with it. My trip visit to Colombia three weeks later I was a little better dressed but still kept my distinctive gringo look.

adrienne79 says on Oct 1, 2008, 10:59: We had been renting by owner an apartment since January on a year contract. We were having some problems with the landlord/neighbor who was always playing loud music. She actually let us out of our lease without any kind of penelty. We now live in a new place that is 10 times better and we didn´t lose anything to the previous Colombian landlord. Also, the final walkthough was a breeze and we don´t have to pay anything extra or unexpected. I have read many horror stories about renting in Colombia but this ended up turning out great for us.

I see the big church in Buenos Aires and the cloud collared mountains behind. It's a good feeling knowing that a flight of stairs and out the door is contained a wealth of treasure that not many can understand. This is where I am rich. Gringo Spy says on Oct 1, 2008, 12:28: Okay let's get back on track with the spirit of the OP... I almost forgot about a wonderful experience during my first visit to Medellin. Romy, thanks for reminding me with your great comments. It was June of 2007 around Fathers Day and it was when the local football team, National, won the championship match. I couldn't believe what I was experiencing. There was so much enthusiasm and passion for the local team it was like I was in the middle of the field as they won the final match. The entire city erupted with cheers and screams of joy everywhere. People were partying in the streets ALL night long. They were honking their horns all night. Fireworks exploding all over the city. It was an incredible feeling to be in the middle of so much enthusiasm and excitement for the winning team. I will never forget the people hanging out of their cars with the green and white flag of their local team honking their horns to the beat of Na tion al Na tion al. Beep beep beep! Beep beep beep!

Bill Turley (Trustee board) (☼Travelguide writer) says on Oct 1, 2008, 13:22: For me to report a single good thing that has happened to me in Colombia would be almost impossible. Just today for example as I went for my normal short walk with my little fury friend I looked at a small tree that is very wide. Maybe a meter tall and 2 meters wide. There were about 6 hummingbirds darting around the new flowers. Or the sun as it broke over the top of the Emerald mountain casting prisms of light from our fountain, or the neighbor girl (Srta Somondoco) offering us some fresh corn they were picking today. Or the bright yellow flash of a bird that calls my name every morning, or the delicate tiny flower that shows it's face between the blades of grass. To limit my comments to one thing is thusly impossibe as this wonderful country blesses me every day in numberous ways. Mr. Bill Somondoco 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Mononoke28 says on Oct 2, 2008, 12:00: One of the best things that happened to me in Colombia when I was there in 2006 was when we went to my cousin's finca in Santuario. He has a very humble but very nice place there and his neighbor who lives way across the hill has a granadilla field. We walked over there and the guy gave us a couple of granadillas to eat while we talked with him. I told him how much I love them and that his were wonderful and before we left his house, he had a big bag of freshly cut granadillas as a gift to us. I was floored. Diana 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Gringo Spy says on Oct 2, 2008, 18:43: On my second visit to Medellin in July/August of 2007 I spent another three weeks exploring, meeting new people, searching for property and enjoying La Feria de las Flores. I met a few locals who kind of adopted me for my entire three week stay. They took me up to Santa Elena (Where they make the beautiful silletas) for the big party during La Feria de las Flores and what a weekend we had. We rented a room in a finca and used it as our base and from there we went to friends houses for "happy hour". There again I met some of the nicest people. That was the last weekend of the fiesta and when the entire town of Medellin (it felt like all of Medellin was there) came up to Santa Elena to party all night. They closed the roads to private vehicles so if you wanted to get around you either walked or took one of the many chivas. What a blast! The Colombians sure now how to enjoy life. Being so conditioned to work, work, work as so many of us are in the US I can only hope I will learn to enjoy life they way they do.
