Good bye Bill Gates

NOW the Richest Man in the World is LATIN.

I just returned from abroad and learned that Carlos Slim moved from #3 to #1 with his winning bid on the widening of the Panama Canal and Telecommunication Companies . It was new to me and many others I spoke with...maybe you too? This is the most recent article I could find...apparently it has been a long time coming

http://money.cnn.com/2007/08/03/news/international/carlosslim.fortune/...

Anyone have any input on this?

It also appears Slim is more humble and good natured. I like that in a man ;)

Slim is of Lebanese decent..
Scotty I wonder if he has given to charities like Bill Gates did...
If Bill Gates wouldn't have donated so much of his money, he still would be the richest man.
I feel he is still the world richest man because he actually helped charities...

No matter what one thinks of Gates' business practices while building Microsoft, ya gotta admire hell out of his philanthropy now. Not only has he committed most of his personal wealth to the Gates Foundation, he got Warren Buffett to do the same (donating to the Gates Foundation), with HIS personal wealth.

Amazing story, really.

Mafe - You are correct about his decent -his grandfather ..( I have learned that there is a very large Lebanese population in Mexico City). But Mexico does take "credit" for him ;)

Right, slguy.
You should talk to the people of the veredas around El Penol (Medellin) about his unplanned visit up there last year.
Amazing... indeed amazing.

Ok.
He visited El Penol, and was indeed involved in philanthropy projects.
Some people I know met him and was given money to fix their poor houses in the veredas around there.
He got there unannounced and with no bodyguards. The boss of the police station at El Penol almost flicked out when they called him to advice.

No proof, nor that I looked for or interested in it. I just reported what some people from there told me.

Now, I did see Mr. Gates in St. Martin, going around with a Colombian girl from a brothel, but that's another incredible story that you would enjoy to hear Morphus one day.... :)

By the way, weren't you going with Elmo & co. to Barranquilla for Carnival this year?

Is this suppossed to be a source of pride to Latins? I would say NO WAY! He's just one more manipulating entepreneur who's made his many billions exploiting workers across Latin America. And he's cheap to boot: drives himself in a nondescript car, eats iut of a brown paper bag, and is NOT known for any charitable donations or activities. In that respect, Bill Gates and his wife, who have donated millions of dollars to many health initiatives around the world is a real hero.

Carlos is feeling the pressure to start being the bigger man, now that he has ammassed his fortune. Like Carnegie, the more ruthless in business, the more internal pressues cry out for redistribution of wealth that will make people remeber his name.

Mr. Hollywood says on Feb 8, 2008, 11:54:

Gates was a penny pincher for most of his career, too. The Gates foundation was only started in 2000 or 2001, I believe. And If I remember correctly, it took some goading from Ted Turner and other high-rollers to get Gates on board with giving away large chunks of his wealth.

Since then, though, he's really done some fantastic things. And I admire the practical nature of the kind of projects the Gates foundation seems to support -- ending malaria and polio, etc.

In regards to the following comment in the article

“You don’t need to teach a man how to fish, as the Chinese used to say. Instead of giving him the fish, instead of teaching him how to fish, you have to teach him how to sell the fish so that he eats something else besides a fish.?

OK - This man almost sounds like he has ideas of Grandeur. Why does this statement sound like it defys the laws of physics .... or gravity??? Am I reading this wrong?
