Going to Colombia at 17...

My neice is 17 (Although she doesnt look it at all, according to the bouncers in our town haha) and she wants her parents to give her permission to see a friend in Colombia. Is this mother effin safe? The airport says if she has a copy of her birth certificate and written permission from her guardians she can travel.. is this right? what do you guys think about this. I like the way you guys state your opinions here, so hit me with it.

The friend Regardless of the picture what's the relationship of the friend in CO? Can this person be trusted to protect your neice? Or is this some friend met recently? I'd say the answer to your question has to do with the friend being visited not what your neice looks like. Good job, though Mac Gringo getting us a little cleavage. No wonder the bounces let her in.

While I wouldn't suggest solo independent travel in Colombia ( being entirely on one's own) for most at 17, I have to say that I did meet an intrepid 17 yo traveller during my stay at the hostel last year.

Pretty interesting kid, he had travelled overland (and sea) from Boston for 2 mos. He was a pretty street saavvy kid, looked comfortable and confident in his surroundings - AND looked about 14. Looking 14 worked becuase no one would suspect he was a foreigner until he opened his mouth, just another scrawny carefree kid bumming around. Even then his spanish was pretty dammned good.
